Man who begs for money on New York streets revealed to be legendary comedian living in $3.5m home
UK Daily Mail ^

was once known as 'The World's Foremost Authority'.

Professor Irwin Corey, comedian, actor and left-wing political activist, strolls along Manhattan's East 35th Street pan-handling every day, seven days a week, for the last 17 years.

Of course professor Corey - who has enjoyed a long and illustrious career spanning Broadway, television, theatre and comedy clubs - does not need the money.

In fact he is not even homeless, despite his scruffy, scrawny appearance, but has an apartment in an affluent area of New York which he believes to be worth $3.5million.

His reasons for posing as a homeless down-and-outer and hassling drivers for change are two-fold: Since his wife of seventy years Fran died in May he said it helps beat the loneliness.

The 97-year-old also donates all the money he raises - sometimes up to $250 a day - to a charity that buys medical supplies for children in Cuba.

I liked him when he used to be funny.

But like all of Hollywierd when they get old and saggy they will do or say anything to get attention now.

I don’t agree with his methods exactly, but since when is having a charitable heart being a scumbag?

He's mis-representing himself when he begs as someone who needs the money directly. If he looked like hell, begged, and had a can which said "donating what I don't need to poor people in Cuba" I'd feel differently. If he's rich, let him contribute of his own substance rather than pretend that there's a personal charity transaction between him and the donor.

>>I’m shocked that he’s still alive.<<

Only because he doens’t have to depend on socialist medical care. A socialist system would’ve euthanized him years ago.

$250 a day panhandling ? What about the American homeless who could have used that bum money for food ?

I very rarely give to a bum on the street. Figure my automatic monthly donations to a couple of homeless shelters downtown help more. On the few times that I have given to them, it is usually a cold bottle of water and a granola bar or something.

Although I’m always worried they might trade or sell it for booze or drugs. And now I guess I have to worry they might send it to Cuba now too.

And if he’s lonely - he could spend time serving food, etc. at the nearest homeless shelter. I imagine it would be too much for him to invite some of them to his place for a bite to eat or get a hot shower. Perhaps if they were Cuban?

According to Michael Moore Cuba has the best health care in the world. Maybe he should panhandle Moore’s mansion. They both care so much.

Aeecpting a donation under false pretenses does it for me. Do the donors know he provides cover for murderous Cuban opressors?

But wait, I thought Michael Moore said that the Cuban healthcare system was the envy of the civilized world...

It’s taking money under false pretences. People give him this money in the expectation he will use it to buy booze, instead he gives it to charity.

When notorious recluse Thomas Pynchon won the 1974 National Book Award for Gravity's Rainbow, he dispatched Professor Irwin Corey to accept the award in his stead and deliver the acceptance speech. It's on the web.

I once may have found it funny but now I see it for the subversive 'in-joke' that it was. Corey is a Commie.

Is money collected that way not considered to be earned income and shouldn't all such income be reported to the IRS.
Donating part or all of it to a registered charity (if that is where it's really going) will reduce his tax liability payable, but it still must be reported, nicht wahr?

He’s just another liberal moonbat who would rather help kids in a commie country rather than in his own. Hypocrite.
