Report: Budget cuts would hollow military
Washington Times ^ | sept. 29, 2011 | Rowan Scarborough

A new congressional report spells out in detail how the military would become "hollow" if Congress´ supercommittee fails to agree on deficit reductions, triggering $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts.

The Army and Marine Corps would lose 200,000 troops, bringing active strength "well below" pre-Sept. 11, 2001, levels, and the armed forces would not be able to carry out its essential mission, says a 14-page analysis by the Republican majority staff of the House Armed Services Committee.

The report also says the cuts would deplete weapon systems, further degrading the fighting capabilities of the armed forces.

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has warned repeatedly in recent weeks of a weakened, or hollow, military if a congressional supercommittee fails to agree on deficit reductions by Nov. 23. By law, the stalemate would require across-the-board slashing at all federal agencies, including the Pentagon.

Please do check out the report — there are tables and graphs - even with current funding there are major reductions, and if the supercommittee fails, which it is bound to do, there are even deeper, draconian cuts in the military — one of the few things the Federal government should be responsible for and should be funding.

>> This was the plan all along... disarm the US.

A means to hold us hostage to the Leftists plan of catastrophic spending.

Glad McConnell and Boehner had the foresight to avoid this with that special, super-duper committee thingy.

The problem isn’t that it is just America doing that,it is every other Western nation as well that is saving a $ by cutting down on its armed forces.

The result isn’t that there is nobody left to pick up the slack but that the actual slack is far worse then anyone would expect.

The real disgusting thing is that everyone with half a brain understands that there are many, many other things that should be cut before our military. I’m sick to death of being held hostage by a government that blackmails us by threatening to cut things we know are vital. You and I may not agree on a candidate but I bet this is something neither of us think we should compromise.

If the committee fails....and massive cuts tear the military up, then I would imagine next November’s election to be fairly impressive with 55-60 Republican Senators walking in.

Yes, we all ask why Republicans signed onto this, well, it should also be asked of Democrats, though we all know their real answer, let them squirm at every town hall they hold from here till election day.

Remember, the Obama administration wants even more DRASTIC cuts than the super committee would be forced to do. Obama wants to cut the military by 2/3rds and plow the savings into social programs.

I’m not sure about the endless 6-year terms for Senators.

I agree with the comments on this thread. The goal has been to downsize our military, and the overspending has been executed in part (open to debate how much, but no small amount IMO) to seemingly leave no option but to cut it.

If you want to gauge the sanity of calls for cuts in the military by another marker, notice there aren’t any calls to cut the hundreds of billions we still pay out in welfare. Why not? We’re supposedly in serious trouble and have to cut. Aha, not so much after all huh.

Here’s something else to consider. Obama has determined we need a division or larger military contingent on U.S. soil, focused domestically, not outside our borders. Anyone think that effort will be cut down because of a shortage of funds? LOL, not a prayer...

Anything having to do with a strong United States, cut it. Anything having to do with buying off sectors of the public, not a chance. Anything to be considered a threat to the public, let it grow, no problem, it’s a necessity.
