AUSTIN, Texas – A Texas teenager was charged with assault after six students were hospitalized when they ate marijuana-laden brownies he served them at a school band practice, myFOXaustin.com reported Wednesday.
Kevin Coffey, a 17-year-old student at Austin's Lake Travis High School, told authorities he didn't know the brownies contained drugs when he handed them out -- but police said text messages he had sent to friends proved otherwise.
Police said many of the students were unaware of the brownies being laced with pot and six were transported to the hospital by their parents.

Just how do you propose a parent react when their kid comes home and begins exhibiting symptoms like nothing they have ever seen before? I wouldn’t hesitate to haul my kid to the ER and I can assure you I will beat the d!ckhead to a pulp that was responsible.
Here is what I found when I searcher eating marijuana:

The bad news is that there’s no escaping the unwanted side effects, including dry mouth, blood-shot eyes, and increased heart rate and blood pressure until the body breaks down the drug. Moreover, these effects may actually be more severe and last longer when food is spiked with marijuana because marijuana has a stronger, more prolonged effect on the body when it’s eaten. This makes activities that require concentration and coordination, such as schoolwork, driving, or operating heavy machinery, even more problematic or dangerous while under the influence. Back in my school days(60s)we made brownies laced with Exlax.
The result was much slower but the kids that ate them sure had a long stint at the porcelain relief seat within hours of eating them.
I wonder what we would have made if we had access to that wonderful laxative the give you for a colonoscopy . I guess we would have served them lemonade or some type of juice to mask the horrible taste. However, the result would have been much better than the old Exlax.
The effect of ingesting it orally has a much more subtle onset, is far longer lasting, and depending on the amount put into the brownies, can far exceed the amount one can absorb from smoking.
I would think that for someone who didn’t know what was going on, it could be extraordinarily frightening, and trigger a nasty panic attack.
I don’t doubt that some of them were taken to a hospital. That is a terrible, mean thing to do to an unsuspecting person. I bet this piece of crap deliberately gave the laced brownies only to kids who it was known didn’t get high.
When I was kid, living overseas in the Philippines during the Sixties, I was a bit nervous about coming back to the states. I had heard stories about kids having acid dropped in their food, and I believed them.

It is one thing if the kids who ate the brownies were friends of the kid who handed them out and were experienced...it is a completely different thing if the kids were unaware, especially if there was a lot of marijuana in those.
I had a comparable experience once, where I ate an entire bag of chocolate covered expresso beans. A cup of coffee to someone who doesn’t drink coffee can be an excellent stimulant. An entire bag of expresso beans to someone who doesn’t use caffeine is an exceedingly unpleasant experience. I could deal with it, because I knew what it was, and figured it was going to wear off eventually. To a young, unexperienced and unsuspecting kid given heavily laced marijuana brownies, it would not be a case of having the munchies, it would be a frightening experience, of that I have no doubt.
According to your own info it’s temporary, not fatal, and unavoidable. So what is the ER supposed to do other than babysit the kid for you?
No wonder the cost of health care is going through the roof.

Yep, I remember those stunts. In high school (mid- to late-'70s), we had a soft-serve ice cream machine and the school was foolish enough to let students have direct access to it, self-service style. Yes, someone dumped in a bottle of that liquid chocolate-flavored laxative.
For once, my lactose intolerance saved the day!
I’ve deduced the following:
1. You didn’t read the article.
2. You don’t have children.
3. You probably should never have children.
The ER did exactly what they’re supposed to do, diagnosed the situation. I’ll give you one thing, you’re way of thinking would greatly cut health care costs.

I think they're telling us that none of the hospitalized kids' parents had been stoned before.
That’s a battery, if they ate them, although there ought to be a law that fits the situation better, like giving someone a date rape drug against their will, or a mickie.
The young adults of today are very easily offended and frightened. Those running their schools are borderline hysterical idiots.

I raised four children and helped raise plenty more
I knew how to take care of their minor self limited health situations without freaking out, melting down, and hauling them down to the hospital for every little thing.
A little more experience in parenting and life and you’ll be able to do it too WinMod70. I wish you and your kids nothing but the best. Really.
