A deadly shooting rampage at a Carson City IHOP restaurant last month has prompted a call for a review of Nevada's gun laws.
Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman William Horne said it would be appropriate for lawmakers to consider changes to the state's gun regulations after a man with a history of mental illness shot 11 people with an assault weapon at the restaurant, killing three Nevada National Guard members and a civilian before killing himself.
Horne, D-Las Vegas, told the Reno Gazette-Journal that while he's a gun owner who supports gun rights, he questions why citizens need to own an assault weapon.
"I think it's a good question to ask: Why does a typical citizen need to have an assault weapon?" he said. "I think we're at the point where we have to have that discussion. Can we protect citizens without impacting other people's rights?"
National Guard Sgt. Caitlin Kelley, who was seriously injured by Eduardo Sencion in the Sept. 6 rampage, said the mass shooting has made her furious about gun laws.
"I can't imagine why we are even selling assault rifles to civilians," said Kelley, who now must use a wheelchair after being shot in the foot. "There's no reason for an AK-47 or an M-16 or an M-4 to be in a civilian's home."
Sencion's AK-47-style firearm was illegally modified to fire as an automatic weapon.

How would making an illegal weapon, "more illegal" stop manicacs from using them against innocents? Answer: IT WOULDNT!
Anyways, here is your nanny-state mental midget enemy of the state:
Enemy of the people William Horne, DEMOCRAT=Las Vegas
Doesn't this make the reaction kind like someone proposing to ban gasoline because someone used it to make an illegal Molotov Cocktail?
I think it is already illegal for MENTALLY ILL people to acquire weapons. How will it help to make it illegal for OTHER PEOPLE to get them?
In fact, more illegal weapons in the hands of people around him might have prevented this tragedy.
If everyone who owned a gun, were allowed to openly carry their weapon (without threat of intimidation and harassment); such events as what happened at the IHOP would not only be far fewer, the number of casualties would be exponentially lower.
If everyone has a gun, and you start to make trouble; the odds are high that you will become a ‘Lead Magnet’.
Nevada should definitely pass a law against people with a history of mental illness from having an assault weapon....
Billie Boy, Billie Boy, Charming Billie - you should read “The Racist Origins of Gun Control”.
Then you would not be making such commie inspired and historically contradicted statements.
I’m with you on this.
If he had been surrounded with armed citizens he might not have thought to shoot 11 people (or at least not been able to)
I think it is time we tell the libtards “OK we will agree to banning ALL weapons as soon as you get them away from the criminals first (let us know when you’re done)”
I’m now of the opinion that owning and carrying (concealed or not) a firearm should be had by every one even those who are criminals and the insane. Make the laws in favor of the victims and make it open season any one using their firearms in a criminal manner. That would clean out the worst of them and make every other potential criminal or nutjob seriously think twice about ever doing that.
Carry on trains, cars, airplanes. How long do you think the Muzzy terrorists would last with an airplane full of armed Americans?
Had everyone who was willing openly carried in Carson City that AM, it's hard to imagine the perp getting into IHOP, let alone, go from sling arms/low ready to a shoulder or hip firing position.
Any idiot carrying a longarm in low-ready is out in public, I'll find cover and put my front sites on him until I find out his intentions.
The very words that gun grabbers use every time! - DEFENSE!
I still have not seen a follow up on the shooter. Who is he and what was his malfunction? Where did the hardware come from?

A Sgt in the Army does not understand the difference between an M16 and an AR15? Sign, just what is our Army coming to?
These incidents will always happen regardless of how many people own firearms. But if we continue to liberalize the gun laws and Obama and the Left tries to press their desire for total gun confiscation into reality resulting in more and more people buying record amounts of guns annually, we will see these kinds of crimes kept to a minimum.

Anyone who converts a semi auto to full auto is not following the law to begin with.
And the average full auto weapon is not typically one of the more popular sellers down at the corner gun shop.
Yeah, because gun control like California’s would have prevented that massacre in Orange County, right?
And I’m sure all those gang bangers that have turned parts of Los Angeles into an open air shooting gallery have concealed weapon permits.
Of course, when surrounded by armed people they're faced with the old circular firing squad dilemma.
Though I'd rather be shot by friendly fire than by the perp. If I had to choose.
A typical citizen doesn't need a reason and doesn't answer to you or any other politician. It's called The Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Needs.
"Can we protect citizens without impacting other people's rights?"
No. Simply....no.
Federal law requires you to be "adjudicated mentally ill" to prohibit your purchase of a firearm. I don't know what CA law allows.
Are you ready to increase federal restrictions to include "diagnosed mentally ill" folks?
