NM governor says grandparents came to US illegally

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has acknowledged her paternal grandparents came to the U.S. illegally, amid national attention and protests over her ongoing efforts to bar illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses.

"I know they arrived without documents, especially my father's father," the Republican said Wednesday in an interview in Spanish with KLUZ-TV, the Albuquerque Univision affiliate.

Martinez has long acknowledged her Mexican heritage. But when asked previously about reports that her grandfather was an illegal immigrant, her office has said Martinez was unsure of his status since he abandoned the family when her father was young.

Her comments Wednesday appeared to be the first time she has answered the question definitively. The Santa Fe New Mexican reported in July that the 1930 U.S. Census Bureau record lists Martinez's paternal grandparents' citizenship status as "AL" for "alien," a status that refers to "all foreign-born persons neither naturalized nor having first papers." However, Martinez was not directly quoted in the story addressing her grandparents' immigration status.

Martinez spokesman Scott Darnell said Thursday the governor had just recently learned of her grandparents' immigration status through media reports that cited census records showing her grandfather entered the country illegally.

"The governor has no reason to question that 1930 Census record about her grandfather and has always known, and publicly spoken of the fact for years, that her family roots trace back to Mexico," Darnell said.

"It's unfortunate that some are choosing to personally attack the governor, but these tactics prove that supporters of giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants have run out of legitimate defenses for a bad policy."

My ancestors came to New Mexico and Colorado (territories) with Cortes. My grandparents were born as subjects of the King of Spain and then they became Mexicans.

The day they became Americans they cried with joy and would never let anyone speak Spanish in their home until the day they died.

I’m confused, is it being acknowledged that illegal incursion is bad, or are they saying there’s nothing to this intrigue. Sadly liberals get to twist whatever they want with the media making a hoopla to cover them.

Oh, I’m not really confused, I know there’s no logic to the attacks. But it would sure be confusing if one didn’t understand the way liberals work.

My ancestors arrived illegally on the MayFlower. Boy have the natives paid for their open border policy since!

What are these “first papers” that the “aliens” lacked? Would that mean what we call a passport today? Or lacking official permission to visit?

I personally believe she is an illegal since her grandfather is not from USA! AND why would anyone vote for her as governor is beyond me! I am soooo sick of all of the illegals who come to America and take away our rights as citizens and they actually have NO RIGHTS. That is my opinion and opinions are neither right nor wrong.

"...and opinions are neither right nor wrong."

Whoever told you that was expressing an incorrect opinion. At least, that is my opinion.

This was a different country 50+ years ago- very different. What we have today isn’t like the simple illegal immigration of 50-60 years ago, it is an invasion. So, I’m not particularly interested in these events that occurred many decades ago but I am greatly interested in what is happening along our southern border today.

Amen. Milton Friedman had lots to say about this - that there are real reasons to restrict illegal immigration in a welfare state.

Wow. You must be really old. Were your grandparents really born in the 1820s? You must be 150 years old for that story to make any sense whatsoever.

Believe what you want, but the fact is, having been born in El Paso in 1959, she's eligible to be President.

Apparently NO ONE reads what anyones writes. I NEVER said she was not born here in the USA. I SAID she is not a citizen of the USA, and she is NOT! YOU personally do not need to tell me she is, because she is NOT! The morons on this site pisses me off because NO ONE reads what anyones writes. They all “assume” they know, so they post. It cracks me up to read day after day what the morons write. It’s all so funny if you ask me. AND, YES I am a Republican who READS everything that is put in front of me! In the lack of you and many others who do NOT READ anything that is put in FRONT of themselves.

That is another example of what I was referring to in my earlier post.

So. If she's not a citizen, then she must have renounced her natural born citizenship. I'm sure that would have made the news, given she's governor of a US state. Do you have a link? Do you know your BAC?
