Cain: Perry camp sign 'just plain insensitive' (Cain pulls the race card)
MSNBC ^

Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain criticized the name of a hunting camp once leased by Gov. Rick Perry's family as "just plain insensitive" in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain criticized the name of a hunting camp once leased by Gov. Rick Perry's family as "just plain insensitive" in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. The name of the camp — "Niggerhead" — was first reported by the Washington Post on Saturday. The paper said the name was painted on a rock at the entrance of the property. Perry reportedly began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at the secluded ranch early in his career. The offensive phrase has been painted over, but the Post's sources and the Perry campaign differ on when that was done. The Post reports that the name can still be seen through the paint. "My reaction is, that's just very insensitive," Cain told Fox. "[There] isn't a more vile, negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, before I hear that they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."

Much like the responses right here on FR - speaking off the cuff.

... yeah and we know how well that works out. You can always tell those FReepers that post just based on the headline. Sometimes it takes 20 posts or so before someone who has actually read the article provides a grown-up response. Always best to not comment until you have the facts and risk inserting your foot in your mouth.

"Since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place," he told ABC's "This Week." "Yes, it was painted over," he said. "But how long ago was it painted over? So I'm still saying that it is a sign of insensitivity."

Perry told the Post that the word on the rock is an "offensive name that has no place in the modern world." "My mother and father went to the lease and painted the rock in either 1983 or 1984," Perry told the newspaper in a written response to questions. "This occurred after I paid a visit to the property with a friend and saw the rock with the offensive word. After my visit I called my folks and mentioned it to them, and they painted it over during their next visit."

Perry added: "Ever since, any time I ever saw the rock it was painted over."

The worst you could says is that to a small degree Cain “took the bait” at first, but didn’t go beyond the initial comment.

A nothing burger to anyone intellectually honest about the situation, and I say that as someone who likes both Cain AND Perry.

We are beginning to see the Bachmannization of Mr. Cain by Perry supporters. A race card can only be played when racism exists. If the sign really existed, Mr. Perry has a problem.

"and renaming the place.”"

It's not his land to rename. It's a damn deer lease. You just lost me Cain.

Although Rick Perry is my Governor, I’m keeping my powder dry for Palin.

That said, this story sounds like a manufactured attack against Perry, and it appears that Herman Cain responded before letting all the facts come out.

Whoever started this must be sitting back with a rather large smile on their face. It’s despicable.

Perry's father painted over the sign and turned the rock upside-down back in the early 1980s.

In the early 1980s Rick Perry was in his early 30s and the word was as offensive then as it is now.

What more should Perry have done?

Painted over the sign and turned the rock upside down before he reached early middle age are two suggestions that come to mind.

Cain dropped the ball here.

I disagree. There's no point telling 1 out of every 8 Americans that they shouldn't find a racial slur offensive - and it's not only black people who find such words offensive. I was around in the early '80s, and the word, then as now, was not OK.

That said, in the early 1980s Perry was a Democrat in the Texas legislature and it's no surprise that the media never bothered to raise this issue back then.

I was just beginning like to Cain. This stunt will not persuade me to like him more.

As for the hunting camp name — I don’t know how this possibly escaped the rabid dog democrats of Travis county all these years. I guess if you go digging deep in someone’s past you are bound to find some embarrassing things. Now, why won’t the press starting looking for those things in the President’s past? Answer: they don’t want to find anything.

Thanks hocndoc.

Took a few lines to find out that Perry’s Dad painted over the name and turned the rock over years ago and it was there when they took the lease. Doesn’t sound very insensitive to me. Sounds like they thought it was wrong and attempted to do the right thing.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/rick-perry-familys-hunting-camp-still-known-to-many-by-old-racially-charged-name/2011/10/01/gIQAOhY5DL_story_4.html

I’m not a huge Perry fan but Cain has stepped up to the plate that made me leery of him. He still has a race chip on his shoulders. Too bad, I might have supported him. Not now though. I was suspicious when he announced in his camp meeting preacher style and then then changed it as time went by.

He could have said something else in response and left it neutral. Something like: “Are you sure? I really can’t believe Rick would do something like that.” Same effect but neutral. Shame the action not the person without knowing the facts.

We don’t need another racist in the White House. We need an American. Cain isn’t the man.

"I really don't like the fact that Cain is exclusively gunning for Perry. "

Me, either...

See this thread where Cain says, "Today, I could not support Rick Perry as the nominee."

I don't like that crap, either.

Cain is spot on. If Perry let this name exist at all, it’s a problem.

Herman Sharpton plays the race card against a Republican. Great. What’s next, will he play race hustler with his very own show on MSNBC? How disgusting, I’m so disappointed in Cain.

Perry didn’t let this name exist (at least on the rock).

Have you actually read anything on this? When Perry’s dad initially got on the lease, he painted over it and turned the rock over.

What should he have done? Taken a sledge hammer to the rock; broken it into tiny pieces; then ground those into dust; then thrown them into the sea?

What would YOU have done?

You know, if you don’t like Perry just say so.
