Protesters should go after Big Education
pioneer press ^ | 10-16-11 | Joe Soucheray:

With demands seemingly all over the map by various occupiers of various streets and/or government centers and/or college campuses, a recurring theme has been free education, as in college education should be free. Incidentally, the drums and hula hoops have started up in Durham, N.C., home of Duke University, which was created by the generosity of a tobacco corporation.

The Duke news came to me the other day from an acquaintance who informed me, "It's started, drums and hula hoops.'' I knew instantly what she meant and deduced that she watched, with, I hope, some irony, before resuming the rather expensive proposition of her own education.

A protester interviewed on camera in Minneapolis by a local filmmaker, Michael Wilson, told him she wanted free education. The conversation went something like the following, for I am paraphrasing:

"Like it is in Germany, I think,'' she said, meaning college education.

"How is it paid for in Germany?'' Wilson asked her.

"By the government,'' she said.

"How do they get the money?'' he asked.

"From the 1 percent?'' she said, with that irritating soaring of a question mark at the end of her sentence.

I'll bet not one of these little socialist students would agitate to reduce college costs. They just don't want to pay for it. Here is a simple solution for CA colleges, 20% staff cut, and 20% pat cut for those that remain.

As long as the government is subsidizing the cost of a college education the cost will continue to rise. Anytime the government distorts the free market, prices go up.It's not rocket science.

The great irony is that in a Gov’t-funded and run University system as they have in China or France, most or all of these little pukes protesting would never have the chance to go to university.

In those countries (of which I am quite familiar) university spots are extremely competitive, and accept a tiny percent of test-takers and applicants. There are spots for the children of top officials, and a few of the smartest kids in the country. A few more may get the chance to go to a technical-training school, while the rest are simply expected to go out and find jobs (or go on the dole)

In China also, free-university is no longer free either. You will find you are expected to make “donations” to get the classes and college you want.

Anything Joe writes is worth reading. This is on the mark as well.
College professors would mulch their brains and they would be forever liberals, chanting and banging drums for the next thing to be free.

I would add the following....

Protesting big oil to give them free “education” is silly. IF you go get a job working for an oil company then you get a paid education. The school of hard work is the best classroom around.

Not once, to my knowledge, have they ever brought in BIG EDUCATION, which is as big as anything in the BIG category.
"BIG" is right, as in BIG MONEY. Look at the schools' endowment funds.
Billions and billions of dollars tucked away and yet they still charge $30K - $50K, or more, per year.
The protesting scumbags were HAD by the schools, now they want you and me to pay for it.

College professors are the new plantation masters in America.

There is no excuse for college costs to be what they are today.

The facilities are of non-value added luxury and the professor aren’t exactly competing for their wages.

Germany doesn't allow everyone to go to college either. In fact, they start separating students into three separate school programs in the forth grade according to ability.
That's how they start picking the ones who will be allowed to go to college and those that will go to trade schools.
