Do Cain's opponents believe that he's a legit threat?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 10/11/11 | Jay Bookman

Posted on 10/11/2011 10:15:03 AM PDT by DRey

One of the things to watch for in tonight’s GOP debate is how Herman Cain is treated by his fellow candidates. Is he perceived as a threat? Do they take his chances seriously?

snip

Based on history, that kind of performance ought to make Cain a target in the debate, because that’s what happens to top-tier candidates. When Rick Perry entered the race and seemed a real threat, Romney wasted no time attacking him, with Michele Bachmann gleefully joining in. Perry hasn’t been the same since.

snip

So if Romney, Perry and Bachmann do perceive Cain as a legitimate threat to win the nomination, they’ll begin to question him and his policies directly. Call it a sign of respect. Maybe they’ll ask him why, in 2008, he strongly backed the TARP bailout and treated opponents with such condescension, attacking them as “free market purists (who) want you to believe that this is the end of capitalism as we know it.” Maybe they’ll press him on why he dismissed an audit of the Federal Reserve, saying those who thought an audit necessary just didn’t know enough about the Fed. (They also ought to challenge him on the fact that his “9-9-9 plan would significantly raise taxes on the poor and middle class, but this being a Republican debate, that probably won’t happen.)

On the other hand, if they continue to treat Cain with kid gloves, preferring to direct their fire elsewhere, that will say a lot as well.

Post as if you were a danged grow-up and we have a deal. Since you appear to lack the ability, and you don’t care for how I post to you WHEN you clearly deserve it, I guess we are going to have to take a break for awhile.

Enjoy the debate tonight and I certainly hope that your chosen candidate performs as well as he has in the last three debates. It should make the race a bit more...clear.

Cheers.

“” If money was the main reason for winning, we.... “

Fools are born in but a moment. Perry has to mount a comeback and carpet bomb the entire field, expose them and let the chips fall where they may. Cain is supporting a socialist, Romney. It is crystal clear. Why would that be okay with FReepers? Cain is a facilitator for Romney and is smart enough to know how this is going down. Cain is telegraphing it. You also are a serving utilitarian to the end game. Socialism. Cain/Romney should be very thankful.”

So is the big ole scary whisper, smear campaign the Perry people been cookin’ up?

They shook hands at the debate, and Romney told the truth about Cain having a good resume, so that makes Cain a socialist conspirator?

Wow.

Just wow.

That’s all ya got?

Christie’s endorsement is already kind of running in place, given the ideological similarities of the two. I don’t see it pulling in anyone not already in Romney’s camp.

It will still be fun to see it forgotten in the dust should Sarah Palin and/or Donald Trump come out for Cain. Hey, he’s already got Dennis Miller onboard, and Miller has a large radio audience.

Perry has a TON of Republican support — just not in the northeast where the RINOS roam.

Iowa is not in the Northeast.

"Herman Cain has surged into the lead in Iowa, and Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann crashed, with three months still to go in the race for the first nominating contest. Cain has 30% to Mitt Romney’s 22%, Ron Paul’s 10%, Perry’s 9%, Newt Gingrich’s and Bachmann’s 8%, Rick Santorum’s 5%, and Jon Huntsman’s and Gary Johnson’s 1%."

Barring a Perry miracle, when he finally quits the race (note that this is not an attack on Perry, just anticipation of a continued trend) and either endorses Cain because he’s gone all in against Romney, or Romney because Cain hurt his feelings, how big will your head explode?

Santorum has already started his attack on Cain, but I’m not sure it will be effective. “I have a 0-0-0 plan” comes across as cheap satire. I’m not sure it was that effective for him.

Santorum can't win, but he can try and prevent others from winning as well. It all depends on who he decides to help.

Methinks the Northeast Rino contingent is skeeered.

I just saw Romeny and Christie, the only person they attacked was Perry. Like Rush says, liberals will always tell you who they are afraid of.

