Obama homebrew gets competitor

But even so, has any modern president done more for beer? Obama recently enjoyed a beer al fresco at the White House with Dakota Meyer, recipient of the Medal of Honor. His 2009 Rose Garden Beer Summit was a bona fide media event, and in May he stopped in for a widely-photographed pint of Guinness in his ancestral home of Moneygall, Ireland.

The Obama Foodorama blog notes the 44th president is also the first to brew his own beer since George Washington. White House Honey Ale was served to Meyer, and to guests at this year's Super Bowl party.

Visiting Pennsylvania during the 2008 campaign, Obama sampled a Yuengling while watching college basketball at a sports bar. Apparently, despite the fancy homebrew, he is something of a reverse beer snob.

“Trying a Pennsylvania beer, that’s what I’m talking about,” said Obama, his sleeves rolled up, smiling. “Is it expensive, though? ... Wanna make sure it’s not some designer beer or something.”

My attempt at home brewing was an Irish Stout. VERY heady. And an exceptional laxative.

I doubt Obama actually brews White House beer. I also doubt it was his idea, probably came along with the White House chef.

Julie, does Barack have a drinking problem?

I look forward to the photo of Obama enjoying a drink of cow urine (straight from the tap, of course) in his ancestral home of Kenya.

Been there, my friend. I used to have a problem waiting for a batch to age and settle out. With the price of tp being what it is, I’ve learned to chill out till it’s ready. “No beer before it’s time.”

When I poured that glass it had been bottled for about two weeks. It was drinkable but I think it needed another two weeks to mellow out. That will be around Friday of next week.

Yes there are 26 bottles at 24 oz each still conditioning. Having a hard time waiting to open another one until next week. But I will wait.

Have it cold ! :)

Also, in my experience with kits, your second batch will be about 5 or so times better than the first batch. However, your third, fourth and x more batches will only be very slightly better than your second batch. That's because you will likely have got the hang of it by then.

If/When you do all-grains, then you really start fiddling with the finer points of beer taste. All-grains are much more complex in flavor and IMO, more complicated to make.

IMO, both kits and all-grains are far superior in flavor to anything you can buy at a grocery, gas station or beer store and are almost always, MUCH LOWER COST to make.

Oh, it was very cold! I am brewing kits from Midwest Homebrewing Supplies now. My second batch is a Liberty Cream Ale. These kits come with grains that need steeping and hops that have to be added in two stages (bitering and aroma) plus the base Malt extract and extra corn sugars or Belgian Candi when needed. And I am using Wyeasts now.

First, he’s not actually making the beer; likely some associate WH chief. Second, if he did I suspect he’d mess that up somehow.

In other news, I have a nice DobbleBock in secondary right now....
