Perry and Bachmann Take Veiled Swipes At Cain In Iowa
The Lebanon Daily Star ^ | October 24, 2011 01:04 AM | By John Whitesides

Posted on 10/23/2011 4:39:23 PM PDT by drewh

DES MOINES, Iowa: Republicans Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann took veiled swipes at surging presidential rival Herman Cain Saturday as six of the party’s White House hopefuls courted social conservatives at an Iowa forum.

Appearing separately before about 1,000 conservative activists, the Republican candidates all pledged to protect the unborn, defend traditional marriage, limit government and bring an end to the presidency of Democrat Barack Obama.

But Cain, the former pizza executive, came under indirect fire for seeming to suggest earlier this week that while he opposed abortion, government should not be trying to tell a woman what to do about it.

“It is a liberal canard to say I am personally pro-life, but government should stay out of that decision,” Texas Governor Rick Perry told the Iowa forum, held in an exhibition hall at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

“If that is your view, you are not pro-life,” he said, without mentioning Cain by name. “You are pro having your cake and eating it too.”

Bachmann also criticized Cain’s abortion comments without naming him, saying she believed government must intervene to protect the unborn and she would support a constitutional amendment on the issue.

Bachmann, a U.S. representative from Minnesota, also said she would never consider negotiating the release of detainees at Guantanamo Bay – a direct rebuttal of Cain’s recent comment that he would consider trading them for a U.S. hostage.

Cain, who has struggled in the past week as his views come under more scrutiny, has tried to backtrack on both of those comments. At the forum he was direct when asked about his stance on abortion. “No abortions, no exceptions,” he said.

The forum was heavy on social issues, and all of the candidates were asked by the forum sponsors what they would do to end abortion on demand. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum questioned the commitment of the other candidates to fight on the issue.

The conservative activists at the forum, sponsored by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, gave all of the candidates similar polite but not wildly enthusiastic responses.

Former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich drew some of the biggest cheers of the evening for a speech that forecast economic recovery after Obama’s defeat in November 2012.

“Late that night, the recovery will begin,” Gingrich said, predicting a groundswell of optimism and hiring after Obama’s defeat. “We can have a dramatically better Christmas in 2012 if it is the goodbye Obama Christmas.”

The social and religious conservatives who play a big role in the Iowa nominating contest Jan. 3 have spent much of the Republican campaign seeking a candidate to rally around.

Bachmann surged during the summer but faded shortly after her August straw poll win. Perry took the lead after entering the race in August but sunk after halting debate performances.

Cain is the latest candidate to surge in the race, with recent polls giving him leads in Iowa and in some cases, nationally. His supporters in the crowd said they thought he could have some staying power.

“Look how far he’s come with no budget. He’s charismatic, and when he says something you can believe it,” said Keith Lacy, who owns two Godfather’s Pizza restaurants in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cain had been chief executive of the pizza chain.

Bachmann told the conservative crowd she was one of them and said they needed to rally around a candidate to kick Obama out of the White House.

“This is the year when social conservatives can have it all,” she said. “This is our year when we don’t compromise, this is our year when we don’t settle.”

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the nominal front-runner in the Republican field who Thursday made just his third visit to Iowa this year, skipped the forum. He has had trouble winning over conservatives because of his past support for abortion rights and an individual health care mandate.

After plunging millions into the Iowa contest in 2008, Romney lost to former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who won strong support from the state’s religious conservatives. Polls showed big majorities of caucus-goers in 2008 made up their mind in the last month before the contest.

It’s also a liberal canard to say that you support parental rights on the one hand, and then try to enact a requirement that parents of girls to be vaccinated with a specific new, highly expensive vaccine that just happens to be produced by one of your campaign contributors.

It is SO painful to listen to Bachmann lately. She sounds so desperate and tired. I wish she would just get out already.

It is getting painful, and I like her, too! She's just not ready and needs to set her sights on the senate or something.

It's become a game in our house to take anything she says and somehow associate it to having 28 kids.

When she started talking about "Anchor Babies" in the last debate, I paused it and said, imitating her voice "Anderson, I raised 28 anchor babies..." My wife almost spit her drink across the room.

