It's meant to be racist, and it's meant to be discriminatory.
But the controversial "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" hosted by the Berkeley College Republicans is still on, the club's president said, despite "grossly misguided comments" and threats aimed toward supporters of the University of California Berkeley student group.
During the sale, scheduled for Tuesday, baked goods will be sold to white men for $2, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1, black men for $0.75 and Native American men for $0.25. All women will get $0.25 off those prices.
The bake sale is meant to draw attention to pending legislation that would allow California universities consider race or national origin during the admission process.
"We agree that the event is inherently racist, but that is the point," BCR President Shawn Lewis wrote in response to backlash to the event. "It is no more racist than giving an individual an advantage in college admissions based solely on their race (or) gender."
Berkeley's student government, the Associated Students of the University of California, held an emergency Senate meeting late Sunday to discuss the issue and passed a resolution that, in part, "condemns the use of discrimination whether it is in satire or in seriousness by any student group."
"I completely support the idea of BCR -- or any students on campus -- (having) political discussion," ASUC President Vishalli Loomba said. "I think student members of BCR have a full right to express their feelings, but I don't necessarily think this tactic is constructive. I strongly encourage them to engage in this dialogue in a more constructive manner, such as a forum or a town hall meeting.'
But the bake sale is intended to be a direct, "physical" response to an ASUC-sponsored phone bank -- also scheduled for Tuesday -- where students will be encouraged to call...

They can call it whatever they want, but affirmative action is still discrimination. It happens all the time. It’s affected me and mine. My son, for example, was denied an academic scholarship solely because he’s the wrong race. Had he been a minority, he would have received help, but since he’s an evil white guy, he’s held to a higher standard.
Now I know it’s nice if one is on the up side of discrimination. I’m sure a number of white males liked it when they were on top, but what’s that saying? Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Right now, millions of people benefit from racial and sex-based preferences. They’re on the up side of this, and they won’t want to voluntarily relinquish their preferred status any more than a lot of whites (which we did BTW). That’s a shame, because we’ll never have a chance at peace so long as government plays favorites.
Do they accept EBT cards? Food stamps?
Fresh Wind: “Truth is, that’s exactly how Federal contracting is being done right now.”
I don’t know if that’s common knowledge, but you’re right. Minorities create “businesses” that do little more than act as intermediaries between the government and white-owned businesses. They use their minority status to win contracts, then subcontract the business out to very (non-minority) businesses they beat out. I’m told there’s some very good money in it if one knows what to do. I don’t know if it’s legal or not, but it’s definitely done. I can’t blame the minorities if it’s legal, because they didn’t set up the lopsided contracting system.
>>IMHO, the price scale should have started with the white guys paying the dead cost of the cup cakes<<
The cupcakes don’t appear out of thin air. Someone is paying for them. Wonder how many non-white republicans there are at this school?

In other news, the student government welcomed the Vagina Monologues returning to campus this year.
Super brilliant!
Republicans, in Berserkley? Who knew? < /sarc >

So right you are. Using the liberal model, a govt loan (Solyndra) would be granted.
This cup cake sale could have been a perfect summary of what’s going on today. They just narrowed the issue to affirmative action.
It's completely legal.
And if TEA Party experience is any indicator, how well they handle being loved to death!
The Young Republicans have done this before.
I can only hope they'll also point out what HYPICRITES their detractors are.
Having your class admissions based on race is okay, but doing the same for baked goods is racist?
They might run out onf the Asian bucket prices. People have been complaining for years that Asians dominate the UC System particularly Berkeley.
>>Using the liberal model, a govt loan (Solyndra) would be granted.<<
Doubled down fantastic lesson. Spot on!
In other words, this is too concrete! You need to move the debate to an abstract form where we can hear about feelings, fairness and correcting social injustice.
CA voted to end such institutionalized racism in higher education admissions with Prop 209 (1996). It's improper for the legislature to attempt circumventing this vote.
