Vatican Calls For Global Authority On Economy, Raps “Idolatry Of The Market”
Reuters ^ | 24 Oct 2011 | Philip Pullella

The Vatican called on Monday for the establishment of a “global public authority” and a “central world bank” to rule over financial institutions that have become outdated and often ineffective in dealing fairly with crises. The document from the Vatican’s Justice and Peace department should please the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrators and similar movements around the world who have protested against the economic downturn.

“Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority,” was at times very specific, calling, for example, for taxation measures on financial transactions. “The economic and financial crisis which the world is going through calls everyone, individuals and peoples, to examine in depth the principles and the cultural and moral values at the basis of social coexistence,” it said.

The Vatican bank is a stinking cesspool of corruption and they’re going to tell us how to run the world’s finances?

"This is an extremely bad idea."

I fully concur! In this, the Vatican is entering territory it should stay out of.

It has come to my notice that within the modern church, not just the Catholic, there is a push by some to have the state take over what has been the purview of the church--i.e. taking care of the poor (always with us--hello statism--forget utopia), the widows and orphans.

Whoa! Are they serious?? Have they read the book of Revelations?

When did John Lennon become pope? You know, Imagine...

In my opinion this is really scary stuff coming from the Pope.

It appears that - no matter what the religion - an “education” in that religion completely negates any ability in economics.

Jobs are created by capitalists.

If you want massive failure, check out “Soviet Union” in your Funk and Whatevers.

Has been tried on a smaller scale - Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Took some 90 years to conclude that government by clueless doesn’t work.
That’s all we need - screwup on the world scale. Zero is working on it.

Shouldn’t a prayer to Saint Matthew (Patron Saint of banking) be all that is required?

I see. So those of us who invest in stocks and bonds and such should cancel our positions, and cease making payments to Catholic Charities and the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal?

Gee, I wonder how the Vatican pays its light bills?

Rex is a Catholic, btw.
