US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Afghanistan to encourage President Hamid Karzai to continue efforts to reconcile with the Taliban.
Mr Karzai has expressed frustration at the process after the assassinations of several key Afghan leaders.
US officials say Mrs Clinton also wants to convince Afghans that Washington is committed to a long-term relationship with their country.
The US is planning to withdraw troops and hand over security to the Afghans.
"She wants to signal US support for a secure and stable Afghanistan," a US official told journalists travelling with Mrs Clinton.
Her visit to Afghanistan was not announced until she arrived in Kabul late on Wednesday.

"She wants to emphasise that the United States remains committed to Afghan reconciliation and will support President Karzai in his efforts, recognising the difficulties that process has undergone since the assassination of [Burhanuddin] Rabbani," the official added.
Burhanuddin Rabbani was a former Afghan president tasked with trying to reconcile the Taliban with Mr Karzai's US-backed government. He was killed last month by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban envoy.
Mrs Clinton met civic leaders at the US embassy in Kabul before her scheduled meeting with President Karzai.
She assured women's rights activists, education officials and politicians that their concerns were "being heard at the highest levels of the US government".
"I am here to have a reality check," she said.
"I want to hear what people in Afghanistan are thinking about the way forward."

Wasn’t a few months ago that Karsai wanted to negotiate with the Taliban and Washington was against it. It seems as if they have both shifted positions by 180º

In a way he is right. Taliban is & has always been a product of Pakistan not Afghanistan. Even Afghanis who belong to the Taliban ‘movement’ were taught Taliban’s (Taa-leh-baan’s) Islamic ideology in Pakistan, beginning during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and were, largely, funded by the Saudis. Currently (& since US invasion in 2001) there are more Talibans in Pakistan than Afghanistan. To address the Taliban, one needs to deal w/ Pakistan.
But, to say ‘reconcile’ with the Taliban is really admitting defeat and spitting in the face of all those soldiers & civilians killed in the past 10 yrs - not to mention their families.

And screw you bleeding hearts who whine about the innocents. We didn't care when we carpet-bombed Dresden or Tokyo, and definitely didn't care when we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Either their own people change their system to work with the world community, or annihilate every last one.
I don't care any longer. God will take care of the innocents. And if not, so what? We all die. I just prefer they and their children go before ours. Got problem? If so, I'll be happy to paint you a picture of the so-called Palistians and how they teach their children to HATE. I can even recommend a documentary called, "Children of Gaza". It's an eye-opener about Muslim a-holes and what they teach their children. Geeze, they even teach them that Jews drink human blood. How more a** crazy do you want?
