It was a long, hot spring and summer on the streets of Greece, England and Madrid, as protesters and rioters vented their fury at high unemployment, painful austerity measures and following a fatal police shooting in London.
The US, meanwhile, has been virtually free of rioting and even of widespread peaceful political protest.
This is despite some of the highest unemployment in decades, growing income inequality, dissatisfaction with the nation's direction, frustration with its dysfunctional government and the threat of drastic cuts to social programmes.
On Friday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg raised the spectre of social unrest amid high unemployment among young Americans.

Everyone tell the spouse and kids that you don't want a new tie, pair of socks or new shirt for Christmas or your birthday. Instead, a couple of boxes of ammo every time that special occasion rolls around would be more than welcome. In Arizona, it wasn’t an issue. Unfortunately I don’t live in AZ now and here the PTBs aren’t as understanding. You have to go to the sheriff’s office with a list of references and money, fill out their form and then wait for a permit to buy a handgun. Crazy.
The principal difference is that rioters in Europe know perfectly well that nothing is going to happen to them and that no matter what they wreck during the tantrum their government will replace it for them, gratis. In America the only places that assurance holds is within cities already committed to the support of the welfare class; elsewhere, they're likely to be shot and will not receive the customary European media lionization and orgy of recrimination against the middle class. Not here. No sympathy.
To a great degree the BBC is not an observer, but an acting and gleeful co-conspirator in this ridiculous Kabuki dance of class warfare. It's long past time for such adolescent fantasies to be set aside, IMHO - the papier-mache street puppets don't shoot back, and this...stuff...just got real.
