Cops Confiscate Cameras at Ohio Congressmanís Town Hall (Chabot)
Fox News ^ | 8/24/2011 | Kurt Nimmo

Posted on 08/24/2011 6:43:47 PM PDT by GreaterSwiss

A congressman from Ohio had cops grab the cameras of constituents during a town hall meeting. Steve Chabot, a Republican, had cell phones and cameras confiscated in order to “prevent an embarrassing Youtube video from making the rounds,” according to Carlos Miller, who runs a blog documenting efforts by the state to stifle the First Amendment rights of photographers. Police said the cameras were taken “to protect the constituents.” A local television station, however, was allowed to videotape the meeting and the brazen move by Chabot and the cops.

Can someone from the teaparty primary Chabot? He's a lifer who voted for the debt deal. Yes he votes conservative but he's been in office too long and it shows.

There is NO REASON to be afraid of saying anything on the record.

What, are they concerned about carpel tunnel?

Disgusting thing for any politician to try to do; no matter what the party.
I watched the video; the person gave up the camera way too easily.

Well then, he had better get out in front of the story! If he’s behind it, he’s a disgrace and should have a primary challenge.

If Chabot's people paid to rent the hall he can exercise controls like that.

Your demand for something different would entail a violation of his 4th amendment rights.

Yes and you couple that with the fact that the State is increasing IT'S use of surveillance cameras everywhere.

Chabot was NOT BEING SETUP. Chabot asked the police to do this and stood by as it was being done! He GOT CAUGHT!

featuring U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, video cameras owned by two Democratic activists were seized by a Cincinnati police officer at the direction of Chabot’s staff.

A Chabot spokesman said the had the cameras seized “to protect the privacy of constituents” at the event, although there were at least two media outlets at the North Avondale Recreation Center filming the meeting.

Tim Burke, the chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, has written a letter to Cincinnati City Solicitor John Curp asking for an explanation of “the legal basis for the seizure and the enforcement by Cincinnati police of rules created by the Congressman.”

From my link above:

“David Little, a Cincinnati Democrat working with ProgressOhio, a liberal organization, and Liz Ping, a Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for the Ohio House last year, were taking video at the event. Little was using an iPhone video camera while Ping, who was taping the meeting for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, was using a flip video camera mounted on a stand. About 100 persons were present – most of whom were clearly not supporters of the 1st District Republican congressman.”

Sounds like a setup to me.
Still it ‘comes with the job’...

Chabot was congressman 1994 to 2008 when he was defeated by democrat Steve Driehaus. He won again in 2010. Chabot has been a member of the Republican Study Committee, and voting against rail projects and other liberal bills. he will not have or need a tea party challenge because he is a reliable conservative.

He’s their congressman. It’s a public event. I see no problem with them videotaping him.

Would you be ok with a Republican videotaping a democrat or a person videotaping the police or is that a setup too?

Fire all the PIGS who grabbed cameras.

Fire them? How has that worked out with the thug cops attacking camera users seen here almost weekly> Any of them even get a stern rebuke that anyone has heard of?

Didn't think so. This seems to be the new modus operandi when a cop sees a camera aimed at him.

I think I know what this is about. I mentioned this situation before.

Democrats and liberal independents been showing up at these meetings chanting “Raise taxes on the rich to create jobs” and recording them and putting them on youtube. Republican News Channel (FNC) is not reporting it, but Democrat News Channel (MSNBC) has been showing them daily with glee. That is why many here dont even know about it.

What concerns me is that there are no contrary videos showing Democrats being yelled at over taxes, certainly none on FNC. Like we lost the activism juice when Republicans took the House.

Who cares if it was some setup. Everything would of been caught on camera. If the situation was reversed you would be pissed off.

Why are you in favor of losing rights like being able to videotape public events?

I have been illegally threatened by a police officer for asking his name when getting a seat belt ticket (when I had it on). If I had a camera on me, I would of been protected.

If you are going to judge a candidate's record of 16 years on one vote then you need to stay in your mommy's basement and don't come out till Christmas. If you don't know why he voted that way then you are just sucking snot and calling it ice cream.

RE :"It was a huge UNION GOON Set Up.

YES, It looks like a liberal coordinated effort to do this and then show them on MSNBC as organic, This is the first I have seen it mentioned here. They first started doing it over the Ryan plan. The author made it sound like it was to stop conservatives from protesting the Republican which is not what it was.

He set himself up. It’s incredibly stupid to do something like this. If he can’t answer questions without giving his opponents some sort of political bonanza, he should just resign.

I’ve been to several of Paul Ryan’s town hall meetings and there are plenty of political types taping the entire thing to find stuff to use in campaigns. It comes with the territory.

Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin is also tailed by Think Progress bloggers.
