Coulter: Palin's fans are a liability, she has become 'the Obama of the tea party'
The Daily Caller ^ | September 6, 2011 | Jeff Poor

It’s been three years since former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made her splash onto the national stage as Sen. John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election. And since then she has acquired a very loyal following. But is that helping or hurting her?

On Tuesday’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” conservative columnist and author of “Demonic: How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America,” Ann Coulter expressed her concern over the Palin phenomenon. She was asked by substitute host Laura Ingraham if Palin can maintain her status as a tea party favorite by stringing people along about her potential 2012 candidacy.

“Maybe not,” Coulter said. “Newt Gingrich carried it on for 15 years and I kind of think that might be what we’re getting here, largely because of the polls. I mean, you just showed the Fox News poll, Gallup took a poll, I don’t know – five, six months ago, showing that not quite as high as 74 percent, but 65 percent said they would never definitely, positively, ever vote for Sarah Palin… I might add, that oh, it’s the media’s fault and they attacked her and saw her as a threat, all of which I believe is true.”

Coulter pointed out that conservatives are reluctant to criticize Palin for fear of a backlash and spoke about her own experiences.

“Most Americans don’t want Sarah Palin for president,” Coulter continued. “But she’s become sort of the Obama of the tea party. She’s just the one to a certain segment of right-wingers and the tiniest criticism of her, I think many of your viewers may not know this – no conservative on TV will criticize Palin because they don’t want to deal with the hate mail. You say her voice is a few octaves too high or perhaps Michele Bachman’s speaking voice is more modulated and you will be inundated with enraged emails.”

But Coulter said that the loyal following Palin has could be a liability in the long run.

“No, I agree and I think she’s terrific at what she does, but I tend to agree with you,” Coulter said. “I got sick of it with Newt Gingrich – too, fish or cut bait because you are ginning up this group of Americans who will not even consider anyone else. You know, we used to all love Sarah Palin – conservatives like me for her enemies. I’m starting to dislike her because of her fans… I think she’s bright, but her good points do not seem to be in the direction of running for president. I sort of wish just like Newt Gingrich, just run so we can get this over with.”

Ann seems ever more desperate for attention.

Sarah resonates with conservatives to a degree that Ann never quite has, perhaps because of her rather abrasive edge, which is especially unpleasant when focused on fellow conservatives.

This is not a good career move for Ann unless she seeks to emulate Joe Scarborough's success path.

I not a Palin supporter. I’m not supporting anyone at this point. I have a relatively open mind. Oh, there are some I’ve dismissed out of hand, like Christie, Romney, and Gingrich. I don’t have a real problem with the “will she or won’t she” game Palin is playing. It keeps her in the media, it helps her raise money. If she runs, great, another conservative to choose from, another conservative to spread the message. If she doesn’t, she’ll probably use that money to back conservative candidates, like I think she did in 2010, or use it to run for the open Senate seat in Arizona. Either way is fine with me.

I don’t think the world will end if she doesn’t run. I don’t think she’ll run, but that’s my opinion. I just hope there aren’t too many Palin people who will refuse to support ANY Republican candidate if it’s not Palin.

I totally agree with your criticism of her fans and Alex’s wish for her to decide soon, but I think it’s a bit unfair to hold Palin’s overzealous supporters against her.

I don't hold it against Palin.

People are desperate for something to believe in, and act as humans always do when desperation sets in. That doesn't make the abandonment of civility or common sense right, but it is understandable. People want a white knight to ride in and fix everything, and they don't want to hear anything to the contrary.

First of all things, Palin is painted/tainted with the association with McCain. She has to remove this feature and I believe this is part of the reason she hedges on declaring- the old saying time heals. Palin’s latest Facebook or U-tube certainly shows intestinal fortitude to calling the cards that are being dealt by divers political factions. I’ve listened to Coulter over many months and cannot ride in her wagon. She is as much a self promoter as there is on the media. I don’t think she likes Palin for some reason(s).

With all due respect. Baloney.

As infuriating as Palin’s allegiance to McCain has been, I believe, had she turned her back on the person who elevated her to the national stage - she would have damaged her credibility as a person of solid, simple principles.

Loyalty, is way, way up on the list of important principles.

I have several of Coulter’s books. Used to like her alot. Didn’t buy the latest after her earlier BS. Not supporting with cash someone who no longer shares my views.

When given the choice between Palin and her ‘fans’ and Coulter and her ‘fabulous’ friends, it’s not a tough call. I’ll stick with the conservative. Palin. Who sold out and who remains true to the cause? Sorry Ann, you were a great writer, but somewhere you lost your perspective.

I'm for Palin beccause of what she has done in her life, the values she represents and lives, and the views and plans she is setting forth at a time when we need precisely those views put into action int eh Whiote House and in congress.

If she gets in, she has my support.

If (whether she gets in or not) Perry wins the primaries, he will have my support.

We MUST defeat Obama. I believe either Perry, Palin, or several others can beat him and carry a majority in the house ans Senate.

I do not need the media, the pundits, the insiders, or anyone else telling me who to vote for. I can make that decision very well myself, and base it on what I see for myself as opposed to all the polling data, professional opinons and the like.

I was alive and lived through the same type of hype about Reagan. If we had followed all the experts and polls of that day, we would not have had those eight wonderful, God-send years that helped turn America around back then.

TRANSCRIPT: Palin's speech in New Hampshire on Labor Day

People can read it for themselves and make up their opwn mind.

If the FR skies open up and there is a sudden flash of light, I just hope someone pings me to the zot. Are you even capable of saying anything that isn’t an attack on Palin or her supporters?

BTW have you gotten over your Christian mocking yet? Of all the PDS victims polluting FR, you definitely have one of the worst cases I’ve yet seen.

Palin fans on this board are...cultish to the point of being semi-creepy. Impervious to knowledge or logic. Devoid of even the slightest sense of tact. I just want she and her followers reFudiated.

Keep talking...
