But when you expand the argument (as Santorum did) and say that you are giving tuition brakes to illegal aliens that you are denying to your fellow American citizens from other states... that’s a losing issue, because your basically insulting everyone else in the nation.
Yep Perry blew that response badly.
He should have poitned out to Santorum that in fact the Texas legislature made it so that an out of state student could get instate tuition in only one year rather than three. All they have to do is move to Texas set up residency for one year, apply, get accepted in a college and they get instate tuition as a Texas resident.
but ... I think it's just too complicated to try and explain. Face it, most people are about as smart as a doorknob, you have to keep it simple.
And right now the issue is being framed very simply against Perry, even the average scooter fat moron zipping around walmart can grasp that Perry wants to give illegal aliens instate tuition that he wont give them (if they don't live in Texas)
When your forced to respond with a essay to a one sentence attack, you lose in a debate. It's not fair, but it's just the way it is. The debate format doesn't lend itself to nuanced explanations, and neither does the intellect of the average American.
I suspect most other states have the same requirement for state residency but I don’t know that.
Perry is okay in a setting where he is giving a speech or doing questions from the audience. But in debates he isn’t that capable.
Perry blew the chance to put that issue to rest and turn it back on Santorum but he failed so he’ll have to live with it.
He doesn't even have to win, he just has to not kill himself like he did in that last debate. If I see some improvement, heck ANY improvement, I'll feel better. But if the trend of him actually getting worse continues this time, I have to switch to someone else. And since Mitt is completely unacceptable, that would mean either Cain or Gingrich.
We also agree with Rick Perry and Texas stance on in state tuition. IF you have NO laws on the books, illegals go to colleges throughout the USA falling under the identical requirements of Legal American Students, there are 38 states that have NO law. Republicans in Texas wanted to control that...the law in Texas for in state tuition is one of the toughest laws in the USA with a few exceptions.
You people need to get real...while we argue over in state tuition this country is going off the cliff. There is only one man running that has a record to prevent this. Texas is already out the recession...which is barry's depression throughout the rest of the country. Wise UP!!!

I don’t know if Ricardo was already considering running for president when he made his last State of the State address or not. But I remember a lot of posts by a lot of Texas Freepers regarding Perry’s weak stance on immigration in the last Texas gubernatorial contest.
How long has he been fighting tooth and nail against sanctuary cities in Texas?

The problem with that, Ricardo, is that when a state like Arizona or Alabama tries to do that, some governors of other states undercut them with public statements. Perhaps those governors think the other state legislators and governors don’t “have a heart”.

Good work. But what has the surge in manpower done about those who are criminals because they have invaded our country illegally, even if they aren’t part of a drug cartel or smuggling ring?
Some of these folks are no better than Obama. Instead of targeting Romney out of the primaries so we could focus solely on the conservatives in the party (and I’m speaking of other candidates who failed to target Romney)...vetting and choosing at our own pace, we basically divided and conquered our own...leaving Romney the way in. If any of these folks pay attention to the polls...we’re giving it to Romney. If this happens, I think it just might...I want these people to leave FR. They’re only a nuisance to the cause of conservatism.
The next president will chose 2 supreme court justices. Romney and Obama...as the choosers!? Geez, I hate these zealots! The sad thing is they parrot the media.

They are still college kids! I put ZERO credibility into what they have to say! When they grow up, get a job, buy a house, pay taxes and raise kids, then I will listen to what they say! Until then they are just a kid living through one of the easiest and best times of their life! They should enjoy the college experience, because the real world is a far different place
And I didn’t realize your friend was so powerful that he was one of the key resources that sent Chet Edwards packing. I am sure Bill Flores and all the other conservatives in District 17 couldn’t have defeated Edwards without such a powerful person!
