Flashback: Herman Cain wants to see $6 trillion in cuts
Quad-City Times ^ | 10/21/11 | Ed Tibbets

Posted on 10/22/2011 2:23:56 PM PDT by justsaynomore

Negotiations on the federal debt ceiling aren't aiming high enough, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said in the Quad-Cities on Monday, arguing he would like to see spending cuts go as high as $6 trillion over 10 years, two to three times the level now being contemplated.

Cain, the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza, blamed President Barack Obama and Congress for allowing the debt ceiling talks to come down to the wire, saying it's a failure of leadership. In an interview, he rejected the idea negotiators should satisfy themselves with $2 trillion in cuts over 10 years.

"It's not enough," he said. "I'd like to see, over 10 years, somewhere in the range of $5-to-$6 trillion. And I happen to believe that it is perfectly doable if you do one of the things I have been advocating out here on this campaign journey. Restructure these programs. As long as we're talking about just cutting them and not restructuring them, then they're never going to get their hands around the whole issue of spending."

Over the weekend, a White House proposal to put together a $4 trillion in deficit reductions over 10 years as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling was rejected.

Republicans have said they won't go along with revenue increases, which Democrats are demanding. As a result, talks are centered on reducing spending by $2 trillion to $3 trillion. The debt ceiling is now at $14.3 trillion.

Cain was in Davenport as a guest speaker at the Scott County Republican Women's luncheon at Thunder Bay Grille.

He drew a sizeable crowd, and a handful of people said later they were impressed by his common touch.

"He makes sense," said Bill Edmond, a Davenport alderman and Republican activist. "We need more people who practice common sense" in Washington, D.C.

Cain said he would take federal Medicaid and education funds and send them to the states to give states more flexibility.

He also said he would cut corporate and payroll taxes and eliminate taxes on corporate profits now being held overseas in an effort to promote the economy.

Cain's stop in the Quad-Cities was one of two for the day. He also was going to Urbandale to open his state campaign headquarters.

He also took questions from the group Monday.

In answer to one man's complaint about how some people - "idiots," he called them - aren't educated about basic civics and how the government works, Cain drew laughs when he said the first step was to "save the saveable."

"I believe that what this gentleman is referring to represents what I call the clueless 50 percent," Cain said. "Unfortunately, a lot of them vote. That's the problem."

Cain said that could be combatted by conservatives turning out to vote next year - as some did not for John McCain in 2008 - and that the "pendulum has already started to shift" to draw independents and moderates away from Obama toward a better alternative.

"Things are beginning to shake out," he said. "I happen to believe we have the ability to get the right votes in the right places."

So would I.

It takes more than a magic wand and one person to make it happen.

Want in one hand and sh!t in the other and see which one fills up first.

***No disrespect intended***

Mathematically challenged media - that is at least FIVE times the $1.2 Trillion "deficit reduction" the commission has been charged with finding. In other words, the current politicians will come up with a combination of tax increases and spending reductions equal to $1.2 trillion. Cain apparently wants $6 tillion in spending cuts alone.

I say it’s good that he is telling people what he intends.

When Cain talks about his tax/jobs plan, some people complain that he is not talking about cutting spending enough.

When he talks about cuttings pending, some people will complain it is pie in the sky.

I for one, believe he will do it. He made the hard cuts, layoffs, franchise closures, in order to save Godfather’s.

If Cain wants to balance the budget under 9-9-9 then he'll need $6 trillion over three years. Of course, that was under the original 9-9-9. The way he's been exempting people and companies from taxes lately we could well be talking about $8 trillion in cuts by now.

Surprising this line has not been splashed across the media:

In answer to one man’s complaint about how some people - “idiots,” he called them - aren’t educated about basic civics and how the government works, Cain drew laughs when he said the first step was to “save the saveable.”

“I believe that what this gentleman is referring to represents what I call the clueless 50 percent,” Cain said. “Unfortunately, a lot of them vote. That’s the problem.”

And an electrified fence that kills and a moat. Are you sure he wasn't’ joking? Maybe he didn't’ understand the question? Wait, why not 9 trillion?

He needs a good team in administration augmented by a workable house and senate before headway can be achieved....let alone a judicial that isn't prone to follow political agenda.

Herman Cain knows well of what he speaks! Ignore him at our own peril. And please pray for his safety and for his well being. Thank you.

Actually, this statement was made before the 9-9-9 plan.

By the way, people under the poverty level do not pay income taxes now. Under Cain’s plan they will have to pay 9% sales tax.

I agree.

I personally believe we will have Republican Senate and House, and I bet we end up with even larger number of conservatives this time around. If anyone can lead them to make these cuts, I believe he can.

It may be pie in the sky, but nothing gets done without an idea, risk, and faith.

Actually, this statement was made before the 9-9-9 plan.

And he didn't give any details on where he would cut apparently. And now we have his 9-9-9 plan which changes almost hourly. Who knows how much revenue it will actually generate, and how much in cuts will be needed to actually balance the budget when he's done tinkering with it?

Reminds me of the joke Perry once told about wanting to give illegal aliens amnesty under a so-called "guest worker" program. Oops, no wait, the joke's on us because he was serious about that.

That’s not true.

“Empowerment Zones” were always part of the plan. If you had ever bothered to actually go to the site and read the plan you would know that. The links to the actual plan were posted here many times.

Besides voting for Herman Cain, we must see that term limits are imposed on Congress. thee terms for the House and two terms for the Senate. Career Politicians become plastered with corruption. Keep it short. Keep it simple. With NO pensions! That will cut a mighty slice out of the budget by itself! Those deposed can speak their little speeches, write their little books, and even serve at the local level if the people so decide.

Congress will serve the country better with people from the real world. So we must vote all the old timers out! Not being a politician is a great big plus today and every day!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but so far all of the supposed “changes” to the 9-9-9 plan I’ve heard about so far were in the plan all along and the people screaming about “changes” never actually read the plan.

If you could point out an actual case of the plan changing from the original proposal, as opposed to elements being fleshed out in public like the ‘opportunity zones,’ then I would appreciate it.

$6T is an enormous step in the right direction, but it’s still far below the $9-13T projected 10-year increase in the national debt. We need more!
