Iran says could deploy navy near U.S. coast: report Photo 11:55am EDT

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.

"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, Sayyari gave no details of when such a deployment could happen or the number or type of vessels to be used.

The declaration comes just weeks after Turkey said it would host a NATO early warning radar system which will help spot missile threats from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The decision has angered Tehran which had enjoyed close relations with Ankara.

And it comes a few months after Iran sent warships through the Suez canal, after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the first time the Islamic Republic had deployed navy vessels in the Mediterranean.

Cool, I am sure the Navy could use more targets for it’s live fire exercises.

Yeah right. I’d just love to understand how their supply chain is going to work to support that with food, fuel, and most importantly, ships parts when some equipment breaks down. They have no ability for underway replishment like the US Navy.

They certainly could. No doubt about it. Just like I could wake up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet. It could happen.

Any boat can be a submarine, once.

I’m sure Obama would invite them into Norfolk for whatever supplies they need.

Step 1. Jam them.

Step 2. Start Target practice.

Step 3. Destroy all targets.

Step 4. Drink a celebratory beer.

They would go broke trying to keep the supply chain going with no nearby land bases for resupply and R&R. I bet they would get bored with the whole thing after a couple of months.

I also wonder how many Iranians would jump ship.

Our military will convert their submarines, at no charge,
to “holy vessels”. (72 x ? clones of Helen Thomas included as an added bonus)

The Iranian Navy off our East Coast?

By gad, Sir, that IS serious. Issue every member of the Larchmont Yacht Club a Smith and Wesson .45, and smoke bombs. All committee boats to be issued live ammunition for their starting guns. Make'em count, fellows! Also let it be known far and wide, that even if an Iranian Naval Vessel is on the starboard tack, they shall not, SHALL NOT call for right of weigh (or however that is spelled in this instance). I also suggest we re-number all inshore marks. (heh-heh ... that'll f'emup!)

If they intend to enter the Chesapeake, we may have to limit hours at Annapolis drinking establishments. This, this is war!

Relax. I know the Straits of Hormuz, and you simply cahn't get heah from theah.

“Deploy near US coast? Yeah, then what, Sparky?”

Deploy nuclear mines? Wait until there is minimum coverage and then race into a port and detonate a nuclear bomb? (Do you think Obama would allow the Navy to sink a little boat just because it was heading towards a port? Remember “courageous restraint!”) Deploy regular mines that can be turned on by remote control? Gather electronic intelligence? Deploy and supply terrorist teams?
Remember, these aren’t the Soviets, who were led by a bunch of octogenarians only interested in maintaining their dachas and their status. These are people who dress their babies in bomb suits for party pictures. Don’t expect rational thought from an apocalyptic culture that was born to bring jihad to the world so everybody they know could die in the glorious return of the 12th imam.
