At a ceremony to honor the opening of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in our nation's capital Friday, the late civil rights leader's daughter Bernice made an historical error that would evoke tremendous ridicule and derision if she were a conservative.

BERNICE KING: "But as I close, I close with the recognition that daddy is standing, Lincoln is seated. Lincoln remembered for signing the Declaration of Independence. Daddy being remembered as standing up for truth and standing up for justice and standing up for righteousness and standing up for peace and standing up for freedom. Daddy is now standing on the National Mall in our nation’s capital."

Must we? Really?

It's obvious she meant the Emancipation Proclamation and just misspoke (unless I'm wrong and it was up on a teleprompter or something).

btw, is she the one who says that black need to be pro-life or was that MLK's niece?

Spain, as a peculiarly Spanish concern, lost interest in most of North America. They even settled any issues they had with Russia ~ and I think part of that was because NOBODY had come up with a major gold strike in about half a century (in North America).

British colonial standards were imposed with vigor from one end of their zone of control to the other and you found the British colonies coming up with the immediate predecessor to Manifest Destiny ~ they began claiming land from Sea to Sea!

The Buel family (which spelled its name a million ways), with roots in the earliest Spanish forays into the New World, actually "went over" to America, if not England ~ they could be depended on for the next century and a half to subvert lingering Spanish interests in what became the United States.

Any way to find out what her income is from whatever it is she does to get paid? using your fathers death to get rich
hardly seems very healing for “racial wounds.”

And people really forgot, is that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation only, in theory, freed slaves from the southern states that were in rebellion, it didn't address slaves held in the border states or slaves held in the north. The problem with that, was when he issued it, he had no authority over what those states did with their slaves at the time. It was only after the war, when they rejoined the union that the proclamation could even go into effect.

What it ultimately did do, was after the war was over, it led to the 13th amendment to the Constitution which freed slaves everywhere in the US.

Lincoln made a speech in Peoria, Illinois, on October 16, 1854, in which he said:
“I should not know what to do, as to the existing institution [of slavery]. My first impulse would be to free all the slaves, and send them to Liberia, to their own native land.” After acknowledging that this plan's “sudden execution is impossible,” he asked whether freed blacks should be made “politically and socially our equals?” “My own feelings will not admit of this,” he said, “and [even] if mine would, we well know that those of the great mass of white people will not ... We can not, then, make them equals.”

Perhaps his viewpoints would have changed had he not be assassinated, who knows, but up to that point, he wasn't freeing slaves, or helping to free slaves because he thought that they were equal to white individuals.

“An error of this magnitude by a public figure is almost unbelievable. The fact that it is not going to be reported, likewise.”

Can you imagine, the “sensitivity” the msm would have shown, had this been Sarah Palin, or a member of her family?

“It makes it easier to remain civil when you think about the very real possibility that this monument will suffer some type of Chinese drywall type malady.”
“”It was made in China, after all. And isn’t that a nice touch?””

Especially if new how terrible the Chinese were towards blacks in the 80’s and 90’s when AIDS was a big concern...

A sure clue that today’s people do not really know U.S. history. Their logic is lacking in knowledge.

I think her problem is that she doesn’t really know the Declaration of Independence. Years ago we all had to memorize that and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, plus the Preamble to the Constitution.

I actually think that her thinking process was something like this: The slaves were freed by Lincoln, thus he declared them to be free and independent, therefore Lincoln passed the Declaration of Independence! I am certain that the words Emancipation Proclamation are totally foreign to her.

>>>Exactly. I mean it’s a mistake anyone could make. After all, the Declaration was signed, what, 19 (?) years before the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, and quite conceivably, Lincoln could have been there if he didn’t have to ride in an open limousine on that fateful day in Dallas. Maybe Bernice had to, excuse me, fart (now illegal in Afghanistan) and couldn’t concentrate on the facts of history for a brief moment.<<<

Funny!

>>>>I remember that back before black people decided to change into a political party other folks were generally more polite about such lapses in speech or deficiencies in knowledge.<<<<

And generally people laughed them off. Must be getting old, since I remember the same thing.

And later, maybe a statue of MLK seated, watching television while the Apollo astronauts plant a flag on Mars. And John Kerry can dedicate a new memorial for all those who, like him, were serving in Cambodia Christmas 1968 when Nixon was President.
