BANGOR, Maine — A local woman saw a young couple opening water bottles and dumping out the contents in front of Shaw’s grocery store on Saturday and pulled out her iPhone and videoed the two brazenly committing the common food stamp scam.

She then went into the store at around 1:30 p.m. to report what she saw and police were called to investigate the fraud.

The Bangor couple, a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old female who turned 18 on Sunday, told the investigating officer that they had purchased two cases of water with funding provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program.

A contaminated well is hardly a strawman. About 5 years back everybody in Morgan County Indiana (Martinsville) found that due to contamination from an old dry cleaning plant the entire water course that supplied water through community wells to community water purification was CONTAMINATED with dangerous substances.

New wells would have to be drilled elsewhere and pipe laid to bring it into the main water supply systems throughout the county. That would take millions of dollars and 1 or 2 years for construction.

EVERYBODY, not just the poor, had to turn to bottled water to drink, and no gargeling in the shower anymore either!

So, let's say we've shut down all the wells, and there's no source of drinking water, but people with income can buy all the bottled water they want ~ but people on welfare will ~ what?

Tell me what the folks on food stamps would do for potable drinking water? Perhaps they should have moved to Indianapolis?

Why didn’t those water dumpers just sell the bottled water for 25 cents a bottle and have even more cash?

Because they're morons who can't think farther in the future than the tips of their noses? I saw someone one try to buy cat food with his SNAP card. The cashier said, "You can't buy that with the SNAP card." He said, "But, it food." She said, "But it's for a cat."

Hey, what right do you have to tell the people on food stamps whose choice is between contaminated wells or bottled water that they can't buy bottled water in Martinsville, Indiana just like people with more money?

The allocation of scarce water resources is an age old problem with human beings. It's generally considered bad form to deprive others of water to drink ~ Conservative ideology does not require that we murder people by withholding water. That's what LIBERALS DO ~ that's how they killed the Schiavo lady.

Well, Robroy just got banned yesterday for trying to argue a point with people who didn't want to discuss the point and only wanted to give in to their emotions on the issue.

He would still be here if he had backed away from such an argument.

I am backing away.

I gave up a little while ago.
The PIQ (poster in question) just couldn’t get off the emotional high horse and even understand what I was getting at (that people so poor probably wouldn’t even use the foodstamps for bottled water).

Of course, this is also one of those cases of accepting the false premise that if the government doesn’t do it, it won’t get done.

I would think that someone who feels so strongly about it would personally do something about it.

Food stamps, issued by the Dept. of Agriculture (not the welfare dept.) are a farm susbsidy.

For who, Mexican farmers? Chinese food processors? George Soros and Monsanto?

You forgot to read the post where someone noted their state gave water away free (through the food stamp program).

Think about it ~ a crate of water ~ 24 bottles. Those things are heavy. The ONLY people picking them up think they need it.

I could live without bottled water for the rest of my life. Excluding amoebas, there's nothing in water in a roadside ditch that's going to hurt me. A little chlorine can take care of most everything.

Are you kidding? Used water from a handpump many many times. That’s all that was in grandmother’s kitchen through most of my childhood (’50’s and ‘60’s). Nobody got sick.
And no,it wasn’t in a remote,rural area.

Wow. Wait till the Russian mob hears about that. It’s one of their areas — bulk shipping once recycled cans and bottles back into high redemption states.

Hmm ~ did you do the annual board of health check?

And were you a physician in the 50s and 60s and able to diagnose sickness in your family?

A warning from the state of Maine regarding ARSENIC IN WELL WATER ~ (dum dum dum dum dum dum tymppany drum beats louder and louder) ~ SEE: http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/eohp/documents/ASBROCH3.pdf

Not to needlessly scare you but my comment was about a CONTAMINATED WELL ~ not just hand pumps.

First, the people who pay for the food stamps program have every right to say what can and cannot be bought with them.

Second, the food stamps are supposed to be a supplement, not the entire amount spent on consumable items. If they want bottled water, they can pay for it out of their other taxpayer provided money.

Third, please cite with references any cases of people dying because they could not buy bottled water with welfare money.

Fourth, this is not at all like the Schiavo case.

The first comment of yours to which I responded:

“Running water from the tap? Hmm. Ever use a handpump on a well?”

Here’s your quote in which you change your tune in your response to me:

“Not to needlessly scare you but my comment was about a CONTAMINATED WELL ~ not just hand pumps.”

It’s obvious you have a liberal agenda, you are so adamant in defending this food stamp fraud.

Look, it's totally like the Schiavo case ~ the real issue is providing water. Everything else is secondary.

Now, about how the people who pay for food stamp programs can have their say ~ go bother their elected Representatives in Congress.

Did you realize we don't have a bit of evidence that the two idiots dumping water out of those bottles actually bought them with public funds?

They may have simply been acting like fools to stir up some old blue haired biddy and give her a reason for a last hissy fit.

There's a whole thread worth of material to respond to. I think you are leftwingtard disruptor cherry picking highlights.

BTW, the big problem for me in the whole story is the fact that Maine has a bottle return law ~

That's none of their business!

Get rid of the tax and we'll talk.

Regarding “purposes” we have two programs ~ one of them is called WIC and that’s a different purpose than the traditional program.

BTW, I responded to an inquiry that used the term "treated" ~ there was no need whatsoever to refer to "contaminated". It's a contextual matter ~ and next time when you see a RESPONSE to another post kick it up one more level to find that earlier post to see what the person was talking about.

My comments to you are nested within the context of that earliest series of posts in a different conversation.

I told you I can drink water out of a ditch ~ and if we can make sure there are no amoebas in there ~ I'll likely survive.

Can you?

Simple fix here: Bottled water no longer qualified to be purchased with for food stamps

Water from your tap is virtually free !!!

What? Free water from the tap?

I'm going to call Fairfax Water and tell them they've been cheating me.
