Thursday, October 20, 2011 Reflecting national trends, businessman Herman Cain has now jumped to the front of the Republican pack in Iowa. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Iowa caucus-goers shows that Cain is in front with 28% followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 21%. Congressman Ron Paul is a distant third at 10% followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 9%, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann at 8%, and Texas Governor Rick Perry at 7%. The sixth place finish for Perry is a sharp decline from early September when Perry was the frontrunner both nationally and...

DES MOINES, Iowa: Republicans Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann took veiled swipes at surging presidential rival Herman Cain Saturday as six of the party’s White House hopefuls courted social conservatives at an Iowa forum. Appearing separately before about 1,000 conservative activists, the Republican candidates all pledged to protect the unborn, defend traditional marriage, limit government and bring an end to the presidency of Democrat Barack Obama. But Cain, the former pizza executive, came under indirect fire for seeming to suggest earlier this week that while he opposed abortion, government should not be trying to tell a woman what to do...

Full title: Strong Words From Newt At Iowa Faith and Freedom: 'After 8 Years, We Will Leave Iraq in Defeat, Don't Kid Yourselves, It Is Defeat' Newt Gingrich at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition Dinner tonight gives some straight talk on Obama's decision (yesterday) to withdraw all American troopsVideo Gingrich: "We lost the 3rd Iraq war. This may or may not be popular to say but as a historian I think it needs to be said. We won the first Iraq war in 1991 driving Iraq out of Kuwait in 4 days. We won the second Iraq war to...

Evangelical activists are sharply divided just 10 weeks before Iowa's leadoff presidential caucuses, and a half-dozen Republican contenders hoped to gain an edge with the state's most potent conservative voting bloc. The candidates, including businessman Herman Cain, sought Saturday to sharpen their Christian conservative credentials, and at times allay doubts, among this influential group before the state's Jan. 3 caucuses, which officially open the Republican nominating process. Iowa voters have yet to rally around any single candidate and aggressively court them, seeking the kind of lift that carried former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to victory in the leadoff caucuses in...
  • Newt on a Run: Gingrich Campaign on a Roll After Bumpy Start

After stumbling out of the gate in his run for the GOP presidential nomination, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich's campaign coffers are rising in direct proportion to his poll numbers. “The campaign is becoming really fun,” said Gingrich, who announced his candidacy for the White House on May 11, only to have a half-dozen key and senior campaign staffers resign within six weeks. Not content with the publicity from their walkout, former staffers hurt their former boss with gossip about his spending, and the role of his wife in the campaign.
  • Newt Hits a Grand Slam at Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition; Perry Surprises me

The Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition Fall Banquet today: Herman Cain, as usual, was inspiring. Michele Bachmann, did well; same stump speech talking points but she did o.k.; she seemed tired. Rick Perry did ten-times better than he did in the Debates; receiving tepid applause upon entry and rousing applause as he left the stage. But, per my observation, only one, got a "standing" ovation when he left the stage and that was Newt Gingrich. I have always thought Newt was a political genius but felt like he just wasn't the guy to carry the banner for the GOP in...
