Obama’s “Country Before Party” Nonsense
Commentary ^ | 09.05.2011 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 09/05/2011 5:58:09 PM PDT by Qbert

News reports suggest that on Thursday night, the president will tell Republicans in the House and Senate that they should put “country before party” and endorse his proposals for job creation. The “country before party” line has become Obama’s new theme in the wake of the debt crisis, and the passion with which he invokes it indicates it’s something he actually and truly believes in.

And it’s utter nonsense. Offensive nonsense too. Obama isn’t truly asking Republicans to put country before party. He is asking them to elevate the interests and ideas of the Democratic party higher than their own ideas, their sense of what is best for the nation, and their deeply held convictions about the moral hazard posed by a too-large government and a populace too reliant on it. They won’t do it, and they shouldn’t, and the next time liberals complain that conservatives unfairly impugn their patriotism, Obama’s effort to do just that with his loyal ideological opposition should be thrown in their face.

“...Anybody this naive is unfit to be a serious political commentator.”

He says that it’s all “utter nonsense” in the very next sentence.

The two-party system has become the core of our problem with a growing, evermore tyrannical and overbearing government.

The professional pols in both political parties think they have a God-given right to run the country. They bicker among themselves to be on top and get the majority of the spoils and loot. But when an outside force, such as the TEA party, surfaces as a threat to their power sharing arrangement they fight the intrusion with more vigor than they fight the opposition party.

Just look how the old time republicans have fought the TEA party or tried to preempt it.

They don't really want reform - they just want to win the majority again so they can get the lions share of the loot they all steal from taxpayers.

We (pubbies) just did that, A**hole. . We (legislators) mistakenly put country before party with your first stimulus and you promptly stole it from taxpayers and gave it to your union buds. What kind of fools do you think we are ?

Will you have the nerve to tout "green" jobs again in the wake of Solyndra ?(see paragraph #1)

Podhoretz thinks the substantive idea is utter nonsense, but he nevertheless believes Obama is sincere in believing the utter nonsense.

I do not believe Obama is sincere, to the contrary he is a demagogue. Like community organizing — they are not sincerely trying to solve the problems of a community, to the contrary their purpose is to “rub raw” the social discontent according to Alinsky.

Here, Obama is trying to foment enmity against Republicans by associating patriotism with big government control and calling the Republicans unpatriotic. He knows the MSM will pick up the theme and amplify it. But Obama is the very opposite of a patriot, and truth be told hates this country and everything it has traditionally stood for.

Palin was right in Iowa. Pay-to-play has been going on for a while, but when affected by Chicago thugs it gets very ugly. It has to stop.

Oh he’s right. Obama definitely believes it the moment it comes out of his mouth. Whether or not he believes it 10 minutes later is anyone’s guess.

“Here, Obama is trying to foment enmity against Republicans by associating patriotism with big government control and calling the Republicans unpatriotic.”

—I can’t speak for Podhoretz, but I certainly agree. It’s really disgusting when you put it in those terms.

(Part of me wonders though if essentially adopting McCain’s failed 2008 slogan will further backfire on our shameless, failed president.)

This "country before party" line is just another meaningless euphemism by Obama, wherein he trusts that the people will provide their own positive meaning for it, much like they did with his "hope and change" line in 2008. Sadly, his euphemisms come with a high price tag that trades liberty for the tyranny by making citizens and their children's children slaves to his "progressive" ideology. should put their duty to uphold the United States Constitution's limitations and restrictions on his/her power above the Party to which they belong, period!

No Party's philosophy is superior to the philosophy and principles of liberty incorporated into the Constitution's structuring and limitations on their power, because that "People's" Constitution was intended to bind those in government and preserve and protect the inalienable rights of the people.

Those who are part of the Tea Party movement today are, in fact, putting "country before party," by demanding that representatives in both Parties honor and uphold the Constitution. How dare he try to insinuate otherwise by pitting his own arrogant partisan ideas of "redistribution" of their earnings against their Constitution's limitations on his power to do so?

I wonder if he’ll be squealing “country before party” when the House presents it’s budget later this year. Amy jobs bill should be part of the new budget (want to bet it will?).
