But when you expand the argument (as Santorum did) and say that you are giving tuition brakes to illegal aliens that you are denying to your fellow American citizens from other states... that’s a losing issue, because your basically insulting everyone else in the nation.

Yep Perry blew that response badly.

He should have poitned out to Santorum that in fact the Texas legislature made it so that an out of state student could get instate tuition in only one year rather than three. All they have to do is move to Texas set up residency for one year, apply, get accepted in a college and they get instate tuition as a Texas resident.

well.. that's certainly a better response than what he gave (and in fact, it's information I didn't even know)

but ... I think it's just too complicated to try and explain. Face it, most people are about as smart as a doorknob, you have to keep it simple.

And right now the issue is being framed very simply against Perry, even the average scooter fat moron zipping around walmart can grasp that Perry wants to give illegal aliens instate tuition that he wont give them (if they don't live in Texas)

When your forced to respond with a essay to a one sentence attack, you lose in a debate. It's not fair, but it's just the way it is. The debate format doesn't lend itself to nuanced explanations, and neither does the intellect of the average American.

I suspect most other states have the same requirement for state residency but I don’t know that.

Perry is okay in a setting where he is giving a speech or doing questions from the audience. But in debates he isn’t that capable.

Perry blew the chance to put that issue to rest and turn it back on Santorum but he failed so he’ll have to live with it.

Regardless, tonight is Perry's last chance with me. If he doesn't get it together and at least do decent i’m done with him.

He doesn't even have to win, he just has to not kill himself like he did in that last debate. If I see some improvement, heck ANY improvement, I'll feel better. But if the trend of him actually getting worse continues this time, I have to switch to someone else. And since Mitt is completely unacceptable, that would mean either Cain or Gingrich.

Pure BS...we're a family of Aggies and are smart enough to know what took place. Rick Perry became governor in late December of 2000, this legislation hit his desk in April 2001. It was veto proof legislation.

We also agree with Rick Perry and Texas stance on in state tuition. IF you have NO laws on the books, illegals go to colleges throughout the USA falling under the identical requirements of Legal American Students, there are 38 states that have NO law. Republicans in Texas wanted to control that...the law in Texas for in state tuition is one of the toughest laws in the USA with a few exceptions.

You people need to get real...while we argue over in state tuition this country is going off the cliff. There is only one man running that has a record to prevent this. Texas is already out the recession...which is barry's depression throughout the rest of the country. Wise UP!!!

[You might go back through Rush's information he has provided on hispanics. In short if Republicans want to win elections you can't lose the Hispanic vote.]

But it also looks like he is a true believer of an open border policy

Interviewing Rick Perry On Illegal Immigration

Because the federal government has failed to secure the border, states have had to act. In Texas we have sent Texas Rangers to the border, spent hundreds of millions to fight border crime, outlawed driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants and passed Voter ID.

...

I called for abolishing sanctuary cities in my last State of the State address, and made it an emergency item for the Legislature. I’m a firm believer in giving law enforcement the discretion they need to do their job. Sanctuary city policies handcuff law enforcement officers in order to further a political agenda.

...

I signed that bill because getting a driver’s license is a privilege, not a right. It just doesn’t make sense to me to extend that privilege to individuals who are here illegally.

Additionally, I vetoed a bill that would have allowed the use of a matricula consular, which is an ID card used by the Mexican government, to get a driver’s license in Texas.

...

I support the right of each state to come up with its own plan to address the federal government’s failure on border security and illegal immigration.

The federal government has failed to secure the border, and states are left fending for themselves. States have every right under the 10th Amendment to pass laws and make decisions for themselves.

...

We’ve spent about $400 million of our state tax dollars to put more boots on the ground, more helicopters in the sky and better intelligence in the hands of law enforcement.

And we’ve seen real results. Our surge in manpower has created major disruptions for the drug cartels and human smuggling rings. We’ve seized millions of pounds of drugs, taken 3,500 illegal weapons off the street and made America safer.

Is the Bryan Eagle a liberal rag piling on? Help me out here, Aggies.

One poster said that the wetb@ck tuition was the only reason for his decline. I digress. His debate performance must be added to that. Pitiful.

