Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

No more One World RINO candidates.

Perry has just proven himself to have the heart and soul of a RINO.

PS Individual Texans, doing what Texans have always done, made the “Texas Miracle”, not their governor or any other Texas bureaucrat.

Go back and think about what you just said and still see if you want an inpenatrable wall at the border...TSA at the airports, ship ports, bus and train stations....hey, if you’re a law abiding citizen what do you have to fear, right?

I guarantee you these Freepers that are against the fence/wall are all probably well off and have nannies, maids, cooks and gardeners that are from south of the border - like Perry does.

We well understand the nature of Texas geography, and we still think a fence should be considered.

Right again and a fence is only a first line of defense to be combined with real patrol and enforcement measures.

A fence makes sense -- from the Pacific to El Paso.

It doesn't make sense -- from El Paso to Brownsville.

The Rio Grande is the only water source for fifty miles thru much of that area. A fence that blocked cattle, livestock and irrigation pumps off from the river would make millions of acres worthless and impoverish thousands.

There are smarter, more effective ways to approach the problem. Let's try those, instead, rather than dogmatically repeat the mantra "Build a fence!"

"Create a barrier" to illegal aliens! How about that?

You couldn't travel the border between TX & Mexico, much less build a fence.

I agree that's true for much of the border. But that's not a problem because the fence does not have to be built right up on the border. Build it to take advantage of the terrain, even if it is often a distance from the border at places.

Check out my posts 87 asnd 99 on this thread — with links.

I did, and I am still not buying the reasoning for not building a fence.

From your post:

“There are places along the border that strategic fencing worked, particularly in the metropolitan areas,” Perry said. “The idea that we’re going to build a wall from El Paso to Brownsville doesn’t make sense ‘cause the fact of the matter is you know, number one, you’d never get it built, and it’d cost billions of dollars ... by the time you go from Tijuana to Brownsville.” Perry said that he does support putting “boots on the ground” and using “aviation assets” (i.e. aerial drones) to secure the border.

I see more excuse making here. He is saying building a fence from El Paso to Brownsville doesn't make sense because it would never get built and cost billions of dollars. It hasn't been built because there is no political will, and billions of dollars to secure the border with Mexico seems like a very solid national security investment to me.

I like Perry and of the candidates in the race, I think he is probably our best choice, but the good that is going to come out of this primary is that each of our folks gets fully vetted. As I said, most of the anti-Perry cut and paste jobs and rants about Gardasil are not persuasive, but we definitely need to change the status quo on the border and I think a fence is a darn good place to start. It certainly won't work in a vacuum, but it can be a piece of an overall national security border strategy.

Agree 100% with you. A fence is not a realistic, viable solution.

I agree with Perry, Americans need to stand together as a country and deport people who are not willing to make their legal commitment to America, speak our language and uphold our values of religious freedom, freedom of speech and civic responsibility.

No way.Giving the country away after all the blood spilled and the prevalence of separatism in politics is a suicide nation-killing delusional idea. If you want America fight for it like a real man.Otherwise we will deport you.

It's 1200 to 1500 miles long...and all kinds of terrain. Have you ever been to Big Bend? It would be a stupid waste of $$$...and wouldn't work!

Berlin's 110 mile wall worked. Israel's 500 mile wall works well. China's 31,000 mile Great Wall did it's job. Yeah, better to waste $$$ on welfare, health care, food, education, housing, garbage disposal, road traffic, pollution, courts, prisons, potable water, and jobs those lazy Americans don't want, huh.

I don't mind having a guest worker program for certain industries, but that doesn't mean bringing the whole family.

E.g., the "Bracero Program".

It worked...until LBJ pandered to the Cesar Chavez crowd.

What good does a fence do if nobody is there patrolling? We’ll wake up every morning to find holes in the fence, that end up costing taxpayers $20,000 sq/ft to fix.

A fence is an idiotic idea.

So for the sake of a few people who control some property on the Mexican side of the border, we continue to pay over a hundred billion annually to illegals and lose our national identity, just as the British are losing theirs? Sounds like a plan.

I bet you believe the official li(n)e that there are only 11 million illegals in the country and that a big chunk are going home because of the economy.

Agreed 1000%. A fence is an idiotic idea. It would cost a fortune and be in constant state of repairs. If there’s no boots enforcing and watching people break through the fence, it is useless.

Those touting a fence don’t know what the hell they are talking about.

Tunnels under walls or under fences?

Gaza has fences and tunnels to Egypt.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

That's the same logic I heard against drilling in ANWR in the 90s. "It'll be at least 10 years before oil starts to flow". Now 15 years later we're still having the same debate and conditions are worse.

Who cares how long it takes to build a wall. If while you're building it, you're ending free education, medical care, in state tuition, food stamps and all the rest for anyone not here legally, then self deportation will begin and we won't need any "massive roundups".

When the ship springs a leak you don't say, "it'll take too long to fix a hole out at sea.". You man the pumps and start emergency shoring until the ship is back on an even keel.

I don't know what Perry's record on illegals is, but he can't be worse than the current occupier of the White Hut.
