Peanut butter prices expected to increase
WECT News ^

Posted on 09/12/2011 5:47:56 PM PDT by djf

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – You may see fewer peanuts on grocery store shelves this year and will likely pay more for peanut butter.

The US Department of Agriculture estimates this year's peanut crop could be 13 percent smaller than last year's because many farmers in Georgia and Texas have lost their crops to dry and hot weather conditions.

Many farmers in our area believe the demand for peanuts could help the local economy, despite also suffering a loss.

Some peanut butter companies have already raise their prices by a least 50 cents.

We were through the high plains of Texas last week and the cotton that was there looked good, but Hwy 84 that is usually wall-to-wall cotton fields was mostly just windmills. Lots did not get planted.

Here in NE Louisiana, we are actually having a pretty good year cotton-wise. We will start picking next week and have been pleased with the look of both the irrigated and dryland crops. The couple of rains that we did get came at the right times.

"Is there any segment of the US agricultural industry that prices their product according to the time averaged statistical occurrence of unfavorable harvests, or is “a bad year” simply the perennial excuse for food price inflation?"

The commodity market is played by a bunch of people who have never seen an actual field. The farmers, who ARE agriculture, don't get to decide how much they charge unless they have tens of millions of dollars worth of storage and can hold their harvests and wait for a favorable market.

There is "a bad year" somewhere or several somewheres in the world every year. That is the weather and natural disasters, not producers making excuses.

You got off to good start, but forgot to stop once you asked the pertinant question;

Is there any segment of the US agricultural industry that prices their product?

The answer is no, the pricing occurs above the agricultural layer.

My grandfather raised a field of them in Oregon during the early ‘40s. I don’t remember how well they did (I was kinda young) but I do remember eating some of them. If I had some acreage I might give thema try.

I think I’ll buy several pounds of shelled and vacuum seal them in the gallon mason jars I bought. That should keep them good for a year or more.

Duh. They’d be going up anyway. Everything has gone up. Everything has gone up a lot the last year. 15-20% on average.

Peanuts are the largest export of many west African nations. I’m surprised we’re not being force fed the damn things yet.

Nutella is stupid-good. My kids adore it. Sometimes they even use Nutella and peanut butter together... similar to a peanut butter cup sandwich. YUM!
