A defense lawyer says a police officer has been charged with murder in the death of a mentally ill homeless man in Southern California.

Attorney John Barnett says his client, Fullerton police Officer Manuel Ramos, surrendered to authorities Wednesday and was being charged with second-degree murder.

The Orange County district attorney's office was set to announce the charge in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas after a violent confrontation on July 5 with Fullerton officers.

Six officers were placed on paid administrative leave after the incident that occurred while police were investigating reported vehicle break-ins at a transit hub.

Thomas suffered severe head and neck injuries and was taken off life support five days later.

And just think. All of those cops were back out on the streets the next day free as birds for a month until the father made a stink with a picture so graphic that only the Telegraph UK would print it. So much for the US media.

The other cop indicted is white, so the race card doesn't hold up.

Not quite. It was Officer Manuel Ramos who calmly put his gloves on, then told the unarmed white guy, "See these fists, they going to beat your ass".

I would have charged the other cops that were there and did nothing to stop that brutality as accessories though. Also, if anyone falsified any reports/records or stonewalled the investigation in any way, they should be charged as accessories after the fact. IANAL though.

Fullerton would probably be burning right now if he didn’t charge at least these two.

Folks were/are righteously pi$$ed about this and the rest of the FPD (giving those not involved the benefit of the doubt) are paying the price.

Some guy living in Berlin, who posts here, kept telling me that, even with video and multiple corroborating witness statements.

Sometimes the cops themselves are hardest on colleagues who betray their trust.

Unless your police captain friend is testifying under oath against his colleagues who betrayed his trust, his strong words and a quarter will get you a gumball.

If more cops would step up and loudly condemn the thugs and criminals hiding in their midst, they'd have more credibility.

You insisted that all six policemen must be guilty.

I said wait for the investigation, and that it could be one policeman used excessive force and will be charged.

You still insisted, numerous times that all six must be guilty because of witnesses and video evidence.

As it turns out I was the one that was more correct (2 cops instead of 1 charged) and you were very badly mistaken by insisting all 6 were guilty.

Now you are conveniently changing your view that the policeman might be a racist, while misrepresenting my position on this case. Whatever... not surprised.

I promised you a reply when the investigation is complete so this is it. You were wrong, I was correct.

“The father of this poor man has to live...”

I think that part of the story stands out most in my mind. To know that your son was calling out to God and for his Dad for help while being beaten to death is beyond cruel and ruthless. I personally believe this: it happened because this young man was homeless. Could it have happened to a business man wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase? Yes... but less likely. The so called law enforcement officers felt that this man was a nothing, a nobody. I truly pray that justice will be done or his death would be in vain. I hope for a maximum sentence. Why? Because it may shock some law enforcement people into knowing that there aren’t any nobody’s or nothings.

Any cop who stood by and watched a murder take place and did nothing is as guilty as hell in my book. The fact that they avoided charges is meaningless. They stood by and watched a man be beaten to death, they are a disgrace and have no business in any position of authority.

The policemen did not stand by and watch the suspect beaten to death, simply because the man died days later... when the police were not there watching him die.

The police took him in about 2 minutes. Standing there doing nothing would be much longer than that.

The fact that the other four policemen are not charged is because America is a nation of law. There are people let go all the time who were at the scene of a crime, even from in the car or home of the offense taking place by another.

Did any of the other cops report the crime? If not they are guilty of Misprison of Felony, 18 US Code 4.

That Maniac cop is totally out of control. Driver is lucky he didn’t get “executed” right then and there. That cop must be related to the other lunatic who threatened to execute a guy for carrying concealed a few months back, after searching his car...

Such a wonderful, expressive, colorful vocabulary this Public SERVANT has for one of his employers...you know, the citizen who pays his salary - just because that citizen dared to tell the cop he needed a warrant to search the vehicle.

This is what happens when you go from “Peace Officer” to “LAW ENFORCEMENT (damnit!) OFFICER”

When guys like this one get popped, I shed no tears. Seriously.

I know there’s good cops out there, family guys doing thier jobs, and doing them well; to them I say - You guys SERIOUSLY need to start sh*tcanning these maniacs with badges. They should be made into janitors, not Agents of the State with peoples’ lives on their hip.

Instead of closing ranks around “a brother officer” you better start policing yourselves. Citizens are fed up with this sh*t.

If that is true then they would need to be found guilty, in a court of law. There is still an FBI investigation?

I would think, not being an expert, that sort of charge may be part of that civil rights investigation.

Fullerton isn't Watts, or Compton.

Highly doubt people would have burnt their city down.

I know I wouldn't have..when I lived in Fullerton.
