Weprin Drops Out of Debate in N.Y. Special
Roll Call ^ | Aug. 29, 2011 | Joshua Miller

State Assemblyman David Weprin (D) dropped out of a scheduled debate with Republican Bob Turner on Monday, just over two weeks before a special election in New York’s 9th district that will send one of the men to Congress.

Weprin was tripped up in a recent interview with the New York Daily News editorial board when asked the size of the national debt. The Daily News reported that he had a “deer in the headlights look” and then said “[a]bout 4 trillion.” According to the most recent Department of Treasury statistics, the country’s total debt stands at about $14.7 trillion.

The Turner campaign framed Weprin’s decision to not participate in the debate as directly related to the Daily News interview.

3 to 1 Democratic advantage in this district. Polling indicates Weprin has about a 6 point lead.

This gaffe does not help him in this race to replace Anthony Weiner.

The Democrat Party does not discriminate against the ignorant. Examples in Congress abound.

The first New York politician who may find his election efforts imperiled by voting for same-sex "marriage" is a Democrat Assemblyman from New York City.

Assemblyman David Weprin is running to replace the disgraced Anthony Weiner in New York's 9th Congressional District, but Weprin's votes for gay "marriage" and other gay-friendly legislation is hurting him in his September 13th special election effort.

Asm. David Weprin (right) Marches in the Gay Pride Parade

According to City & State First Read:

"Weprin's vocal support for same-sex marriage is not the only problem he faces in a congressional district with a substantial Orthodox Jewish population. Anti-Weprin flyers circulating in Brooklyn also call out Weprin for voting in the Assembly to support the Dignity for All Students Act, an anti-bullying law that the flyer claims has led to the 'incorporation of books such as 'Heather Has Two Mommies' into the school curriculum.' The flyer, whose author is unknown, also hits Weprin for telling the Stonewall Democratic Club during his 2009 comptroller campaign that, 'Since I was elected to the City Council in 2001, I have been a co-sponsor of just about every bill of concern to the LGBT community.'"

It should be an easy race. Weprin is an orthodox Jew running for Congress in a district with a solid base in the Orthodox Jewish community, but the Jewish constituency is decidedly unhappy with Mr. Weprin over his support for the LGBT agenda.

Both Democrat and Republican insiders say that Weprin's support for gay "marriage" has given Weprin's Republican opponent, Bob Turner, a real chance to win the election.

Is Daily News the ones conducting the debate?

I can’t seem to figure out how he thinks his statements are plausible, not that they are anyways.

What is this man’s thought process?

Now if only the NY GOP would help him win.....

He's better off without them. Remember - Bloomburg, NY 23, Pataki, Lindsey, Javits, Rockefeller.......

The well known NYC councilman for the area ( who's an Orthodox Jew, and who's name I just forgot) MAY endorse the GOP candidate. It just might be enough..

OTOH, whoever wins is a one-win-wonder..because the CD disappears ..due to redistricting..

Turner win??? Will NEVER happen. Those Brooklyn, Forest Hills, and Kew Gardens Dems would vote Dem as they are being herded onto the trains.

It doesn't disappear. It moves down South, and turns red.

Either Welprin is confident of winning and doesn’t have anything to gain by participating in the debate, or else the race is close and he can’t risk any more gaffes.

NY-09 deserves better than Weiner and Welprin.

Weprin is an Orthodox Jew...

No Orthodox Jew I know of would be marching in that "gay pride" parade at all, let alone striking a pose for photographers with that transvestite wacko for all to see. You photo is worth a thousand words to point out what a jerk Weprin is.

Weprin spokeswoman Liz Kerr:

David's slip of the tongue [grossly understating the federal debt] is not going to harm Brooklyn and Queens working-class families and seniors like Bob Turner's plan to end Medicare and Social Security as we know it.

How many times have we heard this out of the simplistic minds of 'Rat politicians? Apparently there is such ignorance and such an entitlement mentality out there that this old bromide still attracts votes.

If Congress doesn't "end Medicare and Social Security AS WE KNOW IT" by raising the eligibility age or cutting benefits or both, Medicare and Social Security will just end on their own. The simple fact is that their deficits are unsustainable in the future with an ever-aging population, as relatively fewer workers pay into the systems to support relatively larger numbers of beneficiaries.

NY has one of the most incompetent state GOPs. Maybe they help the most by staying out of it?

Ed Koch stated last night that he believes Turner will win. You are painting with a very broad brush.
