Steve Forbes: I'm Leaning Toward Perry Endorsement

Forbes magazine editor Steve Forbes says he "very impressed" with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and is leaning toward endorsing him for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

"Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, is now the front-runner. He's had a good record even though liberals are now trying to trash it, along with perhaps some of his GOP opponents," Forbes, a two-time presidential candidate, tells Newsmax.

"He did some very good things in reforming their personal injury liability system, very very positive reforms. He encouraged energy production instead of states like California that discourage it, and refused to put in a state income tax. So in the great scheme of things that’s a pretty solid record to run on. So he is the front-runner."

Boy and how, the shrillness is fast approaching glass breaking level. What a spectacle.

Major issues Forbes has supported include free trade, health savings accounts, and allowing people to opt out 75% of Social Security payroll taxes into Personal Retirement Accounts (PRAs). He supports traditional Republican Party policies such as downsizing government agencies to balance the budget, tough crime laws and support for the death penalty, and school vouchers, opposition to gun control and most government regulation of the environment, as well as drug legalization and same-sex marriage.

In his 2000 campaign, Forbes professed his support for social conservatism along with his supply-side economics. Despite holding opposite positions in 1996, for the 2000 campaign, Forbes announced he was adamantly opposed to abortion and supported prayer in public schools. The previous year Forbes had issued a statement saying he would no longer donate money to Princeton University due to its hiring of philosopher Peter Singer, who views personhood as being limited to ‘sentient’ beings and therefore considers some disabled people and all infants to lack this status. Steve Forbes was one of the signers of the Statement of Principles of Project for the New American Century (PNAC) on June 3, 1997.

....On March 28, 2007, Forbes joined Rudolph Giuliani’s campaign for the 2008 presidential election, serving as a National Co-Chair and Senior Policy Advisor.[17] Later in the 2008 presidential campaign, Forbes served as John McCain’s Economic Adviser on Taxes, Energy and the Budget during McCain’s bid for the 2008 Presidential election.[18]

In December 2009, Forbes, in a nationwide mailer for the National Right To Work Committee, opposed union membership for police officers and firefighters, terming their representatives, “union czars,” and requested that mailer recipients contact their congressional representatives with regard to HR 413.[citation needed] In 2010 Forbes endorsed Peter Schiff.

On January 7, 2010 Forbes announced his endorsement of Dr. Rand Paul, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.[19]

On January 28, 2010 he formally endorsed Marco Rubio, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in the State of Florida.[20]

Forbes is an asset and his endorsement is big.

This puts a face on economic issues and a big rebuff to Romney.

Perry favors amnesty. Why are we backing him again?

Just found it out today. Is this guy actually Rico Suave, and not Rick Perry?

I don’t want another McCain this time. We’ve done that once. It was unpleasant.

Both Forbes and Perry are for open borders, amnesty, and cheap labor, so this isn’t a surprise.

Perry's is for open borders?

What does that mean to you?

Waving people into Texas and on to points north?

You're flat wrong!

Perry wants the border secured.

Perry in helicopter with Greta (TX-MX border is over 1250 miles)

2007: [excerpt] “If you show up illegally, without your card or you’re here as a criminal element, I’m for throwing the book at those folks, but the issue of people who want to legally, thoughtfully and appropriately come to America to work and help us build our economy — we should quickly come up with a program and an identification card to do that.” [end excerpt] Source

*********

"......When Obama continued to refuse even five minutes for the Governor, Perry took matters into this own hands and was standing on the tarmac at Austin’s airport when President Obama stepped off of Air Force One. Obama looked confused, Perry looked determined. Obama still ignored the pleas for help.

Perry again took matters into his own hands, and established an elite unit of Texas Rangers to bolster border security..." Source

********************

CW: We've been dealt a hand here in Texas (and if you've read my threads you know much of this) where we have a federal government that has not answered the call to protect the 1250 border miles Texas shares with Mexico. Gov. Perry does not believe a fence is the answer to illegals crossing the U.S.-Mexican border. He believes conservative ascendancy will. So we do the best with what we have ($100M/yr of our own state money put up to help secure an international border). We have a lot of crime to combat and pay for because of the illegal activity (drugs, human smuggling and trafficking) generated by an unsecured international border.

We can't refuse to educate or give health care, as everyone in every state is faced with the same situation, but since Perry is a border gov, he's held responsible for illegal aliens, where everyone vents their frustration about the problem using him as a whipping boy (and to make political points and take pot shots). Perry's asked for drones (went to Israel and asked how they protect Gaza Strip), has asked for 3000 people here on the TX border (crickets). Perry has set up an elite Texas Ranger unit to work on the border. Then we find out the Feds have been "running guns" across the border and we've had people killed because of that.

The Texas Dream Act was set up because we have a lot of kids here from the way the feds have allowed this to snowball. Students who have been in Texas for 3 years and graduated from a Texas high school get instate tuition (no benefits -- they pay their way) The entire Texas Senate voted for this in 2001. (The Texas Dream Act does NOT have all the hidden goodies the U.S. Congress "Dream Act" was trying to get into law.)

Perry has said: “If you show up illegally, without your card or you’re here as a criminal element, I’m for throwing the book at those folks, but the issue of people who want to legally, thoughtfully and appropriately come to America to work and help us build our economy — we should quickly come up with a program and an identification card to do that.”

The Texas legislature meets every 2 years for 140 days and the governor is allowed to call Special Sessions. He called a Special Session because he had put "sanctuary cities" on the agenda and the legislature dropped the ball -- but the Senate and then the House left again -- giving Gov. Perry nothing to sign (Texas legislators also have elections they'll be facing and no doubt didn't want a vote on this shadowing their re-election bids).

