Why young Christians aren't waiting anymore
CNN ^ | September 27th, 2011 | John Blake

A young Christian at an purity rally spreads the word.

True love doesn’t wait after all.

That’s the implication in the upcoming October issue of an evangelical magazine that claims that young, unmarried Christians are having premarital sex almost as much as their non-Christian peers.

The article in Relevant magazine, entitled “(Almost) Everyone’s Doing It,” cited several studies examining the sexual activity of single Christians. One of the biggest surprises was a December 2009 study, conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, which included information on sexual activity.

While the study’s primary report did not explore religion, some additional analysis focusing on sexual activity and religious identification yielded this result: 80 percent of unmarried evangelical young adults (18 to 29) said that they have had sex - slightly less than 88 percent of unmarried adults, according to the teen pregnancy prevention organization.

The article highlights what challenges abstinence movements face. Movements such as “True Love Waits,” encourage teens to wear purity rings, sign virginity pledges and pledge chastity during public ceremonies.

Yet many of these Christian youths eventually abandon their purity pledges, Relevant’s Tyler Charles concludes in the article. Tyler talked to people like “Maria,” an evangelical woman who said she wanted to wait until marriage to have sex.

But she said she started having sex with her college boyfriend when she turned 20 because nearly everyone, even most of her Christian friends, were having sex.

Part of the issue here is what is the definition of a christian. It used to be a christian was something who believed very specific things about Jesus. Now a christian is someone who believes anything about Jesus. They can be entirely void of any theological convictions and still call themselves christians.

I thought it’s “harder” for a man!?

No, not at all.

“There is not a sitcom or anything else on prime time TV these days that isn’t one long line of sex jokes. None.”

I’d swear you are correct.

Besides being morally repugnant, frankly it’s getting very boring. 20 years of nothing but sex. Just how many jokes can you get out of this?

Seems it’s more like having some reason to visit a church. Which is better than not having a reason to visit a church, but still....

You are exactly right....it is the devil and he has his army of Marxists, homosexuals, feminists, leftists.....those groups that reject God and God’s design who are intent on creating a bunch of useless idiots who can’t think.

Many of the masses can be saved....they can’t see the deception—yet. I have seen some people wake up....there is always hope!! We know who wins in the end!

I remember finding out that several of the women in my bible study didn’t wait. They were sure at the time that the man they loved and wanted to keep so much would just leave them for somebody who would “put out” if they insisted on waiting. They were afraid to seem odd and out-of-date. These people ultimately married the man they were sure they needed. One said it wasn’t until her husband had daughters of his own that he re-thought whether pre-marital sex had been appropriate.

I waited and it took me until 34 to get married. I felt like a total anachronism, but somehow I just couldn’t picture saying on my wedding night, “yeah, I always knew you would come along, but I just got so tired of waiting around.....”

Heresy yes, but we both think it’s probably true. His schoolnis wonderful, but it is not perfect. There are lots of kids with lots of money and worried about appearances. Lots of the kids don’t go to church regularly. The teachers, staff, and Christian kids do their best to witness to these kids. At least, they are hearing the word constantly at school.

“However schools in liberal land DO have more sexually active teens because no matter how “religious” they are, they are on the left side of that denomination.”

You can not back up that assertion.

Thank you. I was now able to use that article as a good example of a manipulative antichristian CNN article to my college christian friends

Your first paragraph is universal - very interesting. The Christians I have talked to in Oklahoma USA, in Sofia Bulgaria, in Nairobi Kenya, in Lagos Nigeria, and in several other places, all say the same thing. I find that very interesting how people from very different locations say the same things.

Another similarity is the second paragraph of your post - aboutthose who wait. I only know of one couple where BOTH waited. Normally it is only one who waits.

My wife and I were just talking about that show yesterday. It’s a singular, insidious evil in that it’s dressed up very convincingly as a “fun for kids of all ages!” kind of show, but it merely spreads a vile form of evil that can’t easily be criticized since most people won’t even know what the critic is talking about. Awful, awful show.
