Want career success? Dont cry at work
By Michelle Goodman -- ABC News 11:22 AM 09/02/2011
Thanks to Dick Cheneys new memoir, crying in the workplace is back in the news. In it, Cheney snidely describes former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as tearfully conceding hed been right about not needing to apologize for the now-infamous line in Bushs 2003 State of the Union about Iraqs alleged quest for uranium in Niger.
But you dont have to be a high-ranking official for on-the-job tears to tarnish your reputation. Among rank-and-filers, crying at work is often met with the same negative reaction.

"She came into my office. You know what she did? She started crying! Crying!"
"Oh, she did that with me too. I just told her, 'I don't know where you come from. Maybe that worked at your last job, but it won't work here. Get out of my office and don't come back until you can talk business without crying.'"
I have no idea who these two guys were, but I can tell you I learned something that day. Emotional responses may be unavoidable for some people. But engaging with them and treating such responses as somehow contributing to a discussion is a not necessary.
It doesn’t work in personal situations either. Whenever my wife really messes up, she tries to manipulate me with the tears. Sorry, doesn’t work any more.
I wonder if it is how people are raised? I was told by my Mother never to cry at work... it showed weakness. If you had to excuse yourself to the ladies room, then fine but don’t show that type of emotion. I think there are some jobs that shedding some tears may be more acceptable than others.. like if you are a nurse. But an executive? Never.
The only time a cried at work was during the time my grandmother was dying and I was burnt out. One day I went in and just couldn’t hold it together so I left early. Have I cried the whole way home? Yep. Asked for additional time at lunch to make up later because I was upset and needed to calm down? Yep. There was one point that work was so stressful, I left church and went home and cried, but NEVER in my office.
Now, in my olde age, I am stone cold about everything. It doesn't help, but it surely doesn't hurt.
I have dealt with people that cried because of reasonable issues such as grief, injury, etc... That is to be expected. The ones that I find intolerable are the ones playing the sympathy card just to scam the system.
Uh,oh, I thought the no crying rule only applied to baseball.
Looks like rule creep has moved it from the stadium to the office.
