Memo to Perry: Dog-cuss the Democrats, not the 'cue
Southern Political Report ^ | September 22, 2011 | Tom Baxter

Rick Perry has some splainin’ to do when he gets to Eastern North Carolina, and we’re not talking about his dog-cussing of Democrats and Ben Bernanke.

Back when he was the Texas agriculture commissioner, Perry tried some Eastern North Carolina barbecue at the 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston, and reportedly said, “I’ve had road kill that tasted better than that.”

The remark got picked in a book, “Holy Smoke: the Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue,” by John Shelton Reed and Dale Volberg Reed. That volume is probably making the rounds of Mitt Romney’s headquarters right now.

2. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

Texas BBQ is made on a pit using coals for heat, not baked in an oven!

the irony is that the last part of

Morals aren’t as high as Tolbert’s (I use tomato sauce), but I try to maintain the purity.

LOL! I lived in Ohio for a few years. Don’t remember any Ohio BBQ sauce. Do remember their Chili always had beans. (referring to your Buckeye moniker)

No beans, no tomatoes either. :)

Yep, I remember. But when I had Skyline, I NEVER ordered it with beans. Of course Skyline is quite a bit different from Texas-style chili, but awesome all the same in a different way.

If he really said that, I hope he was just having an unusual bad moment. I’d like to think that serious candidates for our nation’s highest office have a bit more manners than that.

If he did say it, it was almost 20 years ago.

And if he did say it, he was probably just telling the truth. ;-)

Mexicans don't know squat about barbecue, either -- the original barbecue was the barbacoa discovered being cooked by Carancahua (Karankawa) Indians in the Coastal Bend country of Texas by Cabeza de Vaca.

One of the Carancahuas' favorite barbecue dishes was people.

I’m from the South, and I know what you are saying. I think you’ve hit on the truth of the whole issue, and in that context, Rick Perry’s comments are just part of the bantering. I couldn’t believe that he’d be so much of an oaf to say something like that seriously. I really thought this whole thing was a myth, but you’ve changed my mind. Again, thanks for the comments!

I’ve enjoyed the chat on this too - a not so serious subject. Remember, Perry was just some sort of delegate at this convention and probably held some state office of some kind. He was not governor or a Prez candidate by any means. These delegates drink, wear silly hats, carry signs — I mean a convention is part party and you just know they bust each others chops in jest all the time. They probably also traded joke insults about college football teams and all kinds of stuff.

I mean I was not there obviously - but I would have to guess this is how it happened.

Again, enjoyed the chat....

That’s right on the money. Texas does beef ribs.

I remember ordering ribs outside of a Texas BBQ and wondering if they had some sort of midget cows from where they got the ribs. That is, till I tasted it. Pork ribs just aren’t ‘right’.

Beef is what’s for dinner.
