This is insane. You would have the SAME situation in Mexico that we face in Afghanistan. You would NEVER be able to turn your back on a Mexicn soldier without wondering if a bullet was aimed at your back. Rick Perry has just lost another ten points for me...not that he had that many in the first place. This shows an astounding lack of judgement.

This question popped into my mind: Does Perry have a political death wish? No doubt Romney is very happy with this latest episode. (Disclosure: I would really hate to see Romney as the eventual nominee. I hope Cain will beat Romney.)

In fact, there are some aspects that are potentially worse. Afghanistan does not have 50 million people (legal and illegal) living here. For one thing, this makes any expansion of the US military in Mexico politically difficult. Can you imagine unmanned aircraft hitting human targets in Mexico? I don't think Perry would go that far except in extreme circumstances, but imagine a voter trying to decide between Perry and Romney, and then hearing this.

But also, if the "collateral damage" included members of their families, that could make "home grown terrorism" and alliances with anti-US Islamic factions more of a threat.

If Mexico collapses, as it very well could, military intervention to secure the border could easily necessitate cross border operations. The alternative is to leave a lawless sanctuary, much like the Pashtun lands of Waziristan, only this time on our own border instead of Afghanistan's.

One would hope we would have the leadership necessary to do what has to be done when the time comes.

Exactly. Just one more reason to build a fence and secure the border. Mexico has been slowly invading us for years, without needing to use any violence.

If we actually close the border, they may, through their drug cartel proxies, try to escalate the invasion. But either way, we just need to secure and defend our borders.

Wants more american blood spilled in Mexico. Another reason to not vote for him....Invading a neighbor is not my idea of a smart leader...Military on OUR side of the border makes sense. Thats not what he suggested...