In this just ended session, after about 3 tries to slip it into a bill, a law that required people to show their birth certificate to get a drivers license got through [The amendment, added by Rep. Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, to the education funding bill legislators needed to balance the state budget had originally been included in Senate Bill 9, the so-called "sanctuary cities" bill that failed in the special session. It also had appeared in an omnibus homeland security bill by Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, that died in the regular session......By putting it into law the state potentially undermines an ongoing lawsuit that argues DPS doesn't have authority to check legal status.]. However, the ink on that law was barely dry before it was overturned by a judge – as usual.

In this last Texas Legislative session Gov. Perry signed the Texas Photo ID Voting Law -- it took 6 years to get it through -- Only 6 states have a PHOTO Voter ID requirement.

Texas has a long history with Mexico and being "Mexican" does not mean that you aren't an American, or a Texan. A lot of Texans have Mexican heritage or are married to someone who does. Perry doesn't lead with his chin. He's a thoughtful man.

Rick Perry is as ready to fix this as anyone and understands it probably better than anyone running -- or commenting anonymously on a chat site.

*******************

The 2001 TEXAS Dream Act was passed by 100% of the Texas Senate:

"It’s important to point out that there is a huge difference in the TEXAS Dream Act and the The Dream Act that was pushed in Congress and failed. The Dream Act in Congress was full of all kinds of goodies other than allowing children of illegals to receive in state tuition. The Texas Dream Act was focused only on that. I happen to agree with The Texas Dream Act, and so did everyone in the Senate in Texas. It passed with ZERO “no” votes. Add to that, it has been proven to be successful.

These are a few things you need to know about the [2001] Texas Dream Act. The child has to have lived in Texas the three years leading up to high school graduation. These students are given no special treatment in getting into Texas colleges and universities. They must get in on their own merit. They are paying the tuition (with or without financial aid). It’s estimated that these students make up about 1% of those entering college.

[snip]

Most of us agree that border control MUST be dealt with first. The problem with all other efforts on this issue in the past is that the borders were not sealed. If there is anyone who we can trust to do that it is Gov. Perry (if he decides to run for President). He knows what goes on down at the border. He has gone there many times. He knows what needs to be done. There is no doubt in my mind that if he were President, he would seal our borders. But Perry also understands Hispanic outreach." Source

Get your facts straight about Rick Perry.

The Palinstinians are worse than the left-wing media when it comes to making up crap, throwing it against the wall, and hoping it sticks.

They are on a full frontal press trying to destroy his record. They are pulling the same tricks the media used on Palin, that Palin failed to defend. Make up crap and attack.

Thank God Rick Perry entered this race when he did!!

The election is already won. Just like it was in ‘06-07 for zero, why no serious R was put to run.

And for those who haven’t come around to Perry: all the work the Tea Party did turning America back red congressionally is about to get the Executive red wave, particularly with the DC bureaucracy.

This is the last opportunity we’ll have to crush the commies and the blue areas they control, get behind it.

Gov. Rick Perry has thrown his hat into the ring as a presidential candidate. This move presents a unique opportunity for him to show political imagination and creative solutions on a national scale. As governor, he embraced and supported the Texas Dream Act, which is currently in force in our state. The Texas Dream Act permits qualified undocumented immigrants to pay low in-state tuition. In contrast to the proposed federal Dream Act, the state version does not provide a path to citizenship. It does, however, importantly protect these young people from being barred from a much needed education, so long as they have lived in our state for three years and have a high school diploma or GED degree. As Perry has stated accurately, “To punish these young Texans for their parents’ actions is not what America has always been about.”

We need legislation that represents a new, better future. We do not need legislation that sees the only solution as more stringent enforcement, without relief or discretion. To take such a path to addressing the problem of immigration lacks imagination because it fails to account for people who, if given a chance, would work and contribute (lawfully) to our economy and the nation’s future. Such a solution would be good not just for immigrants but for our whole society and economy.

http://www.chron.com/opinion/outlook/article/Perry-in-position-to-lead-on-immigration-policy-2150075.php

Houston Chronicle, August 31, 2011

Let me translate all that for you:

“Just the tip, just for a second, just to see how it feels.”

Texas DREAM Act? Really?

I’m surprised he didn’t pass TEXACARE, or some Romnoid equivalent.

Wall. It. Off.

It’s a border guys, not a velvet rope.

They aren’t going to vote for us people, they are going to vote for the idiots giving out the free tuition and the ten pound blocks of cheese - the bags of groceries.

Liberals are evil, but they at least adhere to their principles. We’re supposed to be principled, but we lack the courage to admit we harbor any. If any should stand between us and getting elected, we’ll just move them over until we get elected, and then we’ll PROMISE to put them back.

It’s how we got McCain.

Next, please.

Liberals aren’t evil. Its not like Obama got into office and set onto his master-plan to screw things up.

Liberals are misguided in their philosophy; as such its fundamentally wrong. That’s WHY things are screwed up.

The ‘Enlighted Liberal’ has historically been the first casualty of “reformation”. One needs to look no farther than Cambodia for evidence of that.

NEVER in the history of the world has the intellectual elite survived a political purging; they’re the first to be executed after succesful revolting by the ‘hoi polloi’

Quite frankly, it is my daily prayer that the American electorate is not so stupid to repeat its mistake of 2008. The United States (as a republic) CAN survive the chief usurper of the Oval Office, but what the United States of America can NOT survive: an electorate SO stupid to actually give a politician such as Obama - along with the baggage known and unknown - the reigns of government.
