GOP candidates' debate Monday will have a Tea Party flavor
Miami Herald ^ | September 11, 2011 | David Lightman

[snip]

This year, Republican presidential candidates are aggressively courting the movement's eager-to-work followers and trying to tap into their influential social and fundraising networks.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, the founder of the House of Representatives Tea Party Caucus, and other diehard conservatives are already activists' favorites. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman are not; they're perceived as too moderate and compromising.

But in his economic blueprint, released last week, Romney lauded the movement, saying, "The rise of the tea party is a classic instance of the self-correcting forces of American democracy in action."

He still has a fight ahead. Tea party activists are particularly adamant that the 2010 federal health care law be repealed, and the Massachusetts near-universal health care plan that Romney signed into law is considered its model.

"Romney has good ideas and can articulate them well. But he doesn't have credibility," said David Woodard, a Clemson University political scientist and also a Republican consultant and author of "The New Southern Politics."

Perry, on the other hand, who overtook Romney in most national polls of Republican voters last month, is regarded warmly by tea partiers.

"He's not a perfect candidate. Bachmann is better. But I think Perry may have a better chance of winning," said Judson Phillips, founder of Tea Party Nation.

[snip]

But activists' approaches vary widely. Some want to see candidates get tougher. "Republicans need to be having a cage fight to see who can best eliminate all the government waste," said Phillips. "What have we heard so far from these Republicans? Crickets."

I think the conservative tide is coming in and will bring with it less lip service and more action.

That is my hope and my prayer.

Lazlo, I went to that thread you posted and watched those youtubes.

Not only did they confirm mnehring’s answer as to who the “Pautards” are, they also gave me a good laugh for today! How funny! Thanks for sharing.

Romney and Bachmann are getting the jump on the MSM.....

“The Goldwater Talking Point” (gearing up for Rick Perry)

>>>>>>”......Whenever a President is embattled, the media falls back to Truman.

But there is something else the media does — and typically does because of a leftward bias, a reliance on both establishment Republicans in Washington as their chief GOP sources and their Democratic friends as Democratic sources— they compare the Republican Primary to 1964.

Every conservative candidate must withstand the “Is he Barry Goldwater” question. Never mind that Barry Goldwater has been tried repeatedly by the Democrats and the only person it ever worked against was Barry Goldwater.

The Democrats have made clear, and the media is seizing on, President Obama’s campaign statements that if Rick Perry is the nominee, they’ll go with Goldwater 1964 and if Mitt Romney is the nominee, they’ll go with John Kerry 2004 as the flip flopping opportunist. Neither of these will work this year and all you have to do is follow along as I step in the way back machine and take you back to the news as it existed on the campaign trail of 1979 and 1980.

“Is defeat probable for GOP if Reagan wins nomination?” blared the headline of the Christian Science Monitor on March 5, 1980. That was just the start of it.“Can conservative Ronald Reagan possibly attract enough independent and Democratic votes to win in November?” wrote Richard J. Cattani in that Christian Science Monitor article. He continued,

“Reagan is the opponent of choice for Carter,” says I. A. Lewis, director of the Los Angeles Times Poll, a point on which most analysts agree. “But Reagan can reach across and cause mischief in the Democratic constituency,” Mr. Lewis says. “Reagan appeals to blue collar, working-class voters. He can win Democratic votes.”

“Carter could beat Reagan more easily than he could Bush or Baker,” Mr. Lewis says. “A moderate Republican would appeal to moderate Democrats, while upper-income Republicans might defect from Reagan to the Demcorats. Ford is of course, the strogest in the polls against Carter. But if he became a candidate, he could sink the same way Kennedy did after he declared.”

Elections analyst Richard Scammon, who thinks a candidate must command the political center to win the presidency, gives neither Reagan nor Ford much chance.

The Christian Science Monitor led the field for the month of March with a number of overwrought “analyses” on just how vulnerable Ronald Reagan was as a far right extremist. ........”<<<<<

I just wish these candidates will quit attacking each other’s position and making themslelves into bait for the Democrats and MSM. That’s where Herman Cain has stood out. He adds a touch of class to the whole affair, that’s why they won’t ask him many questions. Even if he has no chance, I would love to see him take a cabinet job in whoever’s administration....

I don't see Herman Cain as a shrinking violet or someone a smart leader wouldn't put to good use for the country.

Look at Cain's positives, back a few posts on this thread.

All of the ongoing and worsening U.S. illegal immigration problems are not being tackled “to the max”, either! More amnesty for illegal immigrants could kill off U.S. capitalism and U.S. conservatism, on all of the issues, as well as give the left a bunch of new, pro-leftist voters, each and every day onward!

The "Romney for President" organization has just committed political suicide.

That kind of nonsense might work on the morons that vote for democrats, but pisses off GOP primary voters big time.

Al Sharpton has a better shot at the GOP nomination at this point.

Somebody ought to tell this degenerate con man that America is a Constitutional Republic.

Democracies always die.

Angry electorate helps sustain tea party

By Rachel Streitfeld, CNN Political Producer
September 11, 2011 12:29 p.m. EDT

Snip........
For those who doubt the movement has moved toward the mainstream, the Tea Party Express will join CNN on Monday night to host a nationally televised forum where eight GOP presidential candidates will vie for tea party support.......

"We're not a protest movement anymore; we've morphed into something else," said Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, which has helped support tea party groups around the country. "We're a get-out-the-vote machine. We're organizing at the community level." ........

Tea Party Express Co-Chairman Amy Kremer said as the movement continues to mature, tea partiers are increasingly recognizing their activism can change outcomes in Washington. The bloc has become so powerful, she said, that a Republican could not win his or her party's nomination without tea party support.

"We're not going to sit back and just let the Republican party hand us the nominee," she said. "We're going to choose the nominee." .....

end snips