How “big” will my head explode? Err...not...very big? I’ve said all along if it’s a choice between Cain and Romney, I’m all in for Cain. That said, it’s never going to happen.

I think Perry will take Iowa. It’s certainly way to early to predict Iowa today.

Romney did more than “tell the truth” about Cain’s resume. He told a group in New Hampshire yesterday that they should vote for him or Cain. Not exactly the words of someone afraid of his nearest “competitor.” You can play blind if it makes you feel better. And hey, maybe PALIN will jump in after all! What Romney is doing, using Cain for division of the conservative vote, is exactly what McCain did with Huckabee. It’s why we got McCain. It’s why we’re going to get Romney...and four more years of Obama.

It’s really sad that Perry supporters have to constantly post Liberal propaganda as opposed to instructing us why their candidate is so much better than Cain.

Telling.

Interesting. "Said all along," eh? Of course, given your prolific recent posting history, I'm sure I've missed some, but in all the ones I've read, I've never seen you reference Cain as anything other than a Romney collaborator.

Sweetie, I’ve been posting why Perry is better than Cain for a week. What do you want to know? Perry has successfully run an ECONOMY. Perry has created more jobs in his economy than almost all the other states COMBINED. Cain has run a successful BUSINESS. He also served on the board of a company that perpetuated the exact same crime against its employees as ENRON (he left that one off his resume, but if he lasts much longer in the polls, you can bet it’ll be everywhere). That company’s name was Aquila, by the way. Perry has ALWAYS been pro life. Cain has waffled. Texas is a leader in energy production in the US. Perry has extensive experience working with the oil and gas and wind energy industries. One of his campaign pillars is making America energy independent. He knows how to do this. He will mine Sarah Palin for help in this, and he WILL get it done. Once we are energy independent, so many of our issues in foreign affairs will GO AWAY. Energy independence will also create a massive amount of jobs immediately. This is one part of Perry’s jobs plan. Herman Cain is a novice. He might have similar hopes, but has no experience and no plan to make it happen. Cain doesn’t have a jobs plan. He has a NEW TAX plan that hurts the middle class with its national sales tax (on top of state sales tax). His plan also creates a new entitlement system, or “empowerment zones.” I’ll stop at this, but let me know when you want to know another string of reasons why Perry is better for us than Cain. The list is long.

I see you haven’t followed my work. I know Cain is being used as a wedge to get Romney the nomination. This happenes every time. However, I am on record numerous times as saying that I will support Cain over Romney. That’s an easy call. I don’t think Cain is evil. I think he’s a good man. He’s wrong about some things, like Perry, but his lack of experience makes him severely inferior to Perry in my estimation. Cain has run a business successfully. Perry has grown an ECONOMY, and in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression. Perry also has support where it counts. He can beat Romney. Cain cannot. Perry can beat Obama. Romney and Cain cannot — that’s why the left is pushing for Romney so hard.

I know Cain is being used as a wedge to get Romney the nomination.

So this "good man" isn't in control of what he says and does. Please tell me who the puppet master is.

Perry also has support where it counts. He can beat Romney.

He's doing a bang-up job of it so far, isn't he?

Cain cannot.

Pay no attention to those polls behind the curtain.

Perry can beat Obama.

Yes, because so many people are eager to turn the country back over to another Texas governor.

Romney and Cain cannot

Well, you're half right. Of course, an increasing number of people think that a man who has the track record of saving businesses in trouble, with a degree in mathematics, has come from the back to the front of the pack like Secretariat, and can put sentences together without need of a teleprompter, just might be seen as a tad more competent by hurting Americans who've come to realize that Change is not a synonym of improvement.

Perry is now my 2nd choice behind Cain. I prefer Cain for 2 reasons over Perry. Perry Vs Obama debate petrifies me having seen Perry in last 3 debates. No. 2: I prefer a man with demonstrated success in business over life long politician.

But if Cain loses in primaries, I will have no problem with Perry.
