Matt Lewis says he’s improving on this issue. I guess, but that’s mainly because after you’ve tried to win over voters by calling them heartless, there’s really nowhere to go but up. A scene from New Hampshire this morning:
“We have, for decades, had a federal government that has absolutely failed in its constitutional duty to defend our border,” Perry said.
“I’m a governor. I don’t have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing. I have to deal with these issues,” he later added.
Perry continued, “In 2001, we had this choice: Are we going to kick these children over to the curb and say you cannot have access to college? Because the fact of the matter is there’s no way they could pay the out-of-state tuition. And are we going to have them on the government dole over here because they’re not educated? Or are we going to have them in our institutions of higher learning, paying in state tuition, pursuing citizenship?”…
David Connors, the man who asked Perry the in-state tuition question, said he was satisfied with the governor’s answer.
Really? There are no jobs for illegals anywhere in Texas to earn tuition money? I was under the impression that there are quite a lot of jobs available to them, especially since Perry opposes e-Verify. This is the same sleight of hand he tried to use in the debate answer that got him in trouble, equating illegals’ opportunity to go to school in Texas with some sort of moral imperative among taxpayers to subsidize their education. (His wife, campaigning for him in Iowa, framed the choice as between tuition subsidies or welfare.) Somehow, the impoverished U.S. citizen from Mississippi is expected to pay his own way in Austin but the illegal who’s lived in Texas for three years gets a stipend from the locals. And not just in terms of lower tuition rates; apparently they qualify for financial aid too. It must be awfully confusing for Perry, as a “Texas Gaullist” and vocal champion of state sovereignty, to find that prioritizing state residency over national citizenship doesn’t play well with grassroots conservatives outside of Texas itself, but he’d better find clarity soon.
Here’s Romney’s new ad bludgeoning Perry with praise he once received from former Mexican President Vicente Fox. After you watch, read this amusing scolding (which notes some of Mitt’s own immigration heresies) from former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, who seems genuinely surprised that Romney would pander so shamelessly on a divisive issue simply to destroy an opponent. That was the old, soulless Romney. The new, soulful Romney should be above that sort of thing. Right?
Being a Texas resident and voter, why is it that no one ever heard of this In-State Tuition for children of illegals until the debate coyotes looking to curry favor with Romney, brought it up to smear Perry? This Bill 1403 was not widely known because it was and is a very minor issue among many greater issues in Texas.
The Bill was passed in 2001 by a then dem majority legislature, by an overwhelming veto proof majority. The dems saw this minor issue as a way to enlist a new voting block, Hispanics, into their group. The dems and Texas GOP knew that Texas had become almost equal in voter strength between dem and GOP (following 100 years of solid dem rule), but neither had a clear majority of the voters to get or retain rule. The Hispanic vote gave whichever side that majority, if they could convince them to side with them.
In 2001 the dems saw an opportunity to befriend the new Hispanic voter and possible have them for life, like they have Texas blacks. Enter the In-State Tuition for illegal’s children, an minor but possibly wedge issue to collect those Hispanic voters. Texas GOP legislature’s saw this and seeing it as a relatively minor issue said “We too”, to not have it a clear cut Dem vs GOP issue and to salvage some goodwill in the Hispanic voter community. Perry being caught without any power over this legislation, also saw the advantage of dulling the dem’s effort to endear the Hispanic’s and did not do the veto it “out of principle” (as some freepers scream illogically).
To some degree it worked for the GOP. When Perry ran for re-election he was able to get enough Hispanic votes to overcome the dem/blacks voter block. We would have had back to back Dem Governors had the Hispanics lockstepped with the dems, but enough had the good sense not to.
Unlike Governor’s in other States, the Texas Governor is unable to ignore the Hispanic vote.
As the Governor of Texas, Perry is Constitutionally obligated and responsible to administer all the laws, not like nobama who picks and chooses (immigration and Border Protection for instance).
Perry’s adherence to his “Texas Constitutional” responsibilities, goes well to show he would likely not act as nobama and would enforce the US immigration laws and protect our borders and as a Border State Governor would recognize the true gravity of the issue unlike someone from Mass. or Minn. or “never before elected, thus no record” candidates.
Here at FR we demand adherence to the Constitution and rightly so. Some on FR want to pick and choose which parts of the Constitution they want because of their own self-interest.
America is not a pure democracy, where the majority has absolute rule. We are a Representative Republic setup by the Fore Fathers to offer some protection to a minority from the absolute rule by a majority. Some on FR either don’t remember that or just prefer to ignore it.
In Texas, Perry as Governor, recognized that “total” Constitutional responsibility and does his best to be the Governor of TEXAS, not just white conservative Texas. Is that not what we should also want from a President?
Things are never as clear-cut or as simple as some pretend. I suggest the supporters of “other” candidates stop and think before smearing just to promote their favorite, it does America no good.

