Anti-baby boom: Why U.S. birth rate keeps falling
CNN ^ | August 16, 2011 | Jessica Dickler

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Right before the recession hit, the U.S. was undergoing a mini baby boom. Now, birth rates are declining fast.

The number of children born in the U.S. peaked with a record 4.3 million births in 2007, but has since fallen, dropping to 4 million births last year, according to estimates by the National Center for Health Statistics. The birth rate -- a measure of births per 1,000 people -- has dropped 10%.

Historically, declines in birth rates have gone hand in hand with economic downturns. During the financial slumps of the early 1990's and 1970's, the birth rates fell 15% and 18%, respectively. In the midst of the Great Depression, the birth rate was down by 17%.

Meanwhile, the cost of raising a child has risen steadily since the U.S. Department of Agriculture began tracking the data in 1960. From buying car seats and strollers to paying for childcare and schooling, a middle-income family could spend an average of $226,920 to raise a child born in 2010 to age 18 (and that doesn't include overwhelming cost of college), according to the USDA.

The escalating cost, coupled with the most recent economic downturn, has caused many women to postpone or even forgo their plans to have children, said Steven Martin, a senior research associate for the Institute of Human Development and Social Change at New York University. "Certainly economic calamity does cause a significant decline in fertility," he said.

In fact, nearly half, or 43%, of women said they would wait to start or expand their family until they felt financially stable, according to a recent survey by BabyCenter.com, an online parenting resource.

That makes such a huge difference to those exploited children I am sure.

When I corrected your misleading-to-the-point-of-incorrect statement about Japanese law, I wasn't under the impression that abused children would care either way. So it appears my work is done here.

Medical cost and the cost of having babies and raising kids are through the roof...for everyone except illegal aliens.

Correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it, blacks, latins, arabs, asians, and immigrants born elsewhere are having lots and lots of kids in America. The birth rate among those groups is so high that the populations of those groups are increasing substantially. These groups will soon be the new voting majority.

So why don’t you inform all of us what the true demographic situation is here in the US

Sure, let's do that. In 2008, 75% of births were to women in the age group of 20-34, making it highly unlikely that "single moms still in high school" are one of only two groups significantly giving birth, as FlingWingFlyer claimed, Wouldn't you agree? Even women 34+ accounted for 14% of births, while women under 20 accounted for only 10%.

As for the "illegal aliens" claim as the only other significantly birthing group, in 2008 53% of births were to whites. Do you think it's likely that, say, 90% of those births were to illegal white immigrants? Because that's what you have to believe to believe FlingWingFlyer: That the United States is absolutely overwhelmed with white illegal immigrants flooding our cities with babies. Say, from Poland? The Czech Republic? Is this the untold illegal immigration story?

It took me less than five minutes to find this info from Pew. Link : http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1586/changing-demographic-characteristics-american-mothers

Further, compare that to the demographic situation in both Europe, China, and Russia. Please use Europe as a cultural example of where America may be headed based upon demographic changes.

Sorry, not interested. I'm occasionally motivated to debunk one absurd and unsourced claim of fact, but I'm not gung-ho to research and write a book here.

You see a subway, I see a coyote. Since I do not trust the state run “media” and their government statistics, I have to believe what I observe happening around me. Sorry I upset you.

Ha ha! Yes, there's definitely a conspiracy at work here, just as there is in any situation where the evidence demonstrates that you're wrong. Bless you for being brave enough to persist in your beliefs despite all evidence pointing to the contrary.

The stats don’t agree with you, unfortunately. Black people have a higher rather than a lower abortion rate. The reverse is true for hispanic folks.

I think our increasingly socialist society has something to do with it. The producers can’t afford to have kids.

That has to be a factor.

Earnings that would go to caring and supporting your own children are confiscated by the government and redirected to the care and support of the children of non-producers.

People should stop aborting their babies. It’s a curse. What happens when woman abort their babies? They turn into men and the men turn into wimps. Just not the way God planned it, he said to go forth and multiply. When you go against what God says, there are consequences. Look around and see how many woman don’t look like woman. It’s because of abortion. The consequences of abortion are endless, woman who act and seem like men are just the beginning.

And that is exactly why the elite oppose getting tough on illegal immigration.

Sounds like my wife's family. She is the 12th of 15. In her family, when you graduated from St. Vincent's (8th grade), you got to sit at the adult table.

I can fully understand people opting out of parenthood during this period of history. The federal government has become increasingly hostile toward traditional family, allowing forces into the culture that literally are ripping the fabric of our nation in two.

After having my son (32 years ago) and watching the culture at that time and seeing the inevitable decline into further debachary, (which has devolved into a nightmare) I made the very conscious decision not to have anymore. I always wanted a huge family (The Waltons is my favorite family TV show ever) but I could not bring myself to have more. My husband threw a fit but...he was a no-good and a lousy supporter.

These are only my reasons but I suspect, that there are many that are looking around and saying to themselves 'no' to large families for pragmatic reasons.

Face it, there is nothing good in this world to offer a human being. Public education is nothing more than indoctrination towards perversion. You have to continually sweat whether or not someone is going to molest your child, not to mention keeping a family in tact with all the temptations loosed in our fallen culture.

That’s OK, the government will just import more people from 3rd world countries to make up for it. if the italics don't work I apologize in advance. I think what you meant to say was they'll import more muslims to make up for it?

congratulations! I have three kids, you need a birthrate of 2.11 to sustain a culture, sounds like we’re doing our part!

you are indeed correct. Same situation in Canada, by the way, the average muslim birthrate is 11. That should scare all of us.

White America’s collapsing birth rate is changing the face of the country

“Over the past decade America’s population has grown by 9.7%, to 309m. Minorities accounted for 92% of that growth. The ranks of Hispanics swelled by 43%, to 51m. The Asian population grew at the same rate, to 15m. Blacks increased in number by 11%, to 38m. All minority groups put together jumped by 29%, to 112m. Minorities now form the majority in America’s two most-populous states, California and Texas, as well as in Hawaii, New Mexico and Washington, DC. They account for the majority of children in six more: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi and Nevada.”