I'm sure you criticized Cain for taking race card shots at Perry over the press's infamous rock story too, right?

Of course you did.

Herman Cain is personally and politically, 100% Pro-life

He is committed to:
1) Supporting and signing Pro-Life legislation
2) Appointing Pro-Life Supreme Court Justices
3) Defunding Planned Parenthood
4) He is for a Constitutional Amendment banning abortion (as well as gay marriage)
5) He has a HISTORY of active, not just verbal, support of pro-life issues

Life, liberty & pursuit of happiness starts with unborn life
The Founding Fathers got it right. The Founding Fathers got it right because of those fundamental principles: life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They also got it in the right order. That wasn’t an accident. Their vision meant that you could pursue happiness in America as long as you don’t infringe upon the liberties of somebody else. And
you can pursue all the liberties that you want as long as you don’t infringe upon the life of anybody else. And that
starts with the life of the unborn.

Defund Planned Parenthood; intent was to kill black babies
I absolutely would defund Planned Parenthood—not because I don’t believe in planning parenthood, [but because]
Planned Parenthood as an organization is an absolute farce on the American people.

People who know the history of Margaret Sanger, who started Planned Parenthood, they know that the intention was not to help young women who get pregnant to plan their parenthood. No—it was a sham to be able to kill black babies.

I believe that life begins at conception, period. And that means that I will have to see enough evidence that someone
would appoint shares that same view. I believe that the current Supreme Court is leaning too much to the liberal side. ...there is no way I would compromise my religious beliefs about the sanctity of life. And so it starts with, will they have demonstrated, in some of their other rulings, if they come from the federal judge bench, whether or not they also share that.

Because I believe that the principles that our Founding Fathers cherished, when they founded this country, and wrote the Declaration of Independence which inspired the Constitution, they were based upon biblical principles. I want to get back to those principles as president, if I run and get elected—not rewrite those documents.

Okay, the article is dated 9/13/06, which is good. The money was spent on a radio campaign in 2006, with the $1 million dollars mentioned.

From this article:

“Cain will underscore that message with a $1 million advertising campaign in key states and congressional districts targeting black radio programs and urban radio stations young African Americans enjoy. Some of the ads focus on abortion.”

One could imply that perhaps Cain is funding it from this statement, however...

The ads are funded by Americas PAC, a Cain-backed organization, which former Al Gore campaign manager Donna Brazile said did a great job in turning out black pro-life votes.

So, obviously, Cain contributed money to this PAC to be used for the ads...however...

From another source snip:

“According to a report filed with the Internal Revenue Service, a company reportedly tied to Mr. Rooney, Woodland Group LLC, gave $900,000 to America’s PAC earlier this year. Other donors chipped in about $32,000.”

America’s PAC is a 527. It spent around $650,000 on media in 2006. Herman Cain was the spokesman. From the article:

Mr. Cain, who once managed the Godfather’s Pizza chain and ran unsuccessfully for the Senate from Georgia in 2004, said he was not troubled that Mr. Rooney, who is white, is funding ads using black voices who claim to speak on behalf of the black community.”You don’t have a lot of black billionaires who would want to fund something like this,” he said.

Bottom line: There is no evidence that Cain personally spent $1,000,000 of his own money for the pro-life based on the article you sourced.

Source below:

A little-known Republican group that claims to have swayed the 2004 presidential election with provocative radio advertising aimed at black and Hispanic audiences is spending nearly $1 million this year to boost the GOP’s chances of holding on to a majority in Congress.

The group, America’s Pac, began running ads last month in more than two dozen congressional districts. The campaign discusses issues ranging from warrantless wiretapping to school choice, but the most inflammatory spots pertain to abortion.

“Black babies are terminated at triple the rate of white babies,” a female announcer in one of the ads says, as rain, thunder, and a crying infant are heard in the background. “The Democratic Party supports these abortion laws that are decimating our people, but the individual’s right to life is protected in the Republican platform. Democrats say they want our vote. Why don’t they want our lives?”

Another ad features a dialogue between two men.

“If you make a little mistake with one of your ‘hos,’ you’ll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked,” one of the men says.

