On the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, many Americans are wondering whether the risk of a terrorist attack against America has been reduced. The picture is mixed. With the death of Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda is weaker. With revolutions in several Arab countries, frustrations with unpopular autocratic governments a recruiting theme for terrorist groups - have been mitigated. But one important contributing factor has not improved - widespread anger at America in the Muslim world. While views have improved in Indonesia, throughout the Middle East and South Asia, hostility toward the United States persists unabated.
This does not mean that most Muslims support terrorist attacks on America. On the contrary, overwhelming majorities reject terrorism, including the 9/11 attacks, as morally wrong. Al Qaeda is quite unpopular.
However, anger at America does contribute to an environment in which it is easier for anti-American terrorist groups to recruit jihadists, to generate funding and to generally operate with little government interference - witness how bin Laden operated in Pakistan and the widespread anger there when the Pakistani military failed to prevent the United States from taking him out.
Trying to understand Muslims feelings toward America has been the focus of a five-year study I recently completed that included conducting focus groups and surveys throughout the Muslim world. I sat for many hours trying to understand as Muslims explained to me why they are so mad at America.
Muslims do not like about how America treats them. But there is one thing that is the most fundamental: their perception that America seeks to undermine Islam

U still mad bro?
I had to.
Still mad? When were they NOT mad? I keep being told that they were mad and that’s why they were launching terror attacks. Someone draws a cartoon and they are mad. Some pastor burns a Koran and they behead UN aid workers. Some are still upset at the crusades, for goodness sake. They weren’t upset when Russia was in Afghanistan, but the USA being there has them ticked.
When are Muslims not mad?
So don’t underestimate the stealth jihad going on HERE. Because it is. Our own pols are helping them. dems and pubbies both.
I’m sure they were mad enough at Russia for its incursion into Afghanistan, but they would be making nice to NATO at the time, the only ones who could counterbalance Russia who was kicking their rears badly even though bogged down in the vastness of Afghanistan.
News flash for Steven:
In the wake of 9/11, thinking Americans searched for, and discovered, reasons why muslims WOULD attack us, not excuses why they wouldn’t.
Well ... it didn’t seem like anyone was plotting to launch terror attacks on Russia ... but I may be wrong.
Stories like this just make my blood boil.
I don’t doubt it. Either through spite or ignorance.
I hope the next president isn’t ignorant. I believe Bachmann is up to speed on what they are doing, as is Palin. Cain has a way to go yet. I like Cain but he’s got to understand what makes Islam tick at least as well as Cheney did before he would be effective at defending against it.
The most tactful way I can say it is....F U Muslims, I don’t give a left peanut what you think.
They knew bears were fiercer than eagles. If an Afghan Muslim had tried to knock down the Kremlin with a hijacked plane, every man in Russia would have been volunteering to kick ass in Afghanistan. America is more high minded, which in some contexts is a virtue, and in others foolishness.
Muslims have been mad at America since President Jefferson refused to pay tribute to the North African muslim pirates.
THE NATIONS HATE GOD There is a very simple explanation to this question. The nations hate God. Because they hate God, they also hate his word, the Bible, and his people, the Jews. After all, there is nothing quite so upsetting to the Postmodern ear, as to hear of a universal standard of truth or a "chosen people." But perhaps the real focus of this great and ancient hatred is Gods Messiah. The term "Messiah" is simply the Hebrew word for "Christ." This hatred comes out clearly as we read the rest of Psalm 2. It says: "The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One [Messiah]. Let us break their chains, they say, and throw off their fetters. The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them." (Ps. 2:2-3). The world wants nothing to do with the fetters of Israel, or of Gods word. Yes, the nations hate God, and they hate Israel. But primarily, they hate the Messiah. This is the problem with the restored Israel. It reminds godless nations that there is a God and that his prophetic word has come true. It reminds them that God has installed his Messiah on Zions holy hill (Ps. 2:.6). In this Psalm, God even calls him "my Son" (2:6). Israel reminds the sinful world of Gods rule, and of his laws. People today hate these ideas. Thus we see that anti-Semitism, at its heart, is anti-God, anti-Bible, and antichrist.
Oh goodness... immediately POST 9/11 squish Islam apologists were saying that we had to understand why they were angry and we should forgive them.
>When I think of Muslims, I think “terrorist”.<
Can’t trust any of them.
0bama did that, remember. 9/11 was our ‘fault.’
What you mean it IS a Christian vs Muslim thing. wow who woulda thought that after 1400 years of muslims killing everyone they could.
I’m talking about governmentally. Bush thought hard and went slowly to war. The media... well Russia would not have tolerated that even if it had been glasnost at the time which it wasn’t.
I was in Europe when we were facing all the crap from Libya. So Reagan bombed them. I suppose they are still mad about that, too. Is the Lockerbie bomber dead yet?
Scheiss unsinn is a german word that I can’t say here.
The modern secular land of Israel isn’t the concentrated chosen nation of the times of the Psalms — it embraces non-Jews without even asking them to accommodate to Jewish customs. But even the Jewish element in it, and its Zionist hope to one day be that biblical land again, is enough to raise Islamic ire. And there are theological disputes between Judeo-Christianity and Islam over the meaning of Israeli holy sites, which even alone would guarantee squabbles.
