Much has been made of the Jimmy Carter-like malaise that Barack Obama has placed this country in. With good reason, comparisons are being made of the fact that they’re both weak and that neither demonstrates a working knowledge of the military or how foreign policy and energy solutions should be pursued. (Concerning the latter, Carter gave us Gasohol and Obama has given us the Chevy Volt.)
Thus, we’ve been inundated with comparisons to the 1980 presidential elections and predictions of how the right GOP candidate, say Gov. Palin or Gov. Perry, will ring up Obama in November 2012 the way Ronald Reagan rung up Carter some 31 years ago.
But when I recently visited with guest hosts Cameron Gray and John Popp on the NRA’s “Cam & Company,” and we discussed the mobs that betray a seething rage just below the surface in many parts of America, it dawned on me that the comparison to 1980 may not be apropos. Instead, what may be needed is to turn back the clock a bit further to when the counter-culture was in full swing and another Democrat who knew nothing about the presidency was making a fool of himself.
The year was 1968, and the president was Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ).

Yup, it was nixon v humphrey and nixon did not clean humphrey’s clock, the election was fairly close. Nixon cleaned McGovern’s clock in 72.

I’ve been saying this recently (but not online where I could prove it).
I see the Euro riots and domestic flash mobs as the kind of intolerable disorder that leads the silent majority of independents to support law and order, and putting grownups back in charge.
It could be 1968 all over again.
I just hope we nominate someone more conservative than Nixon.
LBJ was so bad he he didn’t seek his Party’s nomination and his VP Hubert H. Humphrey ran in his place (read = Hitlery). A Democratic Gov. George Wallace ran as a 3rd Party and Nixon held on as Humphrey surged to bring it within 1%. 4 years later I was working for McGovern against Nixon and Wallace was running again, till they pumped 5 bullets into him. They could have called that election right there and then. Palin/Rubio will march across this country in ‘12 like a hot knife through warm butter.
I remember like it was yesterday:
“I will not seek, nor will I accept, the nomination of my party”
We can only dream. Hillary would probably run in his place.
LBJ had Vietnam and had lost confidence of the independents that we should continue with the war.
BHO’s “Vietnam” is jobs and the lack of them. And he also has lost confidence of the independents.
So maybe the comparison works on this level. But Nixon was a Rino. Price controls? Come on!
Afterwards McGovern had the rules changed so that the party bosses had less control over the process in 1972 and afterwards.
Just think about it folks: Obama has spent us into oblivion (he added more money to the national debt in his first 19 months “than all presidents from Washington to Reagan combined”). He has not only watched the mobs break loose in certain cities, but has instigated them via his ongoing habit of pitting one group or class of people against another. And while our soldiers are being shot and killed overseas, Obama is angling for a way to pass a second stimulus bill and to raise more taxes in his ongoing bid to "spread the wealth around."
The Democrats hated Nixon long before his landslide win in 1972...going back to his days as Congressman when he took Whittaker Chambers' side in the Alger Hiss case. He was just as bad as Senator Joseph McCarthy in their eyes. Then there was the 1950 Senate race against the "Pink Lady."
He means the transition from one President to another and one period to another -- Carter / Reagan compared to LBJ / Nixon. I disagree with his assertion. Obama is nothing like LBJ who had balls and took leaks on teh front lawn while being interviewed. Obama is much more like Carter
LBJ quit rather than run again and gave us Nixon. Nixon was really running against LBG and it didn’t really matter at all who the nominal Democrat candidate was. He was just a stand-in for LBJ.

George Wallace ran as a 3rd party and won 5 Southern states’ electoral votes, which would have gone to Nixon. There was no way the Deep South would have voted for Humphrey. That was the reason for the closeness of the election of 1968.
