Perry on shaky ground? Doubts among some in GOP

EXETER, N.H. — Rick Perry is struggling.

Republicans in early voting states, once excited about the Texas governor's presidential bid, are openly questioning the strength of his candidacy. High expectations have been met by the sudden national scrutiny that comes with the front-runner bull's-eye.

Perry is leading national polls, but he is also facing intensifying criticism from the right and left. Some Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire are expressing doubts, especially after debates in which rivals raised questions about his record on immigration, public health and Social Security.

One national immigration group says Perry is finished. Conservatives are slamming his support of education benefits for illegal immigrants.

I left the Republican party when Dubya took his stand over illegals.

I left before that but I did leave. And that was after 30+ years as an activist in the Republican Party.

No more liberal/moderate/compassionate conservatives.

Maybe Perry really is a dumb ass.

Dumbass?

You decide.

“Many here early on tried to warn that Perry had feet of clay”
______________________________________________________________________________________________

Yes they did. I was one of them. This last Texas legislative session did it for me on Perry.

His “slow walking” some of the better anti illegal immigration bills was infuriating.

Jan Brewer is carrying Perry’s short one’s around in her purse. She borrowed them a while back when Arizona passed SB1070.

Perry needs them back.

Conclusion – he has Nothing. He totally comes across as a buffoon, and the least prepared candidate on the stage.

Buffoon? You decide.

“Perry on shaky ground?”

Try quicksand.

And sinking fast.

But at least he’s against illegals. Isn’t he?

This week.

Good thing we have Romney to fall back on.

So, by your logic, we ought to close our eyes to all of Rick Perry's disqualifiers, and accept him the same way the Dems accepted Obama?

That's not conservative thinking. It's just nuts.

Many here early on tried to warn that Perry had feet of clay.

It is not enough to find fault with Rick Perry. One must choose someone else to support instead. That remains the hard part.

You don’t have to be clairvoyant to see what the media & establishment Repubicans are pushing. They’ve all but destroyed Perry on one issue, one issue with all the crap this country is going through. Not the right to bear arms, abortion, or freedom of religion. Not low taxes, less regulation, or job creation. No, they’ve pretty much knocked him out of the race with illegal immigration.

And who was the media and establishment GOP pushing 4 years ago? Wasn’t Rudy or Huckabee. It was a broken-down RINO that none of us wanted to support. If it hadn’t been for Sarah, he’d had a miserable turnout.

Nope, you don’t have to be clairvoyant, just observant. The media still wants a liberal and the establishment GOP still want a “moderate”. So Romney or Christie is their win/win and so far they’re doing a good job of manipulating the vote. Just like 2008.

Better now rather than later as the Republican nominee.

...basically it would’ve have become US/MEX,NIG,HONDOU,GUAT, health plan with US taxpayers footing the bill.

Not really. He authorized a committee to look into a system where Americans and Mexicans could use their own insurance in each others country. A lot of Mexicans go to Texas legally and do have insurance, and vica versa. But if you go hospital they won't take it. In any case the committee determined that there were too many legal roadblocks, and nothing came of it.

What destroyed Perry was his own record. So if you're looking to assign blame that's where it belongs. And it wasn't just one issue. His record stinks, I've been saying that for weeks. I've also been saying his popularity would wane once it saw the light of day and that is exactly what happened.

Perry may be liked in his home state of Texas but conservatives in the rest of the country think he stinks.

“Better now rather than later as the Republican nominee.”

Exactly.

It’s called vetting, and it’s about time conservatives do it, otherwise the left wing media and establishment GOP will do it for us.

Are you saying that Perry is only preferable to Romney? That’s rather sad.

No, I'm saying Perry is preferable to most. The exception is Cain, I really like him; but then I digress. I agree with most of Perry's positions. I don't agree with him on immigration but it's ONE ISSUE.

And I like the things he says when he's not in a debate. Like in LA:

"It saddens me when sometimes my fellow Republicans duck and cover in the face of pressure from the left. Our party cannot be all things to all people. Our opponents on the left are never going to like us, so let's quit trying to curry favor with them!"

No, I was being serious. If Perry flames out, which of the remaining potential nominees can beat Obama? In my mind, only Romney. He will likely win the nomination by default, and he'll probably beat Obama (if he can convince evangelicals that he doesn't belong to a cult). It's too bad, because in some ways, Perry was more conservative, but that's how it works.

I understand that completely. But some believe if everyone doesn't get behind their favorite candidate it's because they want Romney or something worse. I don't understand that reasoning. The election is still nearly 14 months away so we have all the time needed to nominate a real conservative. As I have known for months and as many are just finding out, that description does not apply to Rick Perry.

Good Lord! Baffles the mind that there are so many on FR that will still go to the wall for this guy no matter what he says or does. As hard to budge as those who supported Huckabee or Ron Paul in 2008
