Michael Steele on Perry’s Hunting Camp: “It’s Very Troubling”
TIME ^ | 10/3/11

Posted on 10/03/2011 12:00:27 PM PDT by roses of sharon

Even as Texas Governor Rick Perry downplays the story of a racist epithet painted on a rock outside a property that he co-leased, black Republicans are not giving him the benefit of the doubt. First came GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, who said yesterday that Perry handled the episode in a “very insensitive” way.

And in an interview with TIME on Monday morning, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele also scolded Perry. “It’s very troubling on some many levels, for so many reasons,” Steele said. Steele said questions over when and how clearly the rock had been painted over miss the point:

So I’m going to lease lease a property.....Do you paint over the rock? Or do you just remove the damn thing altogether? So, I’m sorry–my attitude is just remove the rock. That is the ultimate statement for me. Just get rid of the rock. Unless the thing is a damn boulder.

Steele stopped short, however, of impugning Perry personally. “I am not ascribing anything to anyone’s motives or decisions,” he said. He added, however, that he agrees with Cain’s criticism: “I think Herman Cain was right. It does lead one to feel that there was a level of insensitivity about how this would be perceived by the larger community. I’m not just talking about black folks, I’m talking about all folks. You would think that even in the 1980s that there would still be some sense of, ‘Do we really want this on our property? Even though we’re leasing it, still, do you really want that there? And just painting over it?”

At that, Steele, who believes the Republican Party needs to make amends with black voters for its “Southern Strategy,” simply sighed with exasperation.

Steele said questions over when and how clearly the rock had been painted over miss the point:

The point is why are you giving the story more legs than it deserves?

Dumbles throw the bone into the pack and all the pubbies RUSH to fight over it while they sit back and giggle at your stupidity.

It was years ago...who gives a crap?

Well there’s no excuse for Cain and Steele to pile on any more.

Steele is their pet “conservative”, along with the cross-eyed guy.

The story has always been that it was leased property. You obviously choose to ignore that fact.

It seems the Republican party has an never ending list of fools.

This has gone on too long, the Right needs some strong leaders to pave the way for others.

But where are they?

Leased. Not purchased. The story from the Perry camp has not changed.

It's a deer lease!!!! The only connection he has to the land is the rented right to hunt on it!

You're right - my mistake. I forgot all about the endangered beetle.

And then there's the issue of lead in the paint. Chances cannot be taken. The rock was probably originally painted BEFORE the EPA banned lead paint. The entire area must be treated as if it has been contaminated by large amounts of lead. A complete containment structure will need to be built around the rock, and ALL traces of paint removed from it using environmentally neutral methods.

One hundred percent recapture of all pf the paint removed will be required, with strict record-keeping and chains of custody maintained. Permits will be needed in order to transport the potentially toxic waste-paint over the highways to a hazardous waste landfill where a separate permit will be required to dispose of the materials.

Finally, extensive study of the endangered beetle will need to be performed to ensure that long-term exposure to the potential lead in the paint has not had any long-term detrimental health benefits on the poor defenseless insect.

It will be YEARS before anyone will be allowed to move that rock.

It was a hunting lease. lease/lÄ“s/Verb: Grant (property) on lease; let. Noun: A contract by which one party conveys land, property, services, etc., to another for a specified time, usually in return for a periodic payment. Kind of like renting land. It’s yours to hunt on for a fee. How big does a rock have to be to write 10 letters on it that you can see from your truck?

It wasn’t his property? I thought his father bought it. Is the story changing now?

It was a hunting lease. If you don't know, a hunting lease isn't a full lease. You only pay for rights to hunt the property, sometimes only for certian times of the year. The property is still used by the owner, and you are expected to leave everything as is. Technically the Perrys didn't even have the right to paint the rock or turn it over. I suppose now someone will criticize them for not respecting private property rights.

Has anybody seen a picture of this rock? Is there still a racial epithet written on this rock? Anybody got a picture of a smiling Rick Perry in standing front of the rock?

Lest we forget...the name "Niggerhead" was borne by in excess of 100 separate geographic features in the U.S at one time. There is a brackish lake in Southeast Texas on the upper reaches of Trinity Bay called "Niggerhead Lake." Said feature started to appear on maps in the early 1970s as "Negrohead Lake," which is obviously a much more palatable (not to mention culturally sensitive) name than "Niggerhead Lake."

Maybe Rick Perry used to water ski there. ;-)

Any use of the word "insensitive" is political correctness.

The word "inappropriate" is another word straight from the PC playbook. I'm about as tired of hearing that word from leftists (and a few on our side) as I am of the phrase, "...at the end of the day."

Yeah, after all it’s not like Barry went to a ‘hate whitey’ church or said white police officers acted stupidly - after all, that would be insensitive and for sure we would hear Cain speak out about that with his claims of ‘we the people’! Gag me! Obviously, he believes only blacks are allowed to be offended. What’s in his heart came out the mouth.

Suppose you are a Professional Politician...

And someone offers to lease you some land...

And the name of this land is called “Niggerhead”...

Shouldn’t some kinda ALARM BELL have gone off in Rick Perry’s mind? As in, “No thanks, I’ll look for land elsewhere.”

Just sayin’

You forget, Perry was a Democrat back then. Democrats never have to worry about being accused of racism.

I left a sarcastic reply to your post on the other thread but let me answer you seriously on this one. You ask if this should have caused an alarm bell to go off in his head. The simple answer is no. If I am wanting to hunt deer on a piece of land, I get the lease and low and behold, there is a rock with a bad word on it on the land. Would this stop me from doing the lease and hunting on the land? No. That’s just silly. To be perfectly honest with you, I probably wouldn’t have even done as much as they did when they painted and moved it.

Some sites like Dailymail UK start their article with Cain’s words— land owned by the Perrys and only towards the bottom of the article do they let people know it was LEASED.

I checked and it appears the Dailymail has changed that article. I will check and see if I have the old misleading one. The press are dishonest and underhanded.