“That’s too cold. I don’t snuff my own seed,” the other replies.

“Maybe you do have a reason to vote Republican,” the first man says.

Another spot attempts to link Democrats to a white supremacist who served as a Republican in the Louisiana Legislature, David Duke. The ad makes reference to Duke’s trip to Syria last year, where he spoke at an anti-war rally.

“I can understand why a Ku Klux Klan cracker like David Duke makes nice with the terrorists,”a male voice in the ad says. “What I want to know is why so many of the Democrat politicians I helped elect are on the same side of the Iraq war as David Duke.”

In one of the communities where the ads are running, South Bend, Ind.,some blacks were outraged.

“They’re awful. They’re repulsive,” a Democratic activist and community leader in South Bend, Gladys Muhammad, said. “When they say Democrats don’t like black babies, that’s damn fools. They’re very insensitive.”

“This is so dirty, but it works,” a sociology professor at Indiana University, Johnnie Griffin, said. “These are race ads. It’s incredible.”

While Ms. Griffin said she felt insulted by the ads, she also said a student in her class reported that a relative was thinking of switching to the Republican Party because of them. “Black people are more conservative than anybody thinks. We do have strong family values that people don’t seem to stress as much,” the professor said.

Ms. Griffin said a community meeting is planned for Friday to discuss the ad campaign. The key financial backer of America’s Pac is J. Patrick Rooney, 78, of Indianapolis. Mr. Rooney, a strong proponent of school choice scholarship programs, retired in 1996 as chairman of Golden Rule Insurance. The company was sold to larger insurer, United-Health Group, in 2003 for a reported $893 million.

According to a report filed with the Internal Revenue Service, a company reportedly tied to Mr. Rooney, Woodland Group LLC, gave $900,000 to America’s PAC earlier this year. Other donors chipped in about $32,000.

Mr. Rooney declined to be interviewed yesterday. The group referred calls from The New York Sun to a conservative, African-American talk show host who voiced some of the ads, Herman Cain.

“The main thing that America’s Pac is up to is it basically is challenging the thesis or the belief on the part of the Republican Party that they cannot attract the black vote,” Mr. Cain said. He said similar advertisements run in 2004 helped boost President Bush’s share of the black vote in Ohio to 16%, from 9% in 2000.

“We don’t believe that was an accident,” Mr. Cain said. The IRS filing indicates that the ads are running this year in 10 battleground states, including Ohio, New Mexico, and Nevada.

America’s Pac is the brainchild of a Kansas-based Republican consultant, Richard Nadler. He said Sunday that he is no longer affiliated with the group.

” Do you have a source to that’s where and how Cain spent or contributed his $1,000,000 ? “

The LifeNews article is poorly constructed.
It implies that America’s PAC paid for the ads , but, describing it
as a “ Cain backed “ group could give the impression
that Cain was the major donor.

The 527 PAC filing is here http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/527/americas_pac.asp
The Republican Leadership Coalition contributed almost a million
to the PAC in 2004.

Cain’s name does not appear in the contributions ledger.
The expense side lists this :
A new Voice
825 Fairways Court
#303
Stockbridge, GA 30281 $1,000 Spokesperson services 11/04/2004

A New Voice is the company owned by Gloria and Herman Cain.

This is how he said it, not all split up.

And he is EXACTLY correct. That is the Dick Durban pro life view. Cain & Durban see eye to eye on this issue.

Even if the Pope was elected president, he can not single handedly stop every abortion. In our system, it will require a ruling by SCOTUS, and the 9 justices do not change often. What I want to see in the candidate I support is that he/she appoints pro-life judges and non-activist judges. That is one path to stopping abortions. The other is changing constitution.

I have seen nothing in Cain, Bachmann, Santorum which would lead me to believe they would appoint pro-abortion judges. So, who ever Perry was taking pot shots at, it has zero practical effect.

What is the source for Cain spending a million of his own money? What did you do with it? Where did he give it?

RedState.com had jumped full force onto the Cain abortion mis-statements, running miltiple front page posts accusing Cain of being pro-choice. Then they took the time to actually look at Cain's past history. The result was the thread above.