For me it's a dumb policy which I opposed in CA. That said, I don't see a governor opposing a policy that enjoys such overwhelming support of the legislature.
I actually like that he's not running away from it for political expediency. Even this piece is suggesting Perry should lie about his views to save his candidacy. How is that even a thought?
On balance with his total record, this isn't a deal killer. His debate performances and difficulty selling his message, however, seriously question his commitment or ability to win.
I see Romney out there using this as an issue when he proposed something worse: tuition waivers for the top 25% of high school grads. The legislature countered with in-state tuition, because they said top 25% would've benefitted the wealthy most.
The way he's attacking Perry on this, like he attacked others in 2007, could hurt Romney in the general.
Some candidates don't even have immigration records to defend. That's ok, they're saying the right things. *wink, wink*

Your lamebrain example sure does not seem applicable to In-State Tuition for children of illegals.
Your example probably would also fit every immigrant group ever to come to America.
Your example did occur back when the Mexican illegal migrant workers were not bringing their families along, but now most live in individual homes and remarkedly OWN a lot of those homes.
Whose responsibility for the illegals being allowed to enter and stay? Perry? NO, its the US Government.
Our two girls are now full grown, and our youngest is a TA(1). Since getting her B.S.Ed and passing all the IL Certification Teacher Tests (can teach K-9), she's worked for two districts near our and her place. Both are way above average in all grade test scores and also have very high overall ratings.
I also checked 'greatschools' for the Elem School our two grandkids are going to. That school is also above average in all areas. And a big plus is, they're Patriotic. When our grandson 'graduated' from Kindergarten the kids sang God Bless The USA (honest), American Flags were everywhere in the Gym, and the Teacher talked about her sons who were serving in Afghanistan for 'Our Country' (no commie NEA union junk in that school). And all this is in a Public School!
But I digress ;-), the greatschools website was a gem to find. Besides the School info, it tells you about the makeup of the entire community.
(1) B.S.Ed from ISU (IL State) and now taking an accelerated Masters level course for ESL and Aced (4.0 gpa) this past quarter. ESL will soon be a Requirement for all IL teachers. This is one more reason why I 'go off' on Illegals and their 'right' to an education at our expense. This ESL Course is $6,000!.. and that's with a 50% discount for her. The one good thing is all these ESL credit hours count towards her Masters Degree when she goes for that. But a teacher who already has a Masters is s.o.l., it's $6K down the drain for them. Just so they're able to teach illegals.

In 2001 republicans controlled the state senate 16-15 and democrats held a slim lead in the house 78-72. This bill could not have been passed without republican support and Perry should have opposed it instead of embracing it.

Whether or not *I* like a particular state’s law is totally irrelevant. If a law is not unconstitutional, it’s up to the people who live in the state through their elected state legislators. If the people don’t like the law, they can vote those legislators out of office and repeal the distasteful law. In the case at hand, TX has had ten long years to undo that law, but hasn’t. Why self-declared conservatives don’t support that notion is beyond me.

Something told me from the very first time I heard him speak that he was trouble but I ignored that still small voice to my own and nearly the country's detriment.
I think we may have dodged a bullet.
That does not take anything away from what I said about the dems trying to add the Hispanics to their vote block and the GOP being relatively successful to prevent that from occuring.
Address the rest, don’t just again pick one tiny detail.
