Perry tells NH no to border fence

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry says he opposes a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Speaking to hundreds of New Hampshire voters at a private reception Saturday afternoon, the Texas governor says a fence would be ineffective and take too long to build.

The comments, which produced one angry shout, expose a rift with some conservative voters over Perry's immigration record. Tea party activists in Texas have been particularly upset by his steady opposition to the fence. He also signed a law giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition for Texas universities.

Texas wil become a blue state? LOL!

And everyone’s a RINO except me.

Seriously, land mines and troops on the border (I like the sleeping dart hunting season comment)....

Cattle ranchers don’t have fences? Look ... grandmas who live alone down south have to have automatic weapons and security systems because the people are running over our border.

Once the run over it, they are criminals ... but many of them were already criminals in their own countries.

We were sold NAFTA because they said it would increase jobs and decrease illegal immigration.

Border patrols have found remnants in the desert that suggest some Al Qaeda/Muslim terrorists are crossing our southern border.

I’m tired of this. Let’s talk about this issue nationally! This thread is huge. The American people are begging for a legitimate answer.

Perry supports troops, technology, and monitoring as the solution to illegal immigration.

Yeah, that's why he cleared East Austin of all the illegals. Uh, huh, sent in the Texas Guard, had some drones spotting them, and monitoring what was going on in that neighborhood a mere 2000 feet from his office. Oh, sorry, nope, he has ignored what he can see out his window along with what's invading the rest of the state.

“There are places along the border that strategic fencing worked, particularly in the metropolitan areas,” Perry said.

There are long flat stretches of New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona in which a fence would indeed be a deterrent not incorporated by his statement.

As I said, QED and yes, I'd read it. And for you to suggest that I'm not aware of the variation of terrain across a continent is beyond condescending.

Look, I don’t even like Perry, but he’s right on this.

No, he's spinning and obfuscating.

The suggestion that we should fence the entire Texas/Mexico border is just absurd.

I never said that. My guess is between 60-70% of it would benefit. Worse, this use of "cost" as an excuse for not building a fence ignores that the bulk of it is in lawsuits Congress could preclude by statute. No, Perry is a dishonest spin artist here and I'm going to call him on it.

I oppose a fence too. Too expensive and will not work

Too expensive?

Lets see, we have probably 100,000 miles of freeway/highway sound walls all over the U.S,. some as high at 20 feet.

If walls don't work, why does Perry's compound, those in the White House, government installations, insiders and the well off, have tall walls surrounding their facilities?

How about...

Build the FENCE, and use troops, technology, and monitoring as the solution to illegal immigration?

How about...

Making life in America very uncomfortable and difficult for illegals? No welfare, food stamps, healthcare and, most importantly, no jobs.

A lot more effective than a billion dollar chain-link fence, don't you think?

I agree, they would climb over a fence or tunnel under it. Something else has to be done. Either land mines or some kind of a beam that would zap anything that crosses it. Boots on the ground, soldiers driving up and down a road with orders to shoot to kill. Someone even suggested alligators in the Rio Grande but a fence is too easy to get over.

The ones in Detroit are higher than that. Probably so nobody can get on a roof and shoot at cars.

I have no idea how many times you have said that. I’m not even talking about support here, I’m talking about specific citation of border security here.

I haven’t decided to support Perry yet, because I haven’t seen if he can debate with the others, and I haven’t seen if he is gaffe-prone or has some other major problem. And I’m just a person who would send a little money.

Palin could actually run for office — so why would she endorse ANYBODY until she is certain they will be around? It would be stupid for her to endorse Perry, then have him blow up at the debate. She’d have cut off her entry into the race, and backed a loser.

If she’s going to support a candidate, I expect she’ll wait, maybe until the end of september, maybe until october, and do so at the same time she announces that she isn’t running.

About the only way I could have seen her endorsing Perry earlier would be if she was absolutely certain he’d be a good candidate as well as a good conservative, AND he was having trouble getting traction and she thought it important to push him up the polls.

But clearly that’s not the case — at the moment, he doesn’t need any help. The help he will need will be to bring Palin supporters into his fold, and she’ll do that only if she’s sure she’s not running.

Texas will become a blue state as well eventually anyway. Nearly all the border counties are already voting democrat.

Just an historic note. When King Philippe II/III pushed the Treaty of London (1604) down everybody's throat Spanish agents had long been at work throughout North America setting "bench marks" in place for later surveys. They actually placed (or identified) bench marks in Virginia ~ so we know that Spain actually wanted the ability to find the true border with Virginia so that they could later build a large wall with a minefield ~ presumably to keep the Virginians out of New Spain.

There were other boundaries as well.

Ah so, the usual McCain, ‘doing the jobs Americans won’t do’ crap. I guarantee you if you offered cash for a days labor here in Michigan, you’d have no problem filling those jobs.

Michigan? Where the highest average temperature for Grand Rapids, MI during the entire year is 82°?

LOL!

Try picking crops in South Florida or the Califonia Central Valley in the heat of summer. The Michigan folks would first be whining about the heat and then dropping like flies.

Round up 500 Michan crop pickers and I will guarantee you one contract in South Florida and another one in the California Central Valley.
