First Boeing 787 lands in Japan

TOKYO (AP) -- The first Boeing 787 landed Wednesday in Tokyo where launch customer All Nippon Airways will prepare the long-delayed aircraft for its inaugural commercial flight.

The plane took off from Everett, Washington Tuesday morning to cheering workers after a three-year delay in bringing the new wide-body jetliner to market. Boeing missed the initial May 2008 delivery target and had repeatedly delayed its introduction because of problems in development.

The plane goes into service on Oct. 26 with a special charter flight from Narita International Airport to Hong Kong. ANA will begin using the 787 on regular domestic routes on Nov. 1.

The new jet is the first commercial airliner built using carbon fiber - a strong, lightweight, high-tech plastic - rather than the typical aluminum skin. It is quieter and uses about 20 percent less fuel than a comparably sized aluminum aircraft.

Airlines have ordered more than 800 of the planes that will compete with the Airbus A350.

I guess this is what innovation in the world of manned flight looks like these days. Very worthy but not very exciting. Where are those personal flyers George Jetson led me to believe I'd have when I grew up?

Just to have a commercial jet that doesn’t roar inside (at least not so loudly) from takeoff till landing is a notable achievement.

“Where are those personal flyers George Jetson led me to believe I’d have when I grew up?”

In an article on high-speed trains the author made the point that the government picks the winners (where the trains start and stop) and the losers (where they didn’t go.) Then the author said, “Who knows, we might have had George Jetson’s flying cars if it weren’t for the government subsidizing highways.” There were plenty of flying cars in the ‘50’s. My uncle built and flew/drove several. But once the lawyers attacked and destroyed the private aircraft industry, it was pretty much over for flying anythings.

Link to flying car.

Lawyers or no, a chief challenge would be to have a vehicle that can be maintained like a car, but perform like an airplane. Having to change the oil weekly and have mechanics go over the engine monthly would make it a burden that only the rich or those with lots of spare time could keep up with. It would have been nice to have had the capabilities of modern computerized car brains sixty years ago, then maybe the lawyers would have been more comfortable with reliability issues. Vacuum tubes can’t quite hack it.
