Private planes, private no more

"Both general aviation and commercial aircraft use the public airspace and air traffic control facilities, and the public has a right to information about their activities." Oh, please. We all use public streets and sidewalks, which doesn't mean the police have a right to monitor our movements and let the world know where we go.

If you aren’t doing anything wrong you won’t mind being observed every second of the day. /sarc

Has Ray LaHoodlum ever used a public toilet? If so the public has a right to know the results of his last urinalysis, colonoscopy and whether he has any STD’s! After all those are public facilities. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind the loss of a little privacy for a little more safety.

Is not editing a article a comment in itself? Why edit the article at all. That’s no different than changing the headline to fit your point of view.

Did not know that - thanks for the info.

Do they have to check in with air traffic control when flying in certain flight paths and altitudes?

I’m leaving tonight with my family on a 200 nm cross country flight in our Cessna. No flight plan will be filed, nor will I have a need to communicate with ATC. Flight plans are obsolete and of limited value, especially when a SPOT cost $150...gas for a C-130 is more.

Be aware. The reason the government wants EVERYONE to file a flight plan is so they can TAX PRIVATE AIR TRAVEL BY THE MILE, as well as PRIVATE AUTO TRAVEL.

On the “we all use public streets” angle, there are already insurance companies who will give you a better rate if you let them install a tracker that looks at when / where / how you drive. How long until that becomes mandatory, and the Gov’t gets the data? Not very, if we continue down our current path, is my take.

See post #28 for the reason why they are doing this.

You nailed it. Can’t believe how many times I’ve seen that logic displayed here. It’s rather sad.

there is no legitimate reason at all for this information to be made public.

The reason is so the TAX MAN can have access to your MILES FLOWN. You don't think they are just planning to tax AUTOS by the mile, do you?

It’s not just the Big Brother problem. This effing idiot will let murderers, kidnappers and terrorists know just where their prey’s jet is at its most vulnerable points and when and where their prey will be accessing an airport.

IMO, it violates the equal protection clause of the 14th as well as the 4th.

There will be 500,000 members of AOPA fighting this...

You don’t need to be in contact with ATC unles you are in Class B or C airspace...which is at or above 18K (IIRC) feet (most piston single engine acft dont go there) or around major metro type airports. B requires clearance to enter, C requires 2-way communication.

All of the above is easily avoided.

I’ve flown from Oregon to Wisconsin 3 times without talking to ATC.

If you aren’t doing anything wrong you won’t mind being observed every second of the day.

Actually, they don't want to observe you every second of the day, nor do they care where you go.

They only care HOW MANY MILES the trip was.

BECAUSE... it is going to be TAXABLE.

Yes, sadly, you’re on to something with that comment.

All the more reason to make sure we put someone into office that will actually strike down all this crap starting day one.

Look at how many years we had the White House, the House, and the Senate, and how little we did with them.

If you had read the article, you would know it was not a "stupid" article. And a dam is a structure that holds back the water. Geeze, the poster did nothing wrong, he used a quote from the article as he was concerned about the copyright rules. What he did is perfectly acceptable here.
