Charles Rangel on Rick Perry: 'Tall and he's from Texas' (crashes Perry's Harlem luncheon talk)

Rick Perry scrambled for cash in upper Manhattan at what was supposed to be a quiet fundraiser with Hispanic businessmen - and instead turned into a local New York City political circus, replete with a gatecrashing appearance by Rep. Charles Rangel.

The event, which was coordinated by local Hispanic activists and New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers head Fernando Mateo, was half fundraiser and half meet-and-greet at a restaurant in the Inwood section of Manhattan. Continue Reading

Perry's people had expected the event to stay off record, including from any publicity. But instead, a media throng awaited Perry as he dodged into the restaurant to the waiting group at Papasito Mexican Grill of a couple dozen businessmen - and Rangel, who had waltzed in earlier.

"I wanted to make him feel comfortable," Rangel told reporters about his visit to an enemy camp event, which was held in his district.

"He's a statesman and we won't turn anyone away," said Mateo of Rangel, though he at least appeared less than pleased to see the congressman.

Rangel stayed for several minutes, telling reporters on his way out that he had shown up to make Perry “feel more comfortable”

"I would not want to embarrass him here," Rangel said, adding his opinion of Perry: "He’s tall and he’s from Texas."

Mateo, however, was thrilled to see Perry, calling him "the medicine this country needs (right) now."

The only thing Ronald Reagan and Perry have in common is that they served as Governors. It stops there. Reagan was a stalwart Conservative before he held office, and he had the credentials that made him Presidential material just two short years into office, much like a certain other ex-Governor from Alaska.

Perry, conversely, was an opportunistic Democrat, but yet who never had Conservative credentials. Indeed, he has far more in common with fellow ex-Gov Slick Willard. Good hair and a lot of talk that doesn’t match the record of supporting open borders, big government, and liberal politicians from Al Gore to Giuliani. Mediocre at best, dreadful at worst. This conjuring up some magical, mystical Perry that is the Second Coming for Conservatism is what is not productive and in fact harmful. This guy should’ve retired from the Governorship in 2006 so we would’ve had a REAL Conservative from Texas today, Michael Williams.

I’m not going to fight with you fieldmarshaldj and I hope no one else bothers either. You’ve made your position clear. Please go somewhere where your candidate is being discussed and be supportive of them, instead of tearing down a good conservative GOP candidate on this or other threads.

There’s no “good Conservative” GOP candidate you’re touting here, just another tired, phony RINO pretty boy flash-in-the-pan. No amount of putting your fingers in your ears or covering your eyes will change that. Face facts, Rick Perry has more red flags than a May Day Parade.

You also left out the Reagan legacy that went on and on, King Day, S. D. O’Connor, and Anthony Kennedy.

If memory serves me right, President Reagan was also a former Democrat.

Yes, long before he held office. He was already a strong Conservative by then and out campaigning for Goldwater before he became Governor. Perry ? He was Al Gore’s Texas Campaign Manager and Giuliani’s biggest booster in 2008. The issue here is Conservatism, and Perry doesn’t have the credentials.

I'm a Sarah guy {if she gets into the race} but I like Perry's guts.

Going into Harlem, even with body guards, is literally taking your life in your hands.

Life is cheap in Harlem.

Rangel is like alsharpton, a race pimp.

This will play well as Rangel attempting to spook Perry but that is not what it really is.

Rangel, is nothing more than a thug who wanted to 'remind" those businessmen and anyone else who wants to support a republican, that this is and still will be Rangel's turf, he's watching ...

Typical hoodlum.

Exactly!

Note: "...After arriving at the Papasito Mexican Grill, Rangel said he understood that “one of the community leaders had invited a distinguished guest—to my city and specifically to my congressional district.”...

Rangel was sending a message to the other people in the neighborhood --- they better remember he's the boss.

It tells conservatives that the people in his district are ready to leave the Rangel "plantation" and join the party that wants everyone to succeed.

It’s amazing how they immediately launch into tearing down Reagan in some sort of bizarre kabuki theater schtick in that that will apparently make Perry look like the Second Coming. I mean Reagan the Huntsman of this race ? Perry more Conservative than Reagan when he was championing the Socialist, Hate-America party who opposed him ? This is just such garbage that I find it difficult to believe the poster isn’t engaging in wanton lunacy just to amuse himself.

To me it looks like Rangel may be already considering his own eventual vulnerability.....after Turner’s recent win. Kudos to Perry for going there!

Perry should have walked up to Rangel, shook his hand and greeted him as he would a long lost friend. Lots of pictures should have been taken.

I think Rangel arrived early and was inside when Perry got there — then left before Perry spoke. It was just a photo-op and sound bite orchestrated for Rangel, by Rangel, but very very telling.

.........."Again, as with Jews, the polling data show something different – declining support that closely parallels the decline among non-Latino white voters.

With Obama's support having dropped at roughly the same rate among multiple subgroups – African Americans being the one great exception – the logical conclusion is that his problem is not any individual issue, such as Israel or immigration, but rather the overall problem facing the nation........"
