GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. — Local Amish men say they aren't budging when it comes to state law.

Four of the men appeared in a Graves County courtroom Monday for refusing to pay fines for not displaying a reflective triangle on their buggies.

State law requires slow-moving vehicles to display the bright orange-red symbol.

In August, eight men, including the four in court Monday, spent time in jail for refusing to pay the fines.

The men said they're refusing to pay because the triangle is in direct violation of their religious

I thought the last one's name was H----y, and he had starred in several feature films. Including some 'nature' films.

But I may be thinking about a different set of dwarves.

I do (have tailights) when they work, but have been known to walk escaped cows down the road back to a gate; and the cows do not have reflectors or lights installed.

I’m not Amish, but I respect them.

What is with the beards

They have beards when they get married. Can you tell who has been married the longest?

"...the young guys have been known to go out violating deer and send the buggys home sans driver."

What in the world does THAT mean??

Technically, for jewish men (who might be Levites), the requirement per the Torah, is found in Leviticus 19:27 "Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard."

It's in the Bible.

I wouldn’t argue with them about their interpretation of the Holy Scriptures, or their customs.

Romans 12:18 (KJV) If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

So, how come you English don’t have big red triangles on your bicycles? They go about the same speed as a horse and buggy and aren’t as easy to see.

I would think an oil lamp would be an acceptable compromise.

I know what that means in the world I come from.

I think poaching might have been a better word choice than violating (for english speakers), but I have Russian friends, so, you learn to understand.

See my post #51 for a probable explanation.

And it is heartening to know that the Amish are not the only folks on the north american landmass to send a horse to the stables when there is game (deer or dear) afoot, after dark.

We were all young once.

My bike came with a red reflector in back, yellow in front and both sides of both wheels. I also have a reflectorized vest and I don't ride in the public road. If the 16th century folks would do the same, I'd have no complaints. Their unwillingness to comply with Scriptural mandate is the problem.

I bought some raw milk from the Amish yesterday.

Most of it spilled on the way home.

Better luck next time.

Looks like they need to widen their gene pool, but I don’t think they will find anyone to help them.

Those are among the worst cases of hat head I’ve ever seen.

Allow me to introduce myself.

The hat is the first thing to go on and the last thing to come off. Goes on as soon as I'm vertical, comes off as I'm leaning toward horizontal.

I would normally agree with you but in this case those triangles are about the only thing a driver is going to see on a foggy morning. The Amish religion doesn’t require them to drive a buggy. They have the option of walking.
