LONDON (AP) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is appealing for other donors to join Britain in a multi-million dollar campaign to wipe out guinea worm, a crippling and painful parasitic disease that now exists only in four African countries.

At a press briefing in London on Wednesday, British officials are expected to pledge 20 million pounds (US$31 million) over four years to the cause - but only if other donors also open their wallets.

The global campaign to eradicate guinea worm started in 1980, when there were about 3.5 million cases of the disease, also known as dracunculiasis, every year across Africa and Asia.

Since then, cases have dropped by more than 99 percent, but the disease remains a problem in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Mali and Chad. Last year, there were 1,797 cases.

killing these worms

just a second please....I'm trying to get a number for PETA...I'm certain that they would have something to say about eradicating an entire species!!!

Right. Why don’t they get rid of all the terrorists, dictators and murdering islamics, slavers and sex mutilators and then think about a way to help the people against a worm.
Otherwise I see the money as going to the dictators and islamics, as usual.

South Sudan appears to have the lion’s share of the cases, according to Wikipedia.

I’m confused.

On the one hand, leftists seem happy to see millions of Africans die in various ways. On the other, they seem intent on saving a few.

Only four countries!!!! The poor worm is an endangered species. PETA and the EPA will soon demand protected status and some UN idiots will form the UNHCCFTPOFTGW (unhikftpoftugwee) which will be confused for a county in Wales. In a decade the Welsh will all be wearing blue helmets and erecting Habitat for Guinea Worms affordable housing with Jimmuh making PSAs seen at 2 AM by ensomniacs!
Afterthought: can we spread some of the little crawlers around the Occupy Wherever skanks?
