Disney Channel Edits Out Gun From 1938 Mickey Mouse Cartoon
Ammoland ^ | 11 October, 2011 | Eric at the Gunmart Blog

United States --(Ammoland.com)- Almost every morning the Disney Channel runs shortened versions of their “golden oldies” between some of their modern day cartoons as a way to fill time until the next scheduled show begins.

One morning recently my kids were watching the Disney Channel when they featured an old Mickey Mouse classic called ‘Mickey’s Parrot‘ which was originally released back on September 09, 1938.

In this episode, a parrot belonging to an escaped killer wanders into Mickey’s basement. Mickey hears it talking and thinks that the parrot is the killer who is on the loose who he just heard about on the radio. Mickey then goes and grabs his double barreled shotgun off of the wall and prepares to defend himself.

Well, wouldn’t you know it… in the version they presented on the Disney Channel the other day, they had digitally removed the shotgun and replaced it with a broom. Yes, Mickey grabbed a broom off of the gun rack, shouldered it, and prepared to defend himself with his handy, dandy tactical… broom.

Really, Disney? Really? Do you think we have come to the point as a society that we can’t even allow guns to be seen by children for fear that it will cause them to become crazed, blood thirsty psychopaths? Do you really think guns are so evil that the mere sight of one will cause blood to run in the streets? Give me a break!

Disney cartoons from that era have featured firearms literally more times than I can count. They’ve depicted firearms in terms of being a legitimate means of self defense, as a means to take game animals, and they have shown firearms as the indispensable tool that they are for every cowboy and cowgirl of the old west. Several generations have now been brought up with Disney cartoons that have depicted firearms as an integral part of their plot, and now you are telling me that we as a society can no longer handle it?…

That our children must be completely isolated from the mere sight of a cartoon gun? Ridiculous!

No one outside of Disney can definitively say why they would choose this extremely misguided approach to self censorship, but I find it very disturbing. Did they choose to do this because they are anti-gun? Did they do it because they actually believe that kids seeing firearms would be detrimental? Perhaps they are just so afraid of the loony liberal soccer mom’s that might email them about it that they felt it was just the easiest path to take. I dont know the answer to the question of “why” they are doing this, but my response to them is the same no matter what… SHAME ON YOU, DISNEY! SHAME ON YOU!

If Disney is actually concerned about child safety with regards to firearms, then I would suggest they team up with the NRA and devote some significant airtime to letting Eddie Eagle educate children about what to do if they find a gun. Not allowing children to be exposed to even the sight of a gun is not the answer. In fact, that’s what gets kids killed.

The responsible thing to do is to talk to kids about guns. Tell them about the dangers, and educate them about how to be safe. Disney has a captive audience to say the least, and they should be doing everything they can to educate children (and parents) in our nation about gun safety. Disney should be doing their part to give children the knowledge that they need to keep them safe if they do ever happen to find a gun. Spreading the message of “Stop. Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.” is the path they should be taking. If Disney actually wants to make a difference when it comes to the safety of children, then they should be providing the millions of children that watch their network with useful information about firearms that will actually prevent accidents.

Disney sticking their heads in the sand and hoping that kids never see what a gun looks like is not the answer. Talking openly and honestly about gun safety is what will actually help children. How great would it be if an entire generation that is going to grow up watching the Disney Channel could be exposed to such valuable information about gun safety?

What Disney is currently doing is misguided and extremely dangerous. They are not helping to keep kids safe, and they are being extremely counterproductive towards preventing gun accidents in America.

Wow! Elmer Fudd isn’t going to be happy he no longer can use his double-barreled shotty to hunt “wabbits”...

I was about to say, if Warner Brothers goes this route, there will be hundreds of ‘Buggs Bunny’ cartoons that will just have to be erased from existence. Especially if you include the horrendous violence of the Road Runner cartoons.

hmmmm. Might be a good idea to get copies of those classic cartoons for the kids. The PC crowd is probably going to make them ‘friendly’ to our modern times....

Maybe it’s a good idea they did replace it with a broom. Mickey definitely wasn’t a responsible gun owner.

A lot of those Looney Tunes cartoons have the shots of Fudd blasting Daffy Duck edited out. They do a “reaction shot” of Bugs Bunny, then cut back to a smoking Daffy. It’s pretty lame.

Actually, they or the TV Stations who carry them have and I have seen as horrible an example of the genre as is possible. There is a classic Bugs, Daffy and Elmer with the theme of which hunting season it is, duck or rabbit. Obviously, the end results had Daffy having his beak spun around multiple times.

This particular showing of this cartoon had EVERY USE OF THE GUN completely excised but there was still the sound of a bang. So all that was shown was the denouement of it being "Duck Season" -> BANG -> and Daffy's head smoking and his bill spinning! A total non sequiter and completely ruined cartoon.

I am sure that some liberal / anti-gun nut was very proud of their 'contribution'.

Usually nobody catches them. Paramount has been editing scenes for years on their old shows and DVD’s. They give you a little disclaimer that takes a magnifying glass to read.

It isn’t about uncut versions. It’s the 1984 memory chute, removing anything that offends the P.C. religion from movies and films. This time they got caught.

How long has it been since the Biathlon was shown in the US ?

It’s still an Olympic sport. An exciting one, at that. But it won’t be shown on US television because it shows a firearm being used in a fun, athletic way.

And that sport is ridiculously tough.

Everything that liberals get their tentacles into becomes corrupted.

This is pathetic.

Actually, I've long wondered why the liberals who want to ban guns and violence don't start by eliminating them from their movies and TV shows.

(Of course, I wouldn't avocate removing guns from vintage cartoons and TV shows. I don't think anyone would suggest that the use of guns on TV today (judging by show promos during NFL games 'cause that's all I see) is in any way comparable to the way they were used on Gunsmoke e.g.)

Several years ago I made a tourist trip to London, UK and discovered to my horror that the Imperial War Museum is equally, or more, PC. They have an excellent collection of WWII small arms that they do not display to the general public. Instead, they reserve viewing of that collection only for certified academics and similar people. Being an educational institution, that makes them even worse than Disney. It also means we should all take our kids and grand kids to the NRA Museum, regularly take them to gun shows, and give all of them firearms training, including live fire, as soon as they're old enough to know what guns are and what they do.

Warner Bros did this years ago. Not the guns, but other things. Case in point:

Bugs/Elmer cartoon “The Rabbit Of Seville”

In one part, Elmer is in the barber chair and Bugs lathers him up with shaving cream. Next Bugs climbs on top of Elmer’s chest, pulls out Elmer’s necktie and a HUGE straight razor and strops the razor on the tie. Then you see Bugs slash back and forth on Elmer’s face as Elmer yells “Ow, oh, oh, ow.....” Then Bugs walks in front of Elmer with a mirror singing, “There, you’re nice and clean, although your face looks like it might have gone thru a ma-chine.”

In the edited version, Bugs lathers up Elmer’s face, then walks in front of him with the mirror.

I noticed this back in the 80’s.

BTW I have a copy of the unedited version.

Well, it was 1938, after all. Just think what might have happened if we'd had nothing more than brooms for American troops to train for fighting the Nazis and the Japanese.

Oh wait. We did.

Our troops had to drill with brooms at first because liberal Progressives like Woodrow Wilson and his idiotic League of Nations forced us to destroy weapons and bulldoze airplanes so that WWI would be the "War to End All Wars".

How'd that work out? Liberals never learn a damned thing. And once again they are eager to render us all defenseless in the service of their stupid, stupid ideology.
