Police called him a "Good Samaritan," but Minneapolis detectives were still investigating Friday the case of a man who shot and killed an armed robber he chased down the night before.
The man who fired the fatal shot had a permit for his handgun and told police he used the weapon after the fleeing robber turned and confronted him behind a restaurant.
Police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer said the department was leaning toward classifying the shooting as self-defense.
"However, decisions on charging are left up to the county attorney's office. And since there's a death, it might even be taken to a grand jury," he said.
Palmer would not release the name of the gunman, who was not arrested, or the 53-year-old woman who was robbed.

OK as a defense attorney for the shooter, here is my case.....the man pursued the suspect to maintain visual contact to aid in apprehension, the suspect turned and confronted the shooter with a gun, at which time retreating and turning his back on the armed suspect could be fatal. Therefore drawing his own weapon and shooting the suspect in self defense was his best and last option. They complain if the public gets involved, and they complain if we don't....you can't have it both ways!

This guy will get “No billed” by the Grand Jury. He did fine, solved a hundred unsolved crimes, and prevented hundreds more.

...the fleeing robber turned and confronted him behind a restaurant. As a permit holder, I would have unloaded on him to for the sake of self defense.
Of course a prosecutor would probably plea the case as "You should have 0bama'd him" and negotiated a truce before calling the cops instead of shooting him dead before he shoots you.

The headline writer may be up for libel. There is nothing in the story to indicate that the shooter “shot to kill”. The shooter killed the robber, but there is a strong legal distinction between “shooting to kill” and shooting to stop, where the perpetrator is killed as a result.
I teach all my students to shoot to stop the attack, *not* to shoot to kill.
This sounds like gross defamation of character to me.

No billed ??????
In Minneapolis???????
Not likely. There would be rioting in the streets if a grand jury delivered a ‘No Bill”. Have you forgotten the Rodney king affair in LA? African-Americans are a protected class and when they are in the majority or close to a majority in a liberal city, there is no such thing as “self defense” when one of them is killed by a white man.

Good luck to him. Even if he gets off, he will be harrassed by the system for quite some time. I’m glad to hear that the police are speaking up for him, at least.
Minneapolis is not a good place for self defense. But maybe things are changing, even there. A jury might be swayed if the woman robbery victim testifies, and if the police testify in his favor. Or, if they are leaned on by the politicians, if his lawyer brings up what the police have already said and forces them to confirm it.
