Senate Majority Leader Harry Reids curious claim this week that private sector jobs are doing just fine has given Republicans more ammunition against President Obamas jobs bill and led Democrats to distance themselves from the statement.
Austan Goolsbee, a former policy adviser to Obama, said Thursday he would disagree a little with Reid on that point.
I think at this moment, the government still has an important role to play, he told MSNBC. Its to get the private sector going. And we can do that with tax cuts and incentives. We can do that with a focus on infrastructure, focus on education. Thats the only sustainable growth that were going to get, and thats where I am.
But Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday that Reids comment is the latest evidence that Democrats in Washington have lost all sense of balance when it comes to the size and the scope of the federal government in Washington.
McConnell noted a report that showed Washington, fueled by the high salaries that government workers are receiving, is now the wealthiest area in the nation with an unemployment rate below the national average.
So with all due respect to my friends on the other side, its the private sector thats been begging for mercy, he said. Its the private sector thats being crushed by regulators in Washington. So I dont think the solution to this crisis is to make the federal government even bigger.

Hopefully Dingy Harry keeps digging that hole he's in deeper.
The Imperial District--Washington, D.C., fiddles while America burns
Good, there are too many government employees. They don't create wealth, they consume wealth.
Exactly...And they seem to be consuming that wealth at a much faster pace every single year.
Fixed It!!
Reid is mentally ill.
Bump! :-)
Its the idiots in his state that keep re-electing him, same with Mccain and his butt buddy Gramnisty...
Dingey Harriet is bought and paid for by the unions. Just another Socialist shill. She has nothing to worry about.
I see Reid's reason for optimism. Las Vegas was 15.5 last year and now has a near full-employment rate of 14.2 unemployment rate. The Reno-Sparks area similarly is boiling hot going from 13.9 to a almost full employment rate of 13.0 unemployment rate.
Yes sir ol' Harry is right on.. on something or other.
LOL!
You can bet Dingy Harry wouldn’t have come out with this ridiculous statement if he hadn’t just been reelected, sure hope the people of NV remember this.
He “Won” in only three of seventeen counties, the most populous and most liberal.
He hides from most counties, for his safety.
He is not supported by most Nevadan’s, he is supported by union thugs and the eco-nuts.
He has already stated that this is his last term before retiring.
My hope is that he does not get to finish this term, he has health issues of his own, his wife also has problems, he needs to retire and “spend more time with my (his) family”.
The real issue now is ensuring his anointed heir does not win election to his seat.
His kid fouled up and got caught skirting election laws, hopefully that derails him.
Who else Pinkly might try to put in place I do not know, but there is no doubt they would be foul for our national interest.
Thanks, I hadn’t heard he said this was his last term.
Like you, I would like to see an early retirement from him. If we take the WH and the Senate back that just may be the incentive for him to go.
