CHARLOTTE - Police arrested at least 10 young illegal immigrants as they blocked traffic near Central Piedmont Community College Tuesday to protest policies they say discriminate against undocumented immigrants.
Nearly 200 people met on CPCC's central campus for a 1 p.m. "coming out" rally in which some protesters publicly announced they're living in the country illegally.
The group then marched around the school toward the intersection of Kings Drive and Fourth Street. The large group proceeded to block all four directions of traffic while chanting "education, not deportation" and "undocumented and unafraid."
As Charlotte-Mecklenburg police converged on the group, seven young people stepped into the middle of the intersection. One 25-year-old from Carrboro grabbed a bullhorn and announced:
"My name is Alicia Torres and I'm risking it all. Today is the day that I am coming out of the shadows and saying I exist. I am no longer going to be afraid. I am no longer going to wait around and watch my mom pray."
Before she could finish, officers encircled Torres, grabbed her arms and handcuffed her.

Telling everyone that you'll be involved with illegal activities - in advance? Not too bright.
Arrest them all and send them home, really will pee off rick Perry.
Snicker...
Don’t forget her mom too.
Damn sluts, demanding welfare and assistance. Nothing more than common criminals.
Not to mention Dubya, who never met an illegal immigrant he didn’t want to coddle. The Stupid Party lives up to its name by refusing to deport illegals, giving the Evil Party the chance to organize and legalize them.
It all played out first here in California, and now the Democrats have a lock on this barely-American state. Your state is next...
It is time that some of our s**t for brains lawmakers (at all levels), took a crash course in elementary English. “Illegal” means unlawful, outlaw, breaking the law, etc. ad nauseum. Breaking the law is supposed to have consequences. Before someone bashes me about being anti-immigrant, my grandfather was an immigrant; his wife was the daughter of immigrants. I have nothing against immigrants or immigration, AS LONG AS THEY FOLLOW THE LAW! But don’t sneak into the country and then expect special treatment.

Waaaaah. Waaaah. You can work in frickin Mexico, Angelica. Get out!
There are many "fields" in Mexico that need manual labor!
So, please, please, I ask: then why do they protest against everything once they are here? Why don't they take the necessary steps to get legal documentation and become legal residents? If they are afraid of being found out and being deported, why don't they behave respectfully and decently?
Why don't they stay quietly and act as though they appreciate anything they receive? Why don't they thank God or the stars, or even good luck for having ended up in a land where they can access free education, free housing, free medical care, free food - no matter how much or how little - it is still free and more than they had? Why don't they learn and obey our laws? Why don't they stand and salute OUR flag? And why the He** don't they LEARN ENGLISH?
As far as I am concerned, any illegal alien who demonstrates against anything in this country...deserves only one form of assistance: that is to be given temporary lodging locked up in a jail, and then an escort back home.
Thanks to the "Illegals First" 0b0z0-H0lder-Nap0litan0 axis policy.
DEPORT 0B0Z0!
And immediately released under Obama's no deportation policies for nice illegal aliens.
But,I need to work to pay my student loans!
They were blocking traffic at an intersection where they stood in the middle of the road with banners and signs purposely laid down across the pavement. This indicates to me that they wanted to get arrested. One of the local news channels covering the story also mentioned that some of the protesters were bussed in from New York.
Absolutely.
Our legal immigration laws need to be reformed to make it easier those who want to come here and contribute to do so.
I know a fair number of legal immigrants, productive, law abiding, with green cards, who are terrified of being deported for any capricious reason, and I do know of a professional couple who even had high level security clearance get kicked out. It’s ridiculous that the deadbeat, drug dealing, welfare sucking ones get to stay and those we would WANT to stay, fear (with good reason based on precedent) being kicked out.
f you have only one degree in psychology and are a natural born citizen you can’t work in your field either. You need at least a PhD, several clincals, etc., etc. It takes lots of degrees to call yourself a psychologist.
Only 15 arrested out of 200?