In any event Aggies should be more concerned about their entrance to the SEC where they will get beat like a drum and supplant Vanderbilt as the conference’s laughing stock.

“I called for abolishing sanctuary cities in my last State of the State address, and made it an emergency item for the Legislature. I don’t know if Ricardo was already considering running for president when he made his last State of the State address or not. But I remember a lot of posts by a lot of Texas Freepers regarding Perry’s weak stance on immigration in the last Texas gubernatorial contest.

How long has he been fighting tooth and nail against sanctuary cities in Texas?

...

“I signed that bill because getting a driver’s license is a privilege, not a right. It just doesn’t make sense to me to extend that privilege to individuals who are here illegally.”

Glad Ricardo signed it. Do you know whether he twisted elbows and worked to see that the bill was enacted so that it would come to his desk?

“Additionally, I vetoed a bill that would have allowed the use of a matricula consular, which is an ID card used by the Mexican government, to get a driver’s license in Texas.”

I give Ricardo kudos for this.

...

“I support the right of each state to come up with its own plan to address the federal government’s failure on border security and illegal immigration.”

The problem with that, Ricardo, is that when a state like Arizona or Alabama tries to do that, some governors of other states undercut them with public statements. Perhaps those governors think the other state legislators and governors don’t “have a heart”.

“The federal government has failed to secure the border, and states are left fending for themselves. States have every right under the 10th Amendment to pass laws and make decisions for themselves.”

I agree. Good statement.

...

“We’ve spent about $400 million of our state tax dollars to put more boots on the ground, more helicopters in the sky and better intelligence in the hands of law enforcement.

“And we’ve seen real results. Our surge in manpower has created major disruptions for the drug cartels and human smuggling rings. We’ve seized millions of pounds of drugs, taken 3,500 illegal weapons off the street and made America safer.”

Good work. But what has the surge in manpower done about those who are criminals because they have invaded our country illegally, even if they aren’t part of a drug cartel or smuggling ring?

Some of these folks are no better than Obama. Instead of targeting Romney out of the primaries so we could focus solely on the conservatives in the party (and I’m speaking of other candidates who failed to target Romney)...vetting and choosing at our own pace, we basically divided and conquered our own...leaving Romney the way in. If any of these folks pay attention to the polls...we’re giving it to Romney. If this happens, I think it just might...I want these people to leave FR. They’re only a nuisance to the cause of conservatism.

The next president will chose 2 supreme court justices. Romney and Obama...as the choosers!? Geez, I hate these zealots! The sad thing is they parrot the media.

"The fact that he continues to defend his stance is troubling," said Justin Pulliam, a member of the Texas Aggie Conservatives. "He's not an all-around conservative candidate."

Ah the words of advise from a 20-year-old who probably immediately went to his Facebook page and told all his friends how cool it was he was interviewed by the news. He probably then went to the Dixie Chicken and ran up more charges on his Daddy's credit card!

I am a Aggie and I don't particularly like Rick Perry either. But using a college kids to slam Rick Perry is ridiculous. College kids think about (in order) sleeping, sex, eating, Facebook, partying and occasionally studying. They will say or do anything you want, whether they are a liberal or conservative.

BTW...College boy can look for an "all-around conservative" all he wants because he like the rest of us is going to get Mitt Romney shoved down his and our throats.

Love your tagline...it speaks volumes!

Too bad most people on FR will think it doesn't apply to them!

Should it be a deal-breaker if the alternative is Romney?

That’s the real question for conservatives.

I know Justin personally. He is an active Conservative in this community and was a key resource in sending Chet Edwards packing.

You are wrong.

So what! I know a dozen or more conservative college boys and girls too!

They are still college kids! I put ZERO credibility into what they have to say! When they grow up, get a job, buy a house, pay taxes and raise kids, then I will listen to what they say! Until then they are just a kid living through one of the easiest and best times of their life! They should enjoy the college experience, because the real world is a far different place

And I didn’t realize your friend was so powerful that he was one of the key resources that sent Chet Edwards packing. I am sure Bill Flores and all the other conservatives in District 17 couldn’t have defeated Edwards without such a powerful person!
