When Rick Perry Praised HillaryCare (1993)
The Atlantic ^ | Conor Friedersdorf

Posted on 09/03/2011 4:15:57 PM PDT by Tempest

So what does a complete review of Perry's record reveal? As it turns out, he sent a letter during his tenure as Texas Agricultural Commissioner that praised Hillary Clinton's 1993 health care reform efforts. "I think your efforts in trying to reform the nation's health care system are most commendable," he wrote. "I would like to request that the task force give particular consideration to the needs of the nation's farmers... Rural populations have a high proportion of uninsured people, rising health care costs, and often experience lack of services." He concluded by noting, "your efforts are worthy, and I hope you will remember this constituency as the task force progresses. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance."

Dan Amira at New York magazine dismisses the story and mocks the Daily Caller for publishing it. "He didn't even say anything about the substance of Clinton's health-care reform plan," Amira writes, "just that it was 'commendable' to try to reform the system in some way, which is hardly controversial."

I disagree.

Clinton's efforts were widely criticized by Republicans at the time, and the substance of her reforms obviously constituted a substantial federal intervention into health care, the very thing Perry now claims is obviously unconstitutional and ruinous to liberty. (And yes, Clinton's plan did call for both an employer mandate to provide health care and an individual mandate to be covered.)

Sorry I read the letter as more than a few pleasantries...

There is no candidate including Obama with a more extensive record in this campaign than Perry. Nobody. He has to find a letter from 1993?

Believe me, this is nothing compared to what we're going to see about Palin if she happens to enter the race, especially if it looks as if she's winning. The liberals will use her past statements to make her look like Karl Marx in the eyes of conservatives who are suckers for that kind of thing.

What makes me crazy about you Perry anti-fanboys is you will not acknowledge the very real possibility that your favorite candidate would have acted in pretty much the same way.

Some of them are clearly desperate.

No source is too left wing for them to cite.

No allegation is too absurd for them to try to run with.

Sad to see any legitimate GOP candidate be treated this way by fellow conservatives. I can understand liberals doing it, but to see us try to eat our own with half-truths and innuendos is extremely disappointing.

Perhaps you can enlighten me. I am unaware of another Republican governor who endorsed pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for president.

And I am unaware if another candidate who supports instate tuition for ILLEGAL aliens.

And I am unaware of another candidate who wants to give citizenship to ILLEGAL aliens who, as Ricardo put it, "have served 'their' country".

And I am unaware of any other candidate who signed an EO that would cause families to tell the government that their 9-year-old daughter who is NOT sexually active doesn't want or need an unproven vaccination.

I am unaware of any other candidate who "would have acted in pretty much the same way". So who, other than Rick Perry has done any of these things?

I’ll no longer be a party to the destruction of the country under any party label.

Wildly off topic but Holy crap, Tigers went into the bottom of the 9th trailing by two and 2 run homer tied it followed by a walkoff home run.

What’s wrong with trailer parks? If your boy, Obama, wins again (that’s who you are helping BTW)...we’ll all be living in one (if we’re lucky).

I’ll bet his constituents were glad he was looking out for them. After all, that’s why they voted him into office.

This says a lot about Texans. Apparently they want a "nanny" looking out for them.

I wonder when Texas became the "Pansy - nanny state"?

You know, I am not a Perry hater, nor am I in a “Palin cultish haze”. I want to know about his past record—especially since he is marketing himself as a bonafide conservative. I don’t like the information in this article.

Oh, you were posting some rather snippy remarks on Palin threads. For a noob, you come off pretty rude, and I am wondering if you have some alternative agenda.

In April 1993 I knew HillaryCare for what it was.

Will you vote for me as President because I must be a lot smarter than Perry?

I’ll no longer be a party to the destruction of the country under any party label.

This country is under attack from the top. We are under attack by the elected leader of our country (however much he cheated to attain such position).

Yet you think that you do this country a favor by attacking those who would attack this enemy of our country?

I can understand a patriot wanting to see the best champion emerge...but I cannot imagine anyone trying to destroy those in competition for such championship.

This is not a sports championship...this is an existential battle for our country and, indeed, for Western civilization.

An attack on our own is a service on behalf of our enemy, Obama.

You may laugh at it but I’m sure not.

It appears Perry doesn’t know anything until he knows something. The rest of us all knew what Hillary was up to but Perry didn’t.

Sorry I read the letter as more than a few pleasantries....

That is your prerogative, but how do you reconcile it with the fact that Perry strongly opposed HillaryCare once the actual plan was revealed and he has consistently opposed government attempts to take over healthcare in the 18 years that have followed since he wrote the letter cited in this hit piece?
